Chapter 69 Via Text (Tyler POV)

Chapter 69 Via Text (Tyler POV)

Permanent separation from physical reality. I'd be a ghost forever. Could never touch, never eat, never experience physical sensation again. Would exist in the space between life and death indefinitely. No rest, no moving on, no peace.
"That's..." I can't finish the sentence. "Echo, that's torture. Existing as a ghost forever, watching life happen without being able to participate..."
It's better than complete dissolution. Better than letting Asmodai possess me. Better than failing you, failing Sam, failing the mission. Text appears faster now, like Echo is racing against time. Tyler, I need you to support this choice. Need you to tell me it's okay to transform instead of dying completely. Because right now, I'm terrified and alone in the dark and the only thing keeping me fighting is knowing you're out there believing in me.
I look at Sam, at Kieran, at Marcus. They're all watching me, waiting for me to make a choice that will determine Echo's fate.
"Echo." I type carefully, making sure every word is what I actually mean. "If you transform into a permanent ghost, will you still be you? Still be the person who makes sarcastic jokes and calls me out on my anxieties and somehow makes fighting demons feel less hopeless?"
I think so. Hope so. Won't know until I try.
"Then try." I'm typing through tears now. "Echo, I'd rather have you as a ghost...conscious and able to communicate...than lose you completely to dissolution. Transform. Embrace the ghostly form. Become whatever you need to become to survive. I'll support you no matter what form that takes."
Even if it means I can never touch you? Never hold your hand or kiss you or experience any physical intimacy ever again?
"Even then." The admission hurts. "Echo, I didn't fall for you because of your physical presence. I fell for you because of who you are...brave and fierce and determined to help people despite your own trauma. That doesn't change whether you're solid or ghost or anything in between."
Tyler, I...
The text cuts off. My laptop screen goes black.
"No!" I'm frantically hitting keys, trying to restore connection. "Echo! Echo, come back! Don't..."
The screen flickers back to life. But the text that appears now is different...shakier, less coherent, like it's being written by someone whose consciousness is fragmenting:
Transforming now. Hurts. Everything hurts. Tyler, if this works...if I survive as partial ghost...tell Sam I'm ready to anchor. Tell her I'll hold as long as I can. Tell her...
More text, but it's dissolving as it writes itself, letters fading before complete words form.
Then: I love you. Past tense because I'm dying. Present tense because ghost. Future tense because whatever I become, it will still be me loving you across dimensions.
The laptop goes dark. No amount of key-pressing brings it back.
"She's gone." I stare at the blank screen. "Sam, Echo is...she's either transformed or dissolved completely. And I don't know which."
"We'll find out at the ritual." Sam touches my shoulder. "Tyler, if Echo succeeded...if she became a partial ghost instead of dissolving...she'll manifest at Pike Place Market when we need her. If she failed..." Sam stops. "We'll deal with that when we know for sure."
"And until then I just...what? Keep researching? Keep planning? Pretend my heart isn't shattering?" I close the laptop. "Sam, I can't do this. Can't function not knowing if Echo is alive or dead or something in between."
"You can." Kieran moves to stand beside Sam. "Tyler, I've been functioning not knowing if Sam will cross the corruption threshold and force me to execute her. Marcus has been functioning not knowing if his thirty-five years of service to Asmodai can be redeemed. We're all operating under impossible uncertainty. You're not alone in that."
"But you don't love Sam the way I..." I stop, realizing what I just said. "I mean...you care about her tactically, but it's not..."
"It's not romantic love." Kieran's voice is dry. "Tyler, I'm aware I'm emotionally compromised regarding Sam. Been aware for days. Doesn't change the tactical reality that I might have to kill her in a few hours. Love doesn't exempt you from difficult choices. If anything, it makes them harder."
"Then how do you cope?" I ask again.
"I focus on what I can control." Kieran returns to his window position. "I can control my weapon maintenance. My tactical positioning. My readiness to make the necessary choice when the moment comes. I can't control whether Sam crosses the threshold. Can't control whether the ritual succeeds. Can't control whether I survive tonight. But I can control my response to those outcomes."
