chapter 181
chapter 181
Alexander's POV
Moonlight like liquid silver spilled across the boundary line, illuminating the careful dance of warfare preparation around me. I stood on higher ground, eyes tracking my Blood Moon warriors as they moved into position, each one knowing exactly what role they'd play tonight. Every single one of them understood that this was theater—but theater where the blood could become real at any moment.
My nostrils flared, catching the distinct scent of the Black Moon pack drifting from beyond the tree line. Mixed with gunpowder and hostility, Declan's pack was gathering just as we'd arranged. At least the bastard was keeping his word so far.
I turned and strode toward our makeshift command tent, where Lucas was briefing a group of our core fighters, his voice low and authoritative as he detailed the final instructions. But my eyes immediately locked onto Arabella, sitting quietly in the corner. She wore a bulletproof vest that looked too heavy for her small frame, her hands clasped tightly together, knuckles white with tension. She looked so fucking vulnerable, yet there was steel in her spine that hadn't been there when I first met her.
She had no business being here—not with my pups growing inside her. But my stubborn little mate had refused to stay behind.
"I need to confirm your position again," I said, my voice dropping as I approached her. The other warriors tactfully turned their attention back to Lucas, giving us the illusion of privacy. I placed my hand on the back of her neck, feeling her pulse jumping beneath my touch. "Once the fighting starts, you stay in the designated area. If anything changes, you pull back immediately. No discussion, understand me, Puppy?"
She nodded, but the defiance in her eyes told me she had her own ideas. "I'll be careful, Alexander. But you have to promise me too. No unnecessary risks." Her hand came up to cover mine, her fingers trembling slightly. "Alice needs her fathers to come back."
I fought the urge to kiss her, to claim her mouth right there in front of my entire pack. Not the time. Instead, I dragged my thumb across her lower lip in a gesture that had become our silent promise. "I'll come back. Then we'll go home to Alice together and end this shit once and for all."
I could feel Lucas and Tristan watching us, their gazes weighted with the same determination I felt burning in my chest.
---
"It's starting," I said into the radio, my voice cool as ice. The moon had reached its zenith, bathing the battlefield in silver light—the moment when our wolf powers reached their peak. The first howl cut through the night, coming from the Black Moon side, just as we'd agreed.
I nodded to Lucas, who immediately led our first wave of warriors toward the front lines. I remained in position, observing. My Alpha blood was boiling, urging me to join the fight, to tear into those who dared enter my territory—even knowing this was all staged. Especially when it came to Declan, that fucker who'd dared to look at my mate with interest.
The battlefield quickly descended into controlled chaos. Werewolf howls echoed through the trees, bodies collided with convincing thuds, and warriors on both sides orchestrated an impressive display of "injuries," with blood packets bursting to create the illusion of serious wounds. The smell of blood filled the air, but I could distinguish between the fake blood and real injuries. Some of these wounds looked a little too genuine. Were Declan's people playing too rough?
"Alpha, western sector showing anomalies," Tristan's voice came through my radio, calm but alert. I immediately turned toward the west, spotting several Black Moon fighters down, looking less like theater and more like actual casualties. Fuck. Were Declan's people going off-script?
I let out a low growl and shifted into my wolf form. My senses sharpened instantly, giving me better control of the situation. I raced toward the front lines, spotting Lucas already addressing the problem, adjusting tactics on the fly. He caught my eye and nodded slightly—a warning not to let anger cloud my judgment. Remember the plan.
Near the edge of the fighting, I spotted Declan, also in wolf form, his fur black as midnight. Our eyes met across the battlefield, and I read the same message in his gaze: some warriors were getting too enthusiastic, forgetting this was meant to be choreographed. Fucking fantastic.
---
Two hours into the "battle," fallen warriors littered the ground. Some were truly injured, though none seriously, but most were playing their parts, sprawled dramatically across the dirt and grass. I'd shifted back to human form, scanning the entire area. No sign of Frank and his wandering wolves yet. Where the hell was that bastard?
"Southeast approach, multiple heat signatures," Johnson's voice crackled through the radio. "Not ours, not Black Moon either."
Finally. I raised my hand, making the pre-arranged signal. Blood Moon warriors immediately understood, adjusting their positions to create more openings, deliberately appearing to lose ground. Across the field, I could see Black Moon fighters making similar adjustments—Declan standing on a rock formation, seeming to assess the battlefield while actually waiting for my signal.
"Keep track of Arabella's position," I murmured to Lucas as he passed by, blood smeared across his face in an artistic display of fake injury. She should be in the secure area we'd designated, but my mate had a habit of putting herself in danger. She'd promised to be careful, but promises meant shit when you thought someone you loved was in danger.
"Prepare for phase two," I ordered through the radio. "Wanderers approaching from southeast. Maintain the illusion—both packs weakened from fighting."
The air seemed to thicken with tension as everyone waited. Then I heard it—multiple wolf packs howling in the distance, the sound wilder and more disorganized than anything we'd arranged. The wandering wolves had arrived.
They emerged from the tree line like a pack of scavengers, at least thirty werewolves, most in human form but with fangs and claws extended, eyes glowing with primal hunger. Their expressions revealed their thoughts as clear as day—greed and bloodlust at the prospect of two weakened packs ripe for the taking.
I scanned their ranks for Frank, finally spotting him toward the rear—a burly middle-aged man with a thick beard and calculating eyes. I could see the family resemblance to Wesley, which made my stomach turn. This was the motherfucker who'd put a price on my mate's head, who wanted to drag her back into a nightmare.
"What a sight," Frank's voice carried across the suddenly quiet battlefield. "Two supposedly powerful packs, tearing each other to shreds until you're both vulnerable. Perfect timing." His gaze swept over the field before landing on me, eyes narrowing. "Alpha Harrington, I hear you've been harboring my daughter-in-law. Where is she? Hand her over, and perhaps your pack might survive this night."
Primal rage surged up my spine, setting every nerve ending on fire. He dared to speak of Arabella as if she were property, as if she belonged to him in any way. I clenched my jaw hard enough to crack teeth, forcing myself to play my role as the exhausted Alpha.
"Your daughter-in-law?" I replied, deliberately injecting scorn into my voice. "You mean the woman who killed your son?" I watched his face carefully, enjoying the shock that replaced his smug expression.
"What did you say?" he roared, his facade of control crumbling instantly. "Wesley is dead?" His eyes grew wild, darting around the battlefield as if expecting to see his son's body. "Did she do it? Or was it you?"
I couldn't help the cold smile that spread across my face. "Guess."
My eyes met Declan's across the field, and he gave an almost imperceptible nod. Showtime.
