“Estelle, you did a great job today, which is far beyond my expectation,” Mr. Mysterious said as he caressed her hair gently, “York is selfish and suspicious, and he never let himself suffer any losses. He was afraid that he would go to jail, so he couldn’t wait to change the legal person. You were so smart to take this opportunity to get the company back.”
Nestling against his chest, Estelle smelled the faint scents of smoke and cologne.
To her surprise, the mixture of the two scents was pleasant to smell.
“Sir, did you smoke again?”
“You can still smell the smoke? I’m sorry. I smoked a lot just now.”
Shaking her head in his arms, Estelle said gently, “It’s okay. You have more problems to deal with than I do, so if you want to smoke to relieve your pressure, just do it. But don’t smoke too much. After all, smoking is not good for your health.”
“Okay.” Mr. Mysterious hugged her tightly in his arms.
“Today is Yohan's first day of school. He must be disappointed that I didn’t pick him up,” Estelle uttered as she remembered Yohan.
“No, he is very happy today. When I went to pick him up, the teacher told me that Yohan is sociable and has become familiar with most of his classmates in just one day.”
“He must have bragged to his classmates that his father is a superhero,” Estelle chuckled instantly.
“Yes.” Mr. Mysterious chuckled too.
“Yohan absolutely adores you.”
“Then I should quit smoking. I need to set a good example for Yohan in every aspect.”
Suddenly thinking of something, Estelle raised her head and said in surprise, “Sir, you went to the school to pick up Yohan in person? Then many people have seen your face!”
“Yes.”
Estelle was stunned, saying in worry, “But... Not long ago, Cristofer and Gretchen hit the headlines... There should be a lot of people who know him. Are you scared that...”
“Estelle,” Mr. Mysterious gently put his finger to her lips and interrupted her. “Tim is right. I can’t always hide myself. I don’t want to be a useless coward who is unable to protect you when you are bullied.”
“Sir, it’s important not to let the opinions of others affect you, and please don’t blame yourself. I understand that you have your own challenges, and it’s crucial to keep your identity concealed for now,” Estelle reassured him.
Upon hearing her words, Mr. Mysterious leaned forward, gently kissed her on the lips, and whispered, “Estelle, you remind me of the person you used to be.”
“What?” Estelle was confused.
“You are more like the twenty-year-old Estelle, who is enthusiastic, sincere, frank, and simple,” Mr. Mysterious said as he gently raised her chin and looked into her eyes. “And your beautiful sparkling eyes are like bright stars in the sky.”
Blushing with a tinge of embarrassment, Estelle confessed, “I admit that when I was twenty years old, I was quite naive. I made mistakes, especially in choosing the wrong person to love. Looking back, if I had been more mature, perhaps my life wouldn’t have taken such a challenging turn. I wouldn’t have begged Cristofer repeatedly for forgiveness nor felt the need to explain myself constantly. I was not responsible for the car accident that took place, and it’s crucial to understand that I, too, was a victim. My father, who also died in the accident, was an innocent victim. If Cristofer truly loved me, he would have trusted and believed in me. However, he never showed any trust or love towards me.”
“Maybe.”
“If I could turn the clock back, I would have divorced Cristofer, taken good care of my mother, and worked hard to earn money for Yohan's treatment.”
“But if you hadn’t been pregnant with Yvonne, Yohan wouldn’t have been able to undergo the stem cell transplant even with enough money,” Mr. Mysterious reminded her. “What was your plan to save Yohan if you had gone through with the divorce from Cristofer then?”
Estelle paused momentarily, gathering her thoughts, and replied seriously, “I had intended to drug Cristofer, following Gretchen’s example. Once I became pregnant, I would have gone abroad to take care of Yohan.”
“Good idea.”
“Sir, if you could return in time, would you come to me earlier? Would you keep me company when I was in the most helpless and saddest time six years ago?” Estelle asked curiously.
“If I could go back in time...” Mr. Mysterious murmured, with a distant look in his eyes and lost in thought.
Gazing at him, Estelle waited for his answer quietly.
A few seconds later, Mr. Mysterious looked up at the starry sky and suddenly smiled. Then he said affectionately, “If I could go back in time, I would be with you and never let you leave me, no matter what happened and no matter how desperate and helpless I was.”
Resting her head against his chest, Estelle savored the comforting rhythm of his heartbeat as she posed a tender question, “If you had the chance to start over, would you pursue me before I became involved with Cristofer?”
Mr. Mysterious held her gently and replied with conviction, “Absolutely. I would have pursued and protected you fiercely with all my strength.”
A hint of wistfulness filled Estelle’s voice as she whispered, “Oh if only you had come into my life sooner. Things might have been so different, and I would have cherished every moment.”
Upon hearing her words, Mr. Mysterious let out a sigh of remorse and murmured, “I deeply regret not appearing in your life sooner.”
“Really?”
“Yes, I’m very regretful. This is probably the second most regrettable thing in my life.”
‘The second most regrettable thing? Well, maybe the most regrettable thing in his life is about his family,’ Estelle thought.
“Sir, the most regrettable thing for you is that you didn’t go to see your parents and lost the chance to see them the last time?” she asked.
“No.”
“No?” Estelle was puzzled and surprised when hearing his answer.
“The most regrettable thing for me is about what I’m doing now. After everything is settled and we go abroad, I’ll tell you what it is,” Mr. Mysterious assured her.
“Okay.”
Mr. Mysterious then hugged her more tightly, gently rested his chin on her head, and thought, ‘The most regrettable thing in my life was that I mistakenly believed in Gretchen.’
Suddenly, Estelle’s phone rang.
When she was about to take out her phone, Mr. Mysterious hugged her more tightly to stop her.
Feeling a little displeased, Mr. Mysterious said with a frown, “You’ve got off work. Leave the work for tomorrow.”
Hearing this, Estelle couldn’t help smiling and asked, “Maybe the phone call is not about work. Sir, let me see who’s calling first...”
“No. Maybe it’s Tim who called you. Anyway, don’t answer the phone.”
Seeing Mr. Mysterious so childish was rare, and Estelle found it funny.
“Are you jealous?” she asked.
