Chapter 36 A Thief Broke In
Chapter 36 A Thief Broke In
Outside the window, Dorian had no idea that Cordelia inside the room had already noticed his presence. He was now hugging the drainpipe, climbing his way up toward the third floor.
When he reached the window, he pulled something out of his back pocket, fiddled with it for a moment, and the window opened with a click.
He slowed his movements, gently pushed the window open, and slipped inside.
If it weren't for this incident, he probably would never have gotten into Cordelia's bedroom in his entire life.
Once inside, he took a quick look around. In the dim night, he couldn't see anything clearly—just an empty room with only a wardrobe and a bed.
Under the covers on the bed was a raised figure, completely still, proving that the person in bed was sleeping soundly.
Dorian didn't dare delay. He quickly pulled out a finger-sized flashlight from his pocket, gently held it in his mouth, and when the light came on, casting a faint glow, he tiptoed toward the wardrobe.
What he didn't know was that behind him, Cordelia slowly opened her eyes, staring at him as he rummaged through drawers and searched everywhere.
Watching his movements, Cordelia instantly realized he must be looking for that necklace. To react so quickly and send someone to steal it—Julie's moves were pretty fast.
Cordelia could only see Dorian's blurry silhouette. He looked pretty big, but she wondered if he could take a beating. It wouldn't be fun if he got knocked half to death before she even got started.
With this thought, Cordelia yawned and turned over.
Hearing the movement, Dorian froze in place. After a moment, when there was no more sound behind him, he carefully looked back.
Seeing that Cordelia on the bed was still sleeping with her eyes closed, he relaxed again.
The wardrobe wasn't large, and he soon turned it completely upside down, but found nothing.
If it wasn't in the wardrobe, then only Cordelia's bed was left.
With this thought, Dorian slowly turned around and walked toward the bed step by step.
The instant his hand was about to reach the bed, Cordelia moved.
Her figure flashed like lightning, and the dagger in her hand stabbed viciously toward Dorian's neck.
Dorian never expected that Cordelia on the bed had been awake all along and was ambushing him. He froze for a split second. In that split second, it was too late for him to dodge.
He could only barely lean back. His neck escaped, but the dagger landed on his chest. After a sharp pain, a long gash opened on his chest, flesh rolling open, blood spurting out instantly.
In pain, Dorian let out a muffled grunt, clutching his chest wound and quickly backing away.
Cordelia calmly got out of bed, casually grabbed a corner of the bedsheet, and slowly wiped the blood off her dagger. Her cool voice was particularly clear in the darkness. "Who sent you?"
Dorian clutched his chest, staring at the dagger in her hand with lingering fear. In his shock, he couldn't say a word.
He'd been too careless!
He never imagined that Cordelia would be this skilled. Just one encounter and she'd injured him.
Dorian had been fighting since childhood and grew up brawling, but he'd never met a woman who could fight like Cordelia.
Just one move, and she'd wounded him.
Fear rose in Dorian's heart. He knew that if he didn't leave now, he probably never would.
With this thought, he rushed quickly toward the window.
He was fast, but Cordelia's figure was faster. Just as he reached the window and was about to climb out, Cordelia kicked out viciously. Dorian let out a scream and tumbled headfirst out the window.
"Who's there? What was that sound!"
Dorian's scream was especially clear in the silent night. Even Jack, who was asleep, was startled awake and sat up.
After sitting up, he reached to turn on the bedside lamp, but couldn't get it to light no matter what.
"Why is the power out?"
Jack muttered, wanting to call Willie, but Marigold beside him, also awakened, draped her arm across his waist and said drowsily, "Honey, go to sleep. It's not even dawn yet. If there's no power, there's no power."
"Alright, I won't call. We'll deal with it tomorrow."
With that, Jack also yawned, put down his phone, and burrowed back under the covers.
After the scream, Cordelia walked to the window and looked down. All she could see was pitch darkness—no telling whether Dorian was dead or alive after the fall.
This was the third floor. Even if Dorian fell, he probably wouldn't die. As long as he wasn't dead, he would escape.
He escaped, but this matter wasn't over yet.
With this thought, Cordelia put on her clothes, turned on her phone's flashlight, and went downstairs.
Jack had just closed his eyes when he heard a huge noise at the bedroom door.
The sound was like a thunderclap, instantly startling both of them awake.
"What was that?"
Marigold, who had sat up, was terrified by the loud banging at the door. She grabbed Jack's sleeve. "Honey, who's banging on our bedroom door?"
She didn't need to say it—with such a loud noise, Jack naturally heard it clearly.
He trembled and called out, "Who's there?"
"It's me. Open the door!"
Cordelia's voice came from outside the door, infuriating Jack.
Was Cordelia deliberately tormenting them in the middle of the night instead of sleeping?
He angrily put on his slippers, went downstairs, opened the door, and roared at Cordelia outside, "What are you doing, not sleeping in the middle of the night!"
"Dad, you have quite a temper. That's not good—you need to work on that!"
As Cordelia spoke, she raised her phone and shone the light on Jack's face. He immediately squinted and raised his hand to block the light. "Cordelia, you better give me a good explanation, or I won't let this go!"
"Alright then. Does someone climbing through my window and possibly dying count?"
As Cordelia spoke, she deliberately shone the light on the dagger in her hand.
Seeing the blood-stained dagger, Jack was so scared he took a big step back.
After a long while, Jack finally trembled and shrieked, "Cordelia, what are you doing? Are you trying to kill someone?"
"Dad, that's quite a thing to say. Murder is illegal."
Cordelia helpfully opened the bedroom door, then waved the light around. "But if you keep dawdling and don't hurry up, our villa really will become a crime scene, because I just kicked the burglar who climbed into my room off the third floor."
Hearing this, Jack and Marigold were even more frightened.
"There really was a burglar in your room?"
Cordelia nodded and shone the light on Jack's face again—pale and ghastly. Honestly, Jack's face was scarier than most horror movies.
"Shouldn't we get someone to fix the power first?"
As soon as Cordelia said this, Jack remembered—right, why was the power out? This was an unusual occurrence that had never happened before.
With this thought, he picked up the phone and called Willie.
