Chapter 105

As soon as the doctor comes into the room, Luis starts asking questions. “Doctor what’s going on? Why is she in so much pain now?”

“I’m not sure yet Jefe. Please let me examine her. Would you help me take off her shirt so I can look at her wounds?”

Luis nods and helps the doctor take off Veronica’s shirt. The doctor removes the bandages to examine the wounds themselves to make sure there is no infection. “All the wounds look good. I don’t see any infection.”

Just then Veronica screams in pain as she doubles over clutching her stomach.

“There’s something else going on. We need to get her to the hospital to see if we can figure it out soon. I am going to give her a pain shot so we can transport her without her being in so much pain.”

Luis doesn’t say anything, he just nods in understanding. The doctor gives her a shot and Luis scoops her up just as she passes out from the pain. Octavio and Gloria come running in followed by Christopher and Tiffany.

“What’s going on? Where are you taking mama?” Octavio asks through a shaky voice.

“We’re taking her to the hospital.” The doctor says. Luis is so focused on Veronica that he is not paying attention to anything other than getting her to the hospital.

They all run after Luis as they head out to the awaiting car. Christopher and Tiffany follow in their vehicle.

Once they get to the hospital the doctor directs Luis where to take Veronica. They right away do an ultrasound to see if there is an issue with her gallbladder.

The doctor gasps and runs out of the room. “Nurse get an operating room set up now. I am moving her now.”

“Yes doctor.” The nurse says as she runs down the hallway.

“Jefe. I have to take her now. Her gallbladder has ruptured and it looks like their might be some internal bleeding.”

“You better save her.” Luis says coldly.

“I will. She will be okay. I promise.” The doctor says with a head nod.

Luis nods and kisses Veronica’s forehead. “I’ll be here waiting my love.”

The doctor quickly pushes her bed down the hallway to the operating room.

Octavio and Gloria pull Luis into a hug. Soon Christopher and Tiffany show up and see them hugging Luis so he hugs them all as well.

“She’ll be okay dad. She’s super strong.”

“I know but she’s already knocked down from the rest of her injuries. I’m just so worried this time.”

“Luis look at me please.” Christopher says sternly.

Luis slowly lifts his head to reveal his tear-stained face.

“She will be okay. The only reason this is happening is because of the other injuries. She will pull through. Besides would you think that she would ever let something like this take her down?” He says with a chuckle.

Luis laughs and says, “Yeah you’re right. No way would she let something like this take her down.”

They all chuckle a little bit and settle into chairs to wait for the doctor.

After about five hours the doctor comes out to update Luis. “Jefe. The surgery went well. We were able to remove her gallbladder and repair the damage. It wasn’t as bad as it looked on the scan so that’s good. She’ll be awake soon and then you all can see her once we get her into her room. She will need to stay here overnight though.”

Luis launches himself at the doctor and hugs him. “Sorry I couldn’t help myself. Thank you.”

“Not a problem Jefe. She’ll be okay.”

Luis nods and let’s go of the doctor. The doctor heads back into the operating room to finish getting Veronica ready to get her to her room.

Luis turns around to Octavio and hugs him and Gloria.

“You all should go meet Gloria’s family now. We know your mama will be okay.”

“Are you sure dad? We don’t have to go.”

“No. I want you to go and your mother would want you to as well. Go and have fun. Let us know what you want for your wedding and we will make it happen.” Luis says as he puts his hand on Octavio’s cheek. “Really go.”

They hug Luis again and then say their goodbyes before heading to the restaurant to meet Gloria’s parents. Since its now closer to mid-afternoon, they are all starving anyway.

After they leave, Luis smiles to himself that Veronica is okay and will be okay. He turns around when he hears commotion behind him to see them pushing Veronica’s bed back down the hallway to him.

She is awake and smiling at him.

“Baby. I was so worried.”

“No need to be worried. I’m here and I’m not going anywhere.”

Luis smiles at her and moves out of the way so the nurses can get her bed back into the room. He notices that she is in a wider bed than before.

Once they have her bed settled the nurses make sure her IV and pain meds are set up correctly and then leave them alone.

“Come cuddle me please.” Veronica pleads in a weak voice.

Luis smiles and carefully climbs into the bed on her right side. “I love you my queen.”

“And I love you my king.”

It doesn’t take long for Veronica to fall asleep. Luis holds her carefully and caresses her hair while she sleeps. He is so overwhelmed with everything that has happened lately that he just wants to stay in that bed wrapped around Veronica forever.
