Chapter 42: Rage

Chapter 42: Rage
Calina

Slowly the pieces had begun to fit together after my father had told me about everything they’d discovered about Brutis and Caleb working together. The only problem was that we couldn’t bring it to the LHS or the werewolf community. We had no hard proof of anything. The only thing that could happen now was disciplinary action for my father and an exile for Mason.

I felt empty. I’d been looking forward to this, to being free. But now I didn’t know what I was returning to. Everything had built up to my initiation. And now I wasn’t even a werewolf. I was some freak of nature. At least Mason would fully transform. I’d stay this way and have nothing to do and no purpose. It was a heavy weight resting on my shoulders and now that I was facing it, I had no idea how to cope with it anymore.

“You alright there? Worried about Mason?” my stepfather asked, placing a reassuring hand on mine. I pulled my lips into a smile and shook my head. “No, I think he’ll be okay.”

“Then?”

I shrugged and then shook my head. He left it, but I could see Louis staring at me in the rearview mirror. He had a sympathetic look in his eyes, almost as though he’d been reading my mind. But I shook my head and proceeded to stare out the window.

When we arrived back at the packgrounds I let out a long stretch. It took a few seconds before I was completely bombarded by Vander’s brothers and Taria. She was the first to embrace me. When she did… I cried. I cried like I’d never cried before. I was heaving and gasping for air to the point where it felt painful to continue going on like this. And soon I was surrounded by everyone I cared about. But I still felt empty. I wanted my mother and father here. It was in these moments that I really missed them both.

By the time I was done crying I was so exhausted that all I could do was let everyone walk me home. Erin would stay with Freya for the time being, until we sorted everything else out. Louis and my step father walked me into the house. Vander had left it unlocked for me.

We said our goodbyes and then they left, leaving me there in silence. I was more angry than I was sad. I was angry at how my life had gone. I was angry at the fact that I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere. But most of all, I was angry at Vander. No… I was furious at him. All of this was his fault. I trusted that he’d stick to his word and all it did was get me into worse situations than I could have imagined.

Vander

I drove faster than I’d ever driven before and arrived at the packgrounds in record time. I was incredibly lucky, because as I offloaded Mason from the car and carried him into the healing centre, I could hear his bones begin to break. I called Mary immediately and she promptly led me down to an underground room. This was where we kept those who’d been turned and needed immediate assistance. It was a well barricaded room empty of anything and cushioned well too. Though the cushioning looked worse for wear from years of detaining first time changers.

I placed Mason in the centre of the room and followed Mary out.

“Should I ask?” Mary said with a long sigh.

I chuckled saying, “It’s so complicated.”

And it was. My mate’s ex-boyfriend was in my healing centre, about to become a werewolf. I felt responsible for this. I really did. The only way I saw to make up for it was to let him join my pack. That way, maybe I’d be able to soothe my growing guilt.

Mary left shortly and I stayed outside the room, watching as Mason slowly began to writhe in pain. I wanted to go home and see Calina, but I was scared. There was a look in her eyes… a look of emptiness. I feared what would fill it. Anger? Hatred? I wasn’t sure I was brave enough to face any of it now. The last time I’d seen her, it was all a dream and she’d reacted more favourably. But seeing her in real life, weak, starved and drained, was something else entirely. It was crazy how my dreams had guided me to Calina, though I wasn’t quite sure why they’d been so clear and specific.

I was grateful for one thing, however. I was grateful that she wasn’t alone. I remembered the girl from an initiation in the Cape Jade pack recently. I doubted that Gerard would want her back, however. Even when she was in her pack, he paid little regard to her and didn’t even attempt to find her after she’d gone missing.

A loud howl sounded from inside the room, and I peeked inside of the glass pane near the top of the door. Mason was really going through it. He was contorted in all sorts of weird positions. He was screaming now, at the top of his lungs his body got ready to change into something completely different. I couldn’t even imagine the pain he was going through, and it would last for the next hours.

This was my fault. I did this to him. I hurt another person because of my impulsiveness. We should have thought a plan through instead of diving head first. But I was in such a rush to find Calina. I didn’t regret it, I just felt responsible. I was so enraged with myself.
