Chapter 55 The Person on the Windowsill

A few moments later, the faint white Justbreeze around Zack vanished without a trace.

I turned to Lorenzo. "Lorenzo, what did you see?"

Lorenzo sighed. "I used the Bloodstone on him, and it didn't detect any Sinwaft. Instead, the Bloodstone melted instantly. This means Zack doesn't have Sinwaft, but he might have a really strong Justbreeze. Right?"

I nodded, remembering how Lorenzo had taught me to use the Bloodstone when I couldn't sense Sinwaft or Justbreeze. But this method was tricky and not always spot-on.

Isidora asked me softly, "Can you save Zack?"

For a moment, I was at a loss. Alicia hugged Isidora. "Isidora, Zack has left us, but it's only for a while. He's gone to a beautiful place, and when you grow old, you'll see him again, okay?"

Isidora fought back tears, her young face reflecting deep sorrow. She glanced at Alicia, nodding resolutely, displaying remarkable strength.

We tidied up a bit. Lorenzo bunked with Anthony, Alicia with Isidora, and I shared a room with Zack, who was already gone.

Honestly, I wasn't thrilled about it, but with no spare rooms available, we couldn't risk Zack having a room to himself. If he was discovered, it would be a disaster.

By the time I finished washing up and lay down, it was already eleven at night.

Zack lay on the bed, completely covered by a white summer quilt.

I was still a bit freaked out, so I left the bathroom light on for some comfort.

After two days of chaos, I was exhausted. I turned over and fell into a deep sleep.

The presence of a deceased person in the room unsettled me. I struggled to stay asleep, drifting in and out. After tossing and turning several times, I finally gave up on sleep. I picked up my phone and saw it was already 3 a.m.

Fiona messaged me asking my whereabouts. I responded briefly to avoid causing her concern.

Restless, I mulled over the evening's events, unable to sleep.

Zack had such a clear Justbreeze, so why did he die?

I couldn't figure it out.

I got up, went to the bathroom, and then lay back down.

It was already past four in the morning, and I could see the sky starting to lighten.

I turned over and looked out the window.

The blue curtains were tightly drawn, and with each gust of wind, the lower edges fluttered, resembling a subtle wave, as if someone unseen was beckoning to me.

Was there someone there?

I glanced over and felt a chill. The streetlights outside were still on, casting a dim light on the curtains, vaguely revealing a small figure standing outside!

I sat up with a start, rubbed my eyes, and looked carefully at the window.

As expected, a small figure was reflected on the curtains, swaying gently in the breeze, appearing incredibly eerie.

"Who's there?" I asked.

I wondered if it could be something else, like a cloth cover on the air conditioner outside the hotel being blown off?

No one answered in the dim light, and I didn't dare to get out of bed, so I just stared at the figure from a distance.

After a few seconds, the figure suddenly swayed and then moved a step to the left!

My heart raced. If it moved one more step to the left, it could grab the half-open window handle!

Was it trying to break in?

I looked closer. The person was no more than 4 feet 7 inches tall, like a dwarf.

"Who... are you?" I asked again, my voice shaky.

Naturally, no one answered.

The wind outside seemed to be getting stronger, blowing through the window and lifting the curtains. The person appeared to be unsteady, swaying a couple of times before suddenly freezing and then falling downwards!

I was on the fourth floor, and falling from here would be bad news.

"Hey!" I instinctively shouted, hurriedly got out of bed, and rushed over to pull open the curtains. Outside was empty, but there were several clear footprints on the windowsill.

The breeze blew, and the cold sweat I had broken out in made me shiver.

I leaned out and looked down; it was pitch black below, and I couldn't see anything.

Thinking of what had happened at Ronald's house before, it seemed both real and unreal. So I decided to let it go.

Since I couldn't see anything, I would just assume it was fake.

I pulled the curtains closed again, intending to go back to sleep.

After taking a few steps, I suddenly stopped—wait, if it was an illusion and there was no one outside, then how did those clear footprints appear on the windowsill? But if it was real, why didn't I hear anything hit the ground?

The bathroom light cast my shadow long on the wall.

There was only one possibility: the person outside didn't fall at all.