"That's...that's actually helpful." I reopen my laptop, checking fragment locations. "Okay. Okay, focus on what I can control. I can control research quality. Logistics coordination. Communication protocols. I can be the best damn tactical support Sam and Echo have ever had."
"That's the spirit." Sam pulls up chair beside me. "Tyler, show me the fragment destruction timeline. We need to optimize the sequence based on what I learned in the pocket dimension about balancing Nephilim abilities."
We work for ninety minutes in focused silence. Marcus coordinates police response for the upcoming ritual. Kieran scouts additional defensive positions. Sam reviews fae intelligence from the memory crystal. And I build the most comprehensive tactical timeline of my life...fragment locations, destruction sequences, fallback positions, emergency protocols for every scenario I can imagine.
It's not enough. It will never be enough. But it's what I can control, so I control it with obsessive precision.
My laptop screen flickers again. Text appears:
Tyler. I'm here. Transformed. Partial ghost now. Can see things I couldn't see before. There are spies.
"Spies?" I type back immediately. "Echo, what do you mean spies?"
Angelic spies. In Seattle's supernatural underground. They've been monitoring the investigation. Monitoring Sam. Preparing to execute her the moment she crosses threshold. Tyler, there are six of them. Disguised as human refugees from the underground. They've been embedded for weeks.
"Sam!" I turn my laptop so she can see. "Echo's back. She's a ghost. And she's saying there are angelic spies in the supernatural community."
Sam reads the text, her face going pale. "Echo, how can you see them? How do you know they're angels?"
Partial ghost form lets me see across dimensions. Can perceive spiritual signatures normal humans can't detect. The spies are trying to hide their angelic nature but in ghost-vision they glow with celestial fire. Six agents, all embedded in the refugee population Lord Ash rescued from the pocket dimension.
"The refugees." Kieran turns from the window. "Echo, are you saying angels infiltrated Asmodai's pocket dimension specifically to position themselves near Sam?"
Yes. They've been waiting for her to use enough Nephilim power that they could justify execution. Waiting for her to cross the threshold. Tyler, tell Sam she needs to identify and neutralize these spies before tonight's ritual. If angels attack during the gateway opening, everything fails.
"Neutralize angelic spies." I laugh, but there's no humor in it. "Echo, how exactly do we neutralize angels? They're literal celestial beings with powers we can barely comprehend."
I don't know. But Sam will figure it out. She always does. More text appears: Tyler, I need you to know something. The transformation worked but it hurts. Existing as partial ghost means I'm conscious of every moment I'm not physical. Conscious of every touch I can't feel, every sensation I can't experience. It's like...like being hungry forever but never able to eat. Does that make sense?
"It makes horrible sense." I'm crying again. "Echo, I'm so sorry. Sorry you have to exist like that. Sorry my blood sacrifice wasn't enough to keep you solid. Sorry I couldn't protect you better."
Don't apologize for keeping me alive. Tyler, without your sacrifice, I'd have dissolved completely days ago. Your twelve years bought me time to become something new. Something that can help stop Asmodai. That's worth the pain of permanent ghostly existence.
"Is it really worth it?" I type the question I'm terrified to ask. "Echo, if you could choose...if you could go back and let yourself dissolve instead of transforming...would you?"
Long pause. Then: Ask me after the ritual. If we win, if Seattle survives, if the invasion is stopped...then yes, the transformation was worth it. But if we fail, if I spent my final hours in agony for nothing...then I'll have some regrets.
"That's fair." I wipe my eyes. "Echo, I...I need you to know that I meant what I said earlier. About loving you regardless of your form. I know it's probably awkward confessing feelings to a ghost through laptop text, but..."
Tyler, stop. Don't confess via text. Save it for after the ritual when we can talk properly. When I can manifest visibly and you can see my face while I tell you I love you too. Deal?
