Chapter 62 What does she really want?
The room fell silent for a while as Dona pressed the wrapped pill into Lucian’s hand, leaving the final decision to him and his mother.
Hazel could tell that Lucian was scared but she also knew this wasn't the time to show she was worried and scared him even more. If they were already coming after him, then it was time for him to get stronger. She brushed his hair gently and gave him a little nod.
“It won’t hurt you Lucian. It’s going to keep you safe”.
Lucian looked from her to Dona, eyes still glossy from tears and fear.
“Will she come again… the girl”?
Hazel was pissed that someone had come and mess with her son's mental health like this but she hid her emotions and just shook her head.
“No, not after this”.
Dona nodded for Lucian to swallow the pill and he looked back at the pill in his hand before bringing it closer to his mouth.
The moment he placed it in his mouth, the pill dissolved into shimmering white dust that coated his tongue. His body tensed immediately, his back arching as though something inside him resisted.
“Lucian”?
Hazel held him, gripping his shoulders firm to stop him from moving.
Dona placed both hands on the boy’s chest and closed her eyes, trying to read exactly what was happening.
“It’s fighting back. The portal is closing, and whatever tried to tie itself to him is trying to keep it open”.
She pushed harder, chanting under her breath.
“Hold him steady”!
Hazel wrapped her arms tightly around him as Lucian trembled uncontrollably. A low growl vibrated through him. It didn't sound childish, or human. It was something old, something ancient, something… demonic.
Then, suddenly, his body relaxed.
The trembling stopped, his breathing steadied, and his eyes fluttered open. Back to its normal blue, soft, scared but no longer possessed eyes.
Hazel felt tears gathering in her eyes as she kissed his forehead.
“It’s done baby, It’s over”.
She helped him lie down properly and covered him up a bit.
Dona exhaled shakily, wiping sweat from her face.
After a while, Lucian fell asleep from the exhaustion and Dona took Hazel to the window side.
“Hazel, it’s not over, it's far from over. As a matter of fact, I fear it's only just beginning. The pill blocked her…”
She looked at Lucian before looking back at Hazel.
“But whatever she wants, she is not done. I think Lucian already has a war ahead of him”.
Of course Hazel had expected that. She could tell just how dangerous that little girl was, so it wouldn't be normal if she just stopped there. But Hazel was more than ready to fight for her son as well.
“She's got some nerves, she came for my son, and threatened to kill all of us”.
She said, her eyes filled with anger but she saw Dona shake her head.
“She didn’t just threaten Hazel, she made a promise”.
Hazel looked away from Dona and into the woods ahead of her with a cold determination in her eyes.
“Then let her come, let all of them come”.
The night air was heavy with the stench of burnt flesh. Outside Devon’s building, Kael stood on the rooftop, eyes wandering into the forest as he looked at the pack that would be crying over their dead in the early hours of tomorrow.
Many knew danger was still around and that's why they hadn't come to claim the bodies yet.
Kael's demon was in rage and was still very present which is why he hadn't left for his pack yet.
Miguel stood beside him, his face, filled with shock and thoughts.
“You knew she came to me.
You already knew she would try to sway me”.
Kael didn’t look at him.
“You’re one of us, I'm not surprised she tried to get to you. Besides, you're my closest friend”.
He said as he finally turned to Miguel.
He looked at him for a while, hoping he wouldn't see any trace of getting betrayed and he didn't, all he could see was shock on his face. But deep inside, Kael hoped it would remain that way as Miguel was more important to him than he could imagine.
Miguel scoffed in annoyance.
“I didn’t think she’d go that far. I thought she just had a screwed up mind. If anything, I only thought she was in love with you. But this…”
Kael’s expression hardened.
“In love with me”?
He asked and Miguel nodded.
“The girl was obsessed with you at some point but she always kept it under the guise of finding your parents killers and protecting the pack”.
Kael sighed, he was tired of being reminded of how he let the enemy get so close.
“She isn’t Cathy, Cathy never existed. What we've been seeing is a mask”.
Kael’s jaw clenched at the thought that he had trusted someone so evil so much.
“She hid in plain sight, worked her way into our lives, gained my trust and then ruined our lives, Hazel’s life… mine”.
Miguel stared, unable to fully grasp it.
“And you just… walked away from her earlier? You let her go”?
Kael closed his eyes for a while before looking forward.
“I didn't spare Hazel, what makes you think I would spare her?
I'm going to make her suffer and watch her die, but not yet.
When she dies, it has to be irreversible, permanent. And Hazel is the only one who can do it”.
Miguel blinked.
“What if she gets this thing first and hurts Hazel"?
Kael didn’t answer immediately. He looked toward the distant mountains where the pack borders glowed faintly with protective sigils, letting everyone know it wasn't safe to be outside as their pack has being infiltrated.
“There is some sort of prophecy”.
He finally said but his eyes opened wide and he looked at Miguel.
“Something is wrong, I can feel it. We need to get back, now!!”
He said before he jumped down from the roof and Miguel followed him immediately.
