Chapter 68 Echo's Transformation (Tyler POV)
Chapter 68 Echo's Transformation (Tyler POV)
Echo is dying in the spirit realm while I'm stuck in the physical world researching fragment locations, and the helplessness is going to drive me insane.
"Sam, we need to do something!" I slam my laptop shut, startling Marcus who's coordinating tactical units from across the Central Library reading room. "Echo reached out...I felt it...she and Rhodes were trying to communicate but the connection broke and now I can't sense her at all!"
"Tyler, calm down." Sam looks up from the fae memory crystal she's been studying. "Echo became a full ghost. She's in the spirit realm now. We can't just..."
"We can't just let her fade!" My voice rises loud enough that other library patrons turn to stare. "Sam, Echo dissolved herself to save Kieran. She sacrificed everything so he could continue fighting. The least we can do is try to help her stay conscious long enough to serve as tonight's anchor!"
"How?" Kieran asks quietly from his position by the window. He's been standing there for twenty minutes, processing the guilt of Echo's sacrifice. "Tyler, Echo is pure spirit now. She exists in a dimension we can't access. We can't physically reach her. Can't provide life force like I did with the blood magic. Can't..."
"There has to be something!" I'm pacing now, unable to sit still. "Marcus, you've been working with supernatural entities for thirty-five years. Tell me there's a way to contact spirits who've dissolved below manifestation threshold."
"There are methods." Marcus closes his tactical planning documents. "Séances. Spirit boards. Medium channeling. But Tyler, all of those require having a medium to facilitate contact. And our only medium is currently the spirit we're trying to reach."
"Then we find another medium." I pull out my phone, searching. "Seattle has to have other psychics with spirit communication abilities. We find one, we bring them here, we..."
"We waste time and energy on a rescue mission when we have five hours until the ritual and five fragments left to destroy." Sam's voice is gentle but firm. "Tyler, I know Echo matters to you. I know you care about her. But we can't save her right now. We can only complete the mission and hope she's strong enough to manifest when we need her."
"That's not good enough!" I turn on Sam, and I see her flinch at my anger. "You're asking me to just...what? Hope? Pray? Cross my fingers and assume Echo will somehow survive long enough to anchor the ritual despite being a dissolving ghost in Asmodai's domain?"
"I'm asking you to trust her." Sam stands, moving closer. "Tyler, Echo made her choice. She knew dissolving to save Kieran would cost her everything. But she did it anyway because she believed in the mission. Believed we could stop Asmodai. Don't insult that faith by falling apart now."
"I gave her twelve years of my life!" The words tear out. "Sam, I literally shortened my lifespan so Echo could be solid enough to fight. And she used that borrowed time to become a ghost. How am I supposed to just...accept that? How am I supposed to keep working when the person I..." I stop, but everyone knows what I was about to say.
"When the person you love is dying." Kieran finishes quietly. "Tyler, I understand. Believe me, I understand what it's like to watch someone you care about sacrifice themselves. I've been watching Sam do it all week. Watched Brenda do it eight years ago. The helplessness never gets easier."
"Then how do you cope?" I collapse into a chair. "Kieran, how do you keep functioning when someone you love is in danger and you can't do anything to help?"
"I remember that my functioning is what gives them the best chance of survival." Kieran moves from the window. "Tyler, if you fall apart, Sam loses her researcher. Loses the person coordinating logistics and timing and intelligence. Echo's sacrifice becomes meaningless because we fail the mission without you. But if you keep working...if you channel your fear and grief into productive action...then Echo's sacrifice enables success. Enables the mission she died to support."
"She's not dead yet." But I'm not sure I believe it.
"Then act like it." Sam kneels beside my chair. "Tyler, I need you. Specifically you, not just any researcher. I need your mind working on fragment destruction timing. Need your logistics expertise coordinating between me and Marcus and the fae warriors. Need your..." She stops. "Need you to be Echo's anchor the way she was supposed to be mine. Need you to hold her memory, her purpose, her faith in this mission even when she can't hold it herself."
"I don't know how to do that." My voice cracks. "Sam, I'm nineteen years old. I'm a college dropout who researches supernatural phenomena for a psychic investigator. I'm not...I don't know how to be someone's anchor."
"You've been my anchor all week." Sam squeezes my shoulder. "Tyler, every time I've doubted myself, every time I've thought about giving up, you've been there. Researching. Planning. Believing we could win even when the odds were impossible. That's what being an anchor means. You've already been doing it."
"For you, maybe. But Echo..." I stop, feeling emotion threatening to overwhelm logic. "Sam, Echo was supposed to survive this. Was supposed to be solid enough after the ritual that I could tell her properly how I felt. Could ask her out without it being a deathbed confession. Could maybe have something normal and good for once in my disaster of a life."
"Normal and good died when demons started murdering psychics." Marcus speaks from across the room. "Tyler, I spent thirty-five years chasing normal and good. Believing if I just solved enough crimes, prevented enough deaths, made enough heroic choices, I'd earn something normal and good. All I earned was corruption and compromise and the knowledge that nothing stays normal in supernatural warfare."
"That's depressing." But I hear the truth in it.
"It's realistic." Marcus returns to his tactical planning. "Tyler, you want to help Echo? Stop fantasizing about the normal future you'll never have and start focusing on the abnormal present you're actually living. Find a way to contact her spirit. Find a way to give her strength across dimensional barriers. Find a way to make her sacrifice mean something."
"How?" I open my laptop again, desperate for something productive to do. "Marcus, I'm not a medium. I don't have psychic abilities. I can't reach across dimensions or communicate with spirits or..."
My laptop screen flickers. Words appear that I didn't type:
Tyler. Can you see this?
"What the..." I stare at the text. "Sam, come look at this."
Sam moves to read over my shoulder. "That's not your typing."
"No." My heart rate spikes. "Sam, I think...Echo? Is that you?"
More text appears: Yes. Can't talk long. Rhodes dissolved. I'm dissolving. But trying to reach you before I fade completely.
"Echo!" I'm typing frantically now. "Where are you? Are you okay? Can we help?"
In spirit realm. Not okay. Can't be helped. Tyler, listen: Rhodes warned me about Asmodai's plans. I'm supposed to be secondary vessel. Backup to Maria. But I fought him. Rhodes and I fused consciousnesses to resist possession. It worked but cost too much. We're both dissolving now.
"Fused consciousnesses?" Sam reads the text as it appears. "Echo, that's...that's advanced spirit magic. How did you know how to do that?"
Didn't. Instinct. Desperation. Tyler's twelve years of life force gave me enough spiritual strength to attempt fusion. Without that sacrifice, Rhodes and I would have been possessed immediately. So thank you. Your years bought me time to fight back.
"I don't care about the years." I'm crying now, tears blurring the laptop screen. "Echo, how do we save you? How do we stop the dissolution?"
You don't. I'm too far gone. But there's a compromise. I can embrace partial ghostly transformation instead of complete dissolution. Become permanently ghost-like...visible but not solid, conscious but not physical. It would let me serve as tonight's anchor while maintaining enough coherence to communicate.
"What's the cost?" Sam asks, reading my mind.
