Chapter 585 Byron Performs an Exorcism Ritual

Just after ten at night, Bob and Byron arrived at the hospital room together, along with Byron's two assistants, plus Dane, Cordelia, and Jasper.

According to Byron, the Infant Spirit had already attached itself to Jasper's body, so it would be best to perform the exorcism ritual on both mother and child together. That way, they could eliminate it more thoroughly.

Jasper had been running a fever the whole time. Although he wasn't completely out of it, he wasn't as lively as usual either. When he saw me, he didn't greet me as actively as he normally would. I felt like something was missing from him.

Byron himself was almost fifty, and the two people he brought were both in their early thirties. They weren't his students or friends—more like they were just brought along to make up the numbers.

According to Byron's arrangement, family members couldn't be present during the exorcism ritual. The main concern was that after the Infant Spirit was removed from Chloe and Jasper, it might attach itself to someone else.

Since initially it was just an exorcism for Chloe alone, Byron had quoted twelve thousand dollars, and Paul had said that if he really had the skills, that price wasn't high at all.

Later, when they decided on short notice to bring Jasper over from the infectious disease hospital to do it together, Byron proposed adding another eight thousand to round it up to twenty thousand. Bob agreed immediately without a second thought.

To prove how powerful the Infant Spirit was, the first thing Byron said when entering the room was to ask Bob, Dane, and Cordelia: "When you took the elevator up, didn't you feel a gloomy chill in there, like cold air rushing down the back of your collar?"

Bob didn't answer right away, but Dane and Cordelia nodded eagerly, saying in unison: "Yes, yes, exactly."

"And when you got out of the elevator, how did you feel?"

Dane thought for a moment and said: "Chest tightness."

Cordelia also added: "Short of breath, like something suddenly pressed down on my heart."

Byron nodded: "Now you should know how powerful the Infant Spirit is, right? You can't see it, but I can see its shadow drifting throughout the entire building."

When the four elderly people heard this, their faces went pale with fear. They say the older people get, the more they fear death—seems to be completely true.

Bob stayed quiet the whole time. Although he tried to control his emotions, I noticed his expression getting worse and worse. Obviously, he had experienced the same sensations his parents just described, but given his position, he didn't feel comfortable saying so openly.

I immediately opened my Third Eye and looked around. I didn't see any shadow of an Infant Spirit in the air, and when I looked at Chloe, aside from that dark energy from before, there were no new changes.

I was almost certain that Byron was exaggerating to scare them.

People are like this—in certain specific situations, when it comes to things that terrify them, they're easily influenced by psychological suggestion.

Tonight was supposed to be about the exorcism ritual. Bob and his parents came with anxious hearts, already on edge. Now, influenced by Byron's psychological suggestions, they would believe whatever Byron said had really happened.

Chloe's IV bag had finished around seven in the evening, and she was now resting in bed.

The nurses did their shift change and rounds at midnight every night. To avoid the hospital discovering we were engaging in superstitious activities, everyone just stayed quiet in the room at first, or casually chatted about random social topics.

When the nurse came for rounds during shift change, she was surprised to see so many people in the room, especially the four elderly people—she couldn't make sense of it at all.

After the nurse left, Byron started preparing.

First, he moved the bedside table in front of the bed, took out a ceramic bowl from his luggage bag, filled it about a third full with rice, then stuck three incense sticks in the rice.

He also took out a basin from his bag, probably for burning paper offerings.

The preliminary work was simple. After getting ready, Byron told us all to leave.

Chloe suddenly pointed at me and asked Byron: "My family can leave, that's fine, but he can stay, right?"

Byron shook his head: "The exorcism ritual is a very solemn matter. If unrelated people are present, not only might they attract possession, but they could also distract us. If that happens, the problem becomes serious."

Sabrina understood clearly that Chloe wanted me to stay by her side—that would make her feel more secure.

Probably feeling a bit guilty, Sabrina worried that Bob might notice something, so she quickly said: "It's okay, dear. We'll all be right outside the door. Buddha will protect you and keep you safe! Come on, let's go. Don't delay the master's exorcism ritual."

With that, she ushered everyone out.

When they weren't paying attention, I gave Chloe an encouraging look. She seemed to trust me especially, and nodded with confidence.

Before this, I had already bought a baby bottle from the convenience store outside, opened a can of formula that visitors had brought, mixed a bottle of milk, and placed it on the windowsill.

Everyone's attention was focused on Byron, so no one noticed the bottle.

We left the hospital room, and Byron closed the door. He even used a pillowcase to cover the glass window on the door.

I immediately activated my Internal Alchemy, opened my Third Eye, and listened carefully. I could not only see what was happening inside but also hear the sounds.

I saw Byron signal his assistant to take out three cushions from the luggage bag. Byron held a talisman in his hand, along with several sheets of yellow paper.

Byron lit the three incense sticks in the rice bowl, then knelt on the cushion, burned three sheets of yellow paper, kowtowed three times, drew a cross on the floor with his right middle finger, pressed his calves on the cross, crossed his right leg over his left, and sat on the floor.

Then he burned the talisman, closed his eyes slightly, breathed in through his nose and out through his mouth nine times, then placed both hands on his lower abdomen and began chanting silently.

His two assistants also knelt on either side of him, seeming like his guardians.

I furrowed my brow again, blocked out all distractions, and listened carefully. I discovered he was chanting a spirit-summoning spell.

I'd heard from Paul that people who can truly drive away spirits and catch ghosts must first be able to communicate with spirits. If you can't freely move between the Yin and Yang worlds, how can you claim to drive away spirits and catch ghosts?

I heard Byron chanting: "I call upon Jehovah, Odin, Gaia..."

These were all legendary gods. Could he really summon them? That would be quite impressive, wouldn't it?
