Chapter 28 “The Veil Between “

Chapter 28 “The Veil Between “

The forest ends where the world itself begins to tear.

It’s not a clearing — it’s a wound. The trees lean away from it as though afraid, their roots curling back into the earth. Mist rolls across the ground in slow, deliberate coils, whispering my name in voices that sound like my own.

The air hums with power, thick and metallic, like the taste of lightning before a storm. The mark on my chest throbs violently. Every pulse feels like it’s dragging something out of me — fear, hope, love — twisting it into fuel.

Liam stands a few paces behind, his voice barely audible through the roar of magic. “Elera, wait.”

But I can’t.

The pull is stronger now — a thread of light binding me to the other side of that rift. My heart knows what my mind refuses to admit: Aiden is there.

I take a step closer. The ground shivers beneath my boots. A thin veil of light stretches before me, rippling like water but sharp as glass. Inside it, shadows move — flickers of movement, faces I almost recognize.

Then I see him.

Aiden.

His form wavers, flickering between wolf and man, every motion heavy with pain. Chains of shadow coil around his wrists, and the air around him burns red. His head lifts — barely — and for a breath, our eyes meet.

My lungs seize.

“Aiden!”

His lips move, but no sound escapes. Still, I feel him. Not through words, but through the mark. It pulses against my skin, desperate, alive.

Behind me, Liam’s hand closes over my arm. “You can’t go through that. Whatever’s inside—”

“I have to,” I whisper.

“Then you’ll die.”

“Then I’ll die trying.”

The words surprise even me. They hang in the air between us, heavy and final. For a moment, I see the hurt in his eyes — not just fear, but longing. A love he’s never spoken aloud, breaking silently.

He releases my arm, jaw tightening. “You’re going to cross anyway, aren’t you?”

I nod. “He’s calling me.”

He shakes his head, frustration and sorrow tangled together. “And if it’s a trick? If it’s the Shadowmother wearing his face again?”

“Then she’ll see what happens when she touches what’s mine.”

The forest shudders — whether from my defiance or her laughter, I can’t tell. The shadows move like a tide, curling around my ankles, whispering lies. He’s gone. He chose her. He forgot you.

I close my eyes, pressing a hand to my mark. “No. I feel him.”

The world narrows. Every sound fades — the rustling trees, Liam’s ragged breathing, even the whispering wind. There is only the Veil, burning before me like a living heartbeat.

And then, I hear her.

The Shadowmother.

Her voice is soft, sweet, filled with venom disguised as honey. “Little flame, you’ve come far. Shall we see what burns brighter — your love, or your will?”

The Veil flares, throwing silver light across the clearing. My knees weaken under the pressure of it, but I hold my ground. “Give him back to me.”

A chuckle echoes, low and distant. “Give him back? Oh, my darling, he never truly left. He is part of me now. Just as you will be.”

I raise my dagger. Its blade catches the Veil’s light, glowing faintly with the runes carved along its edge. I don’t even remember when I etched them — only that the Seer told me they would cut through anything born of shadow.

“If you touch him again,” I say, voice trembling but steady, “I’ll burn your world to ash.”

The mist recoils, hissing. The air grows colder. The Shadowmother’s voice twists, no longer gentle. “Brave words, mortal. Empty, but brave.”

I don’t think — I move.

My mark blazes, and I step forward into the light. Pain sears through me instantly, a scream tearing from my throat as the Veil consumes everything — sight, sound, breath. The world flips inside out. For a heartbeat, I am nothing but fire and will.

Then — silence.

When I open my eyes, I’m standing in a wasteland. The ground is cracked obsidian, the sky a bruise of red and black. And there, in the distance, chained to a pillar of light, is him.

Aiden.

His head lifts weakly, eyes dull at first — then alive when they find me. “Elera…”

I run to him, every step burning. The air thickens around me, heavy with shadow. Shapes rise from the ground — creatures of smoke and bone. Their eyes glow crimson.

I grip my dagger tighter. “Stay back.”

The first lunges — I slash through it, and it dissolves into dust. The second grabs my arm; I twist free, slicing again, again, until I reach him.

He’s bleeding, but real. His hands tremble as he tries to reach me. “You shouldn’t have come.”

I press a palm to his chest, feeling the faint rhythm beneath. “Then you shouldn’t have stayed.”

His lips twitch — half a smile, half a sob. “The bond—she’s trying to break it—”

“She can’t.” I grip his face, forcing him to meet my eyes. “Not while I’m still breathing.”

The Shadowmother’s voice slithers through the air. “Then let’s fix that, shall we?”

The ground quakes. Chains rattle. The light around us flickers. For a moment, I think the world itself will shatter. But instead of fear, I feel something else rise inside me — fierce, unstoppable.

Love.

It burns through my veins like wildfire, searing away the last of the Shadowmother’s illusions. The mark on my chest flares so brightly it blinds me. Aiden gasps, his own mark responding in kind. The chains shatter like glass.

A scream rips through the realm — hers.

The light explodes, swallowing everything — the shadows, the mist, the pain.

When the world settles again, I’m on my knees, Aiden’s arms around me, trembling and real. His breath fans against my hair.

“You found me,” he whispers.

“I told you I would.”

Behind us, the Veil still hums, trembling, waiting. It hasn’t closed yet — it’s watching. Waiting for a price.

And I know it will come.

For love always demands one.
