Chapter 237 Let him go

Chapter 237 Let him go
CHAPTER 237
Let him go.
ROMAN

It takes me hours to fall asleep, but I do not try to get out of bed. Scarlett holds me tight, clinging to me like an octopus, and I let her. There is no place I’d rather be, anyway, than to be here with her. Eventually, I fall asleep, and brace myself for the worst – for nightmares and to be trapped in bad memories, but nothing happens. For the first time in a month, I fall asleep and actually sleep peacefully.

However, that peace is shattered when I hear her groan.

Immediately, I reach for the gun in the drawer, heart slamming hard against my ribcage.

She rushes out of bed and runs to the bathroom. I stand there, confused, looking around for any intruder, but I find none.

Then, I hear her vomiting. Shit. Morning sickness. I drop the gun and quickly make my way there. She is on her knees, holding on to the toilet bowl, vomiting. She is pale in the face, trembling as she continues. I have never felt as helpless as I do right now. I bend down, pack her hair out of the way. I massage her back softly as she vomits, and clench my jaw hard. All my training and predisposition to violence are useless when it comes to this because all she needs is me.

“It’s alright, baby. I’m sorry.” I kiss her hair, running my hand over her back.

She nods and leans against my legs, panting softly. “Looks like the morning sickness is here to stay.” She sounds so weak, and it makes my chest ache.

“Why don’t I help you shower?” I suggest bending down.

She smiles at me and nods, “Only if you can carry me.”

“Gladly.” I pick her up as if she weighs nothing and lead her to the shower.

First, I help her brush her teeth, then wash her thick hair. I hope our baby has her hair and endless beauty. She leans into me as I take care of her. I am glad to be taking care of her, but I do not like to watch her so weak. I have to get used to it because she is growing a baby in her belly. Our baby. All I can do is support her, be there for her and love her. It will come easy, and I will shove my demons into a deep hole, never to be seen again.

She wears one of my shorts and my tee. It swallows her whole, and I bite my tongue. I hate how much weight she has lost. She needs to get it back.

“Knock, knock. Can we come in?” Eve asks, already in.

“We’re in here.” Scarlett sits up, a big smile on her face.

Eve isn’t alone. She is with Adeline, Luca and Caleb. She’s holding a large platter of food as I instructed, though.

Scarlett glares at me immediately. “I told you I’m not hungry.”

“You’re going to eat either way. Do it the normal way, or I feed you every grain.” I warn, staring at her.

“How … romantic.” Adeline rolls her eyes and pushes me out of the way.

“Why don’t you go check on your stitches or something? I have this handled.” She waves me away.

“I am not going anywhere,” I state cooly.

“You need to check on your stitches,” Luca tells me calmly.

“And she needs to see a doctor. She’s underweight and too weak. She needs to eat, and I need to be here for that.” I argue, glaring at them.

“I’m sure she will be fine. She is not alone, obviously.” Caleb assures me and urges, “Come on, Roman. The doctor is waiting for you.”

I’m about to argue, chest tight, but Scarlett cuts in with a smile, “I’ll be fine, Rome, and I will eat. I just need to sleep. I’ll be waiting right here when you return.”

Reluctantly, I agree. I walk out with the men and make my way to the hospital. The doctor and nurses are waiting for me, and they still look terrified from last night. I have been free of some tension, but I am a little paranoid, counting the space between Scarlett and me, wondering if I’ll be able to reach her if something happens, especially because I know something might happen. My brain has been rewired, and I can’t help but smell trouble every time, even when there is none.

The nurses changed my bandages, and I’m cleared to leave.

“What is this about?” I ask Luca, glancing down the hallways.

“Come to the control room. We need to debrief.” He explains.

I raise my brow, “Shouldn’t Scarlett be there? She’ll be pissed.”

“And you’ll handle her.” Caleb flashes me a grin.

Begrundingly, I follow them to the control room. Mei is there, with her brother. They look so familiar. How didn’t Emiliano know who he was? He was probably caught up in his own greed. Why would he have been corrected when he was making mistakes? Liam and Bastian are by the computers. I walk closer, able to see every inch of the estate from one room.

“You seem better.” Mei nods at me.

“I am. What’s going on?” I go straight to the point.

Bastian spins around in his chair. “We lost Emiliano somewhere in the whole chaos – you stabbed him in his left eye, and he fell from that height, but landed in the pool, which kept him alive long enough for his hired hands to save him before we could finish him up. We have been trying to track him down, to figure out where he might be.”

“And?” I fold my arms, chest tight.

“We have not been able to find something solid, but we are getting close. All our networks are letting us know that he hasn’t left Mexico. He is there, probably hiding and hiding, if not dead. In the next few days, he’ll resurface and try to pull together what used to be his empire, which will be nearly impossible – his soldiers have turned on him, the servants have been freed, and he has nothing, but we have the flashdrive. I think his next course of action will be to make you and Scarlett wanted in America, to frame you for the crimes and just drag you down with him.” He concludes.

“No.” My nose flares, and I shake my head. “Absolutely not. Scarlett has been through enough already, and I am not allowing her past to be dragged through the mud. We have the flash drive. It is gold. It reveals all of his actions, all the things he has done, and covered, the people he was working with and their depravity.”

“So, you think we should go ahead of him? We step in front of the narrative?” Mei frowns.

“If we step in front of the narrative, we’re revealing ourselves too.” Luca points out.

“No, we’d be revealing what was done to us. These bastards trafficked little children and pumped their bellies full of drugs. He needs to die, by my hands, but his organisation needs to be buried forever.” I grit my teeth.

“Now, you’re contradicting yourself.” Jun steps in. “Do you want Emiliano dead? Do you want to pull the trigger, or do you want to step in front of the narrative? If we step in front of the narrative and submit the flash drive to trusted individuals in the M16 and FBI, because he has been operating all over the world, they will want to make a verdict. What if it is not in our favour? What if they let him, or worse, make him rot in some cell? Emiliano needs to die, but we can either do it our way or theirs. That is the only option we have.”
