Chapter 41: Bite

Calina

I didn’t need my equipment for this, just my pure, heated rage. I went for Nova first, letting Freya and Vander take care of Lana. I tackled Nova as best as I could. He was much bigger than I was and I didn’t have the strength I needed. Even in my human form, I was much stronger than this. I’d trained to be stronger than this. But my living conditions had been less than optimal, and my body was still adjusting to its new form. But I was at least strong enough to get him to the ground. His teeth snapped and he attempted to claw at me. I didn’t care though, biting through the pain to keep him down. The weakest part was the neck and so I took a moment to think of how I’d attack it. Usually, I’d have a weapon with me and if I wanted to go for the kill, a quick, clean jab right through the neck, letting the blade penetrate right through the throat would work before a clean decapitation. I’d had to get creative here. And so I opened my mouth wide and bite into his furry flesh as hard as I could until I could taste blood. He howled in pain and then threw me off. But I was satisfied. I’d drew my blood and now, I was ready to end him.

Could I assist?

I was startled by the voice in my head and looked around frantically. It definitely didn’t sound like Nova’s voice and instead sounded almost like Vander’s. I gazed at him apprehensively and he nodded, almost confirming the question written all over my face. It must have been a mind link. Although the LHS had only theorised about telepathic communication between werewolves, we’d never been completely certain. Now I could see that it was all true.

Be my guest. I shrugged and pointed toward Nova who looked just about ready to pounce on me. Vander immediately jumped on him, not at all hesitating to bite and scratch. I could practically feel the rage radiating off of him too as he viciously attacked Nova. I looked around for a stick. If I could find a big enough stick, I could use it to brace his neck against as I broke it. And as I gazed around, my eyes met Mason’s. He and Louis had tended to the LHS members who lay unconscious next to Jenna. They both looked a little rough, but all around okay. I was glad to see that my training with Louis throughout the years had been successful.

Then my eyes zeroed in on the blades in Mason’s hand.

“Hey, throw me one of those!” I yelled. He looked down at the blade and then back at me before sighing and throwing it. I caught it swiftly, making Mason scoff. I could tell that he was impressed though. Back when we were dating, he always found my ability to handle blades incredibly sexy.

“Move out of the way!” I yelled out loudly to Vander as I started running towards him. And it felt like muscle memory the way I practically soared towards Nova, aimed for the neck and made a swift, clear cut, severing his head from his neck so quickly I doubted he had time to process what had happened. Everything fell silent for a moment as his head fell to the ground, and then his body. It made a loud thump, sending dust flying into the air.

And then the silence ended when Lana let out a loud roar, breaking free from Freya’s grasp. I thought she’d be coming for me and so did Vander as he stood right in front of me to block her. But surprisingly she leapt right over us and headed straight towards Mason. None of us had enough time to react and she collided with him promptly, sinking her teeth in his neck. He yelled out in pain, his screams filling the densely wooded area. He managed to get one of his blades lodged into her neck and Vander leapt towards him quickly. I thought perhaps Vander would help finish him off, but was pleasantly surprised when he grabbed onto her with his teeth and flung her off of him. He went in for the kill, biting into her neck over and over, tearing to the flesh until she was completely motionless.

I didn’t care about her though, I ran straight to Mason who was bleeding very heavily. I gazed down at him, incredibly worried and concerned.

He looked up at me and smiled, blood dripping down his mouth.

“I- I broke up with Jenna…” he said, almost trying to muster up a laugh. Tears began to stream down my face and I reached out , taking his hand in mine and kissing at the back of it. That was when his face changed to a more serious look. “I’m so s-s-sorry for w-what I did for y-you. I was an a-asshole.”

I nodded but couldn’t open my mouth to say that I forgave him. If I did, I’d just start to cry uncontrollably.

Suddenly he cried out and his hand fell from mine. I began to realise that the wound on his neck had slowly started to heal and the bleeding had stopped too.

“W-what’s happening?” I asked as Freya came rushing to my side, completely naked. It was the least of my concerns.

Her eyes were wide and she turned to me, “He’s changing. She bit him so he’d change.”

So it was intentional. She knew… that Mason was someone I loved. But how? I ignored the growing curiosity in my mind, focussing instead on Mason’s panicked eyes. He tried to speak, but was immediately cut off by another scream of pain. I was so nervous that the bite wouldn’t take well, that it would kill him completely. But my fears were set aside when his eyes started flickering to red and fangs started to protrude through his open lips.

Soon Vander was by my side with Louis following and Erin nearing us cautiously.

“It looks like he’s taking to the bite well. We’ll let his body calm down. And then the next few days we can keep him in the healing centre. He can turn there where we can monitor him.”

“How long will it take for him to fully transform?” I asked, worried about the pain Mason was about to go through.

“It can range from a few hours to a few days,” Freya said, “but he’s doing well. I think it will take only a few hours. The sooner we get him to the packgrounds, the better.”

I was relieved and surprised when I saw my stepfather in the distance, nearing us with a grim look on his face. It brightened the moment he saw my face. Immediately he increased his pace and once he was in front of me, he surprisingly pulled me into an embrace. He didn’t really do that. But it felt nice. It felt like home again.

“I’m so glad that we found you… your mother has been worried,” he said softly. Once he pulled away from me, he gazed down at Mason who was now being carried by Vander.

“What happened to him?” he asked.

“Werewolf bite. He’s in the process of changing. We have to get him home quickly before his bones start breaking. So, I’ll be taking him back to my packgrounds. Freya can take everyone else,” Vander said.

My stepfather nodded and then sighed, “He will be exiled… with no place to go.”

Vander shook his head and looked down at Mason before saying, rather sternly, “He’ll be a member of my pack.”
