Chapter 26 26
Chapter 26 26
Chloe POV
“Father,” I began going on my knees before Alpha Cain, who sat upon his throne. I could feel his icy gaze fixed on me. “I think we should strike now. The witches think we are weak and hesitant, but they are wrong.”
“Yes, you’re right and they’re wrong,” He croaked, leaning back in his seat. His fingers drummed against the armrest, as if he were deep in thought. “I understand your paranoia, daughter, but I believe it’s not yet time.”
I rolled my eyes and nodded, I knew this was going to be his response, ‘wait’ but the question was, what were we waiting for?
I began to rise to my feet but his deep baritone voice stopped me on my way to the door. “Child!”
I stopped in my tracks, turning slowly, a sly smile on my face.
He clasped the pendant of the moon on his necklace for a long time before clearing his throat.
“There are some things you cannot understand, but soon you will.”
“Enlighten me, father!”
“The moon goddess will send us a sign, I believe that storm was a warning, she’s never failed us, now is not the time to doubt her, we just need to wait.”
Finally, the dam broke and my anger broke free too.
“I’m sorry if I don’t believe in her enough, she’s just a god, but we should be accountable and in control because this is all for the protection of the pack!” I bellowed.
“I feel your pain daughter, I know you could win, but I won’t make a mistake that could take your life, I already lost my first daughter, Juanita ,to the hands of a human, I don’t intend on losing you to the witches, after all, you’re my future heir.”
“Heir?” I repeated, the word jolted something inside of me. I’d never expected him to call me heir one day, after all, I was nothing but a hopeless girl he saved from an accident, and I didn’t deserve this title.
“No, your daughter is still out there, as for me, I just want to keep fighting for this pack, and no one can kill me, they’ve tried once and they failed, woefully.”
Alpha Cain snickered as he rose from his iron throne, he stood a few feet from me, a smile playing on his face.
“You need to get some rest, my child, your strength will be useless if it burns too soon.”
“What happens to the little girl we imprisoned?”
“I set her free, she’s just a child, I sent her back to her kingdom, her mother's death would serve as a warning to the others who try to violate or challenge the Blueblood Territory.”
My lips turned up. That was the only decision he made that sat well with me. He patted my shoulder walking past me without saying anything.
The sun was up the next morning and I was already sharpening my sword at the training yard.
The dark blue under suit clung to my skin like second skin, it was my best outfit to wear anytime I needed to train.
I caught sight of Antonio standing at the corner of the room speaking to the other guards, he was dressed in a black tunic tucked into rough leather trousers.
As soon as he saw me, his lips turned up, he twirled his sword playfully, “Good morning, princess, ready to lose to me?”
I smirked, and immediately struck my sword against his. I winked at him before twisting and hitting his ankle, which sent him tumbling onto the ground as he yelped in pain.
“Damn, who annoyed you this morning?” He grimaced, still lying on his back.
“I just want to fight someone so bad, that’s all,” I offered him a hand and he accepted but instantly attempted to strike me, I dodged and smiled. “Do not bite the hands that feed you.”
“I don’t bite, I fight.”
“And I win,” I said, sending him to the ground for the second time in seconds.
“Do you ever let anyone win?”
I hit him with the sword handle and he yelped in pain, “Would you let me win?”
A scoff rolled off his lips as he managed to stand to his feet. “What’s going on? You’ve been brooding all morning. For the second time, who annoyed you?”
“No one, in particular,” I mumbled, wiping the beads of sweat from my forehead. It took every ounce of self-control not to blurt out that my Alpha Cain was driving me insane, he kept insisting on our waiting, for almost a month, we waited when we could have been done with the battle already; knowing fully well how I hated waiting.
My blood simmered for war, and until blood was spilled, I knew I would never find rest.
“Thirsty?” Antonio asked hurling the bottle of ale my way, I took a sip, feeling the burn of the liquid spreading through my throat. Damn, that was the relief I needed.
“Seems you have a guest!” Antonio voiced out, peering out the open window, I leaned close squinting my eyes. Outside, I saw men in horses, their faces covered with helmets, as they galloped across the courtyard.
One of them removed the helmet and my heart skipped a beat, my wolf went wild a little, Henry Sanders.
“What the hell is he doing here? I thought the battle was on hold.” I thought aloud.
“I guess we’d never know until we find out.” He chimes in.
Before I could utter another word, a guard had walked into the training room, bowing curtly. “My lady, the king, Alpha Cain, requests to see you in the court, he says it’s important and you must come at once.”
An impatient and angry smile played on my lips and I turned to face Antonio who was also brooding on my behalf. “ Do you want me to accompany you?”
“No, I’d be just fine.”
I arrived at the court within ten minutes as expected. Henry stood close to Alpha Cain, his usual smile plastered across his too handsome face, instantly, something shifted inside of me, my wolf, was drawn to him.
I tried to calm my wolf but it just wouldn’t cooperate, it was as though little me had just seen her long-lost doll, I swallowed, trying hard to hide the nervousness that I was feeling.
I severed that bond we shared, so whatever this was, it was false and deceiving.
“Daughter! Thank you for joining us, Alpha Henry here, has something important to share, we all know how helpful he’s been these past few weeks, let’s listen to what he has to say !" Alpha Cain cheered as soon as he sighted me.
I crossed my arms around my chest, meeting Henry’s dreamy and lustful gaze. “And what do you have to say?”
He snickered, facing the crowds as though this were some casual reunion between old lovers, “I’ve pledged my allegiance to the Blueblood, the best of my men would fight for Alpha Cain’s cause as promised, but…” his pause, facing me, his smile fading off. “You haven’t kept the end of the bargain.”
“Which is?” I asked coldly.
“You haven’t responded to my proposal!” He said, confidently.
I looked away for a moment trying to calm the uproar of anger inside of me.
“After all, we are fated mates!” He added, these words instantly made me melt with anger.
“We aren’t, you were fated to Laura, I’m Chloe blueblood now,” I affirmed.
“No, I thought you were dead, even though something inside of me still felt connected to you, now that I learned you survived that accident? The car accident? It was fate.” He sounded like an obsessed maniac at this point.
He continued, “Yes, I married your twin, but that was my biggest mistake, and even if you moved to the end of the country, away from me? Our souls are still connected, I miss when we used to drive around town, no woman can ever feel like you.”
“That’s enough,” I finally yelled.
Silence descended on the room and I took my first step towards him, with a very swift movement I drew my sword pressing it against his throat, everyone gasped even Alpha Cain appeared shocked by my actions.
Henry's eyes widened in fright, I’m sure he never saw this coming. “Don’t do this, please.”
I smiled, “I can do what I want, Henry, you think because the moon goddess tied our souls together, you own me?”
He didn’t respond, he was too shocked to.
“I thought you liked me but you were only using me, you took Lacey’s side and rejected me, that broke me, Henry,” I said as tears blurred my vision but I pushed them back. “News flash, you’re stuck with her.”
“No, Chloe…”
I pushed the blade a little bit deeper into his skin and blood trickled down his neck.
All of a sudden, I turned the sword towards myself, my belly, and a smile played on my lips.
“I’d rather end my life,” I purred, “Than accept your stupid proposal!”
