Chapter 27 “The Shadow’s Test”

Chapter 27 “The Shadow’s Test”

The forest has changed again.
Twisted shapes loom between the trees — impossibly tall, their branches curling like claws. The mist rises thick, heavy with a scent that makes my stomach turn: iron, rot, and something darker I can’t name.

Every step I take, the mark on my chest flares. It pulses, erratic now — once a steady heartbeat, now a drum of warning and fear.

“Liam…” I whisper, gripping his sleeve. He is close, unwavering, but I can feel his tension, taut as a bowstring.

“This is… wrong,” he says. “The forest shouldn’t feel alive.”

“It’s not the forest,” I murmur. “It’s her.”

The Shadowmother. I can feel her presence winding through the trees, her laughter carried on the wind like shards of ice.

And then the visions begin.

Aiden appears before me — or what looks like him. His eyes are full of pain, his face twisted in agony. He reaches for me, but his form flickers, unstable, like smoke caught in a storm.

“Elera…” his voice echoes, soft and pleading.

But behind him, I see another figure — Liam, but not Liam. Shadowed, cruel, eyes glowing red. He’s reaching for me, his expression twisting into malice.

I stumble backward, clutching my mark. “No! Stop!”

The vision shatters, leaving only mist and the sound of my own ragged breath. Liam catches me, steadying me, eyes wide.

“You’re safe,” he says, but the truth of it hangs between us like smoke. Safe from what?

I realize then: the Shadowmother is testing me.
Not just my resolve, but my heart. My loyalty. My love.

“Why me?” I whisper to the empty forest. “Why not him?”

The mist swirls. Her laughter drifts to me, soft, mocking, everywhere and nowhere.

Because little flame, the heart is the battlefield.

A surge of panic overtakes me. I fall to my knees, clutching my mark as it burns like fire. Aiden’s pulse flickers faintly beneath it, weak, distant — but alive.

I close my eyes and focus on him. Not the vision, not the illusions, but him.

He is mine, I tell myself. I will find him. I will not let her take him from me.

The forest seems to exhale. The shadows shift, the mist retreats slightly. The mark pulses calmer. For a moment, I am grounded, tethered.

But the Shadowmother is patient. Her whisper follows me through the trees.

All chains must be tested. All hearts must bend.

And I know the worst is yet to come.

Queen Selara

The throne room is alive with runes that glow faintly in the candlelight. The Seer stands beside me, hands trembling as she assists with the ritual.

“This is dangerous, my Queen,” she says. “The veil is thin, but unstable. To pierce it… you risk everything. Even your life.”

I do not flinch. “I am Aiden’s mother. I will risk anything. Do not speak of my life.”

The Seer bows, her lips pressed tight. “The Blood Moon’s remnants linger in the mortal realm. The Shadowmother watches. If she notices the ritual, she may destroy him before we can reach him.”

I close my eyes, feeling the pulse of his heart through the veil — faint, weak, but defiant. My son.

The magic hums beneath my fingers, ancient and raw. I channel everything: my love, my rage, my grief. Flames of silver and crimson spiral from the Heartstone shards, weaving a bridge between realms.

The Seer warns again. “The gate is forming. Once it opens, there is no turning back. One mistake—”

“I will not fail him,” I hiss.

Lightning cracks across the sky, and I feel the veil stretch. Images flicker through it: a forest, a mortal girl, wolves… and my son, trapped in his new form, eyes glowing red under the moonlight.

A cry tears from my throat, unbidden. “Aiden!”

Somewhere in the distance, I feel it — a vibration, a pulse responding to mine. He knows I am reaching. I do not know if he can move toward me, or if the chains of the Shadowmother’s magic bind him beyond reach.

The Seer grasps my arm. “Queen Selara… the energy is unstable!”

I let go of her hand. “I don’t care. Let the world tremble. I will not leave him behind.”

The veil shimmers violently, light spilling into the chamber. I see him — glimpses only — struggling, torn, fighting some invisible force. My heart breaks at the sight.

And then, as the final strands of magic pull taut, the Shadowmother’s voice cuts through the veil.

You dare touch what belongs to me?

Her tone is silk and steel. The chamber goes cold. Candle flames gutter. The Seer shudders.

I plant my feet firmly. “He is my son! Leave him!”

The Shadowmother’s laugh is low, dreadful. “Mother… mortal… foolish. If you cross me, both will burn.”

I feel the threat, yes, but I feel something else too — the bond still pulsing between my son and the mortal girl, fragile but unbroken.

Little flame, and little wolf… the game begins.

The words echo through my soul.

I clutch the Heartstone shards. “Then let the game begin. But I will reach him first.”

Lightning splits the chamber, running along the runes, flaring them white-hot. My body trembles, but my resolve is absolute. I will reach my son. I will save him. And if the Shadowmother dares stand in my way… she will answer to me.

Elera

I push forward through the forest. The mist curls around my ankles, whispering threats, showing visions meant to break me. Wolves with burning eyes, Liam turned against me, even Aiden himself calling for me to leave him behind.

Each vision strikes like a knife, but my heartbeat — his heartbeat — keeps me grounded.

“I will find you,” I whisper. “No matter what.”

Liam stays close, silent, but I can feel his tension, his unspoken longing pressing against the grief that anchors me to Aiden. He wants to step forward, to take my hand, to fill the void Aiden left behind. But I do not let him.

“Stay behind me,” I murmur, more to myself than him.

The mist thickens, shadows twisting into forms I cannot name. The air tastes of iron. My chest burns. My bond with Aiden flares — bright, desperate — and for the first time, I feel hope ripple through the fear.

Somewhere beyond this forest, beyond the veil, he hears me.

And I will not stop until I reach him.
