Chapter 56 Dennis, Thank You
As I pondered, my recently settled heart began racing once more. I edged half a step closer to the wall, then abruptly spun around to face the window!
The breeze outside was still blowing the bottom of the curtain, but there was no shadow on it.
Was I just overthinking? But those footprints outside the window were real, someone had definitely been there.
With that in mind, I grabbed the teacup from the table to use as a weapon and walked back to the window.
When I pulled the curtain open again, it was still empty, with only the faint streetlight flickering outside.
I opened the window, stuck my head out, and used my phone's flashlight to shine down—this time, I could see clearly that there was nothing below.
Damn it! Whatever, I'm going back to sleep!
I shut the window, pulled the curtains, and as I turned to go, a nagging feeling of forgetting something crept over me.
Wait, I didn't hear the sound of someone falling, did I?
Thinking of this, I turned around again, pulled the curtain open without hesitation, and looked up at the top of the window!
I shone the flashlight in my hand towards the top of the window.
In the bright light, I noticed a head hanging down from the window frame, its face a ghastly purple-black, eyebrows sagging, eyes shut, gently swaying with the breeze.
"Zack?"
I immediately recognized it was Zack's head and quickly turned to look at the bed, seeing Zack still there. So whose head was outside the window?
I took a step back and looked outside again, but Zack's head was gone.
I took a deep breath, pulled out my Sunstrike, took a step forward, and stuck my head out, looking up.
That head suddenly disappeared; there was nothing else except for the air conditioning unit above.
"Damn it!"
I cursed under my breath, closed the window and curtains, and turned to walk to the bed. "Messing with me in the middle of the night!"
Maybe it was because Zack had just passed away, and the magnetic field was a bit strange, causing me to have some hallucinations.
I lay back on the bed, turned off the flashlight, and pulled the blanket over me, thinking I should get some sleep.
The room returned to its calm state.
I closed my eyes, thinking I needed to get some rest for the journey in the morning. In a daze, I suddenly heard faint snoring in the room. Thinking it was just my own tiredness, I rolled over and coughed. But as the room fell silent again, the snoring persisted.
It wasn't me, it was Zack.
There was no way such faint snoring could come from the next room. I held my breath and listened closely; it was definitely coming from Zack.
Can a dead person snore?
I knew it, I shouldn't have slept in the same room with a dead person I don't know.
I reached for my Sunstrike, took a deep breath, and turned to look at Zack's bed in the dim light.
What sent chills down my spine was the sight of the white sheet, once draped over Zack, now lying flat on the bed with Zack mysteriously gone!
I got out of bed and walked to Zack's bed, lifting the blanket. The bed was empty, and Zack was gone.
"Dennis..."
I was stunned when suddenly a child's voice called from behind me!
The sound was so terrifying that it instantly gave me chills all over my back!
"Who?" I didn't dare turn around and asked in a low voice.
"Dennis, thank you..."
I was stunned. "You, you are Zack?"
"Yes."
"Why are you thanking me?" I was puzzled.
"Thank you for trying to save me, thank you for not abandoning me."
I swallowed hard, feeling a bit of pain in my heart for some reason. "Zack, what illness did you have?"
Zack sighed softly behind me. "I don't know either. After Harlan died, several of our family members got sick. This illness is incurable." Harlan Roach was the mysterious person who saved Anthony.
I sighed too. "Then, why do you live in the caves of Netherworld Mountain?"
"Harlan said our ancestors lived there. It's our roots. If we leave, we lose roots."
I didn't understand what that meant and didn't know what to say for a moment.
Suddenly, I felt a pair of pale little hands wrap around my waist, and I could even feel the coldness of the hands.
For some reason, I didn't feel any fear at that moment.
"So warm." Zack's voice was right behind me. "Dennis, thank you for letting me feel the warmth of the world one last time. Actually, I don't want to go, I don't want to leave Isidora..."
"Zack, you..." My nose tingled, and tears welled up in my eyes.
"I'm leaving, Dennis. If you can, please take care of Isidora and my family... Thank you, Dennis."
After saying that, Zack's hands slowly let go, and tears streamed down my face. I quickly turned around, wanting to say something more to him.
But behind me, there was no sign of Zack.
