Chapter 184 What Was Always Ours

Chapter 184 What Was Always Ours
Ivy POV

The Moon Goddess looked at me for a long moment after I made my wish. Neither of us spoke. The white tree above us shimmered softly.

Silver leaves drifted from its branches and settled on the water without sinking. Rings spread across the surface before fading into the stillness.

A small smile touched her lips."You already knew your answer before you came here."

I looked down at my hands."I think I did."

She stepped closer until we stood beneath the branches together. "Tell me why."

The question caught me off guard.

"I've lost people I loved. I've carried power I never wanted. I've spent months trying to save a world that was falling apart." I drew a slow breath. "None of those things are what I miss the most."

My voice grew quieter."I miss him."

The words felt simple. Honest."I miss knowing he's there. I miss waking up and feeling him. I miss the quiet comfort that never needed words."

The Moon Goddess nodded."You are not asking for power."

"No."

"You are not asking for the past to return."

"No."

"You are asking for someone."

"Yes."

A gentle warmth settled over the water.

"Then your heart has finally become lighter than the burden you carried."

For the first time, I understood what she meant. Months ago, I would have wished for different things. I would have asked for my mother back.

I would have asked for every life that had been lost. I would have asked for every mistake to disappear. Now I knew those wishes belonged to grief.

This one belonged to hope. The Moon Goddess looked toward the glowing tree.
"Many wolves misunderstand the mate bond."

I listened.

"They believe it creates love." She smiled softly."It never has."

Her hand brushed across one of the silver leaves."Love begins with choice. Every day two people decide to remain beside one another. They forgive. They trust. They stay. The bond was never meant to replace those choices. It only reflects them."

Her eyes returned to mine.

"When your bond disappeared, did Caden leave?"

I shook my head."No."

"Did you?"

"No."

"You both stayed."

Images filled my mind. Caden refusing to leave me in the sanctuary. Standing beside me when every Alpha questioned us.

Holding my hand when the bond gave us nothing in return. Choosing me over and over again. The Moon Goddess smiled as if she had seen every memory.

"You proved something that many wolves never understand."

"What?"

"That your love never depended on fate."

Tears burned behind my eyes.

"The bond didn't keep you together." She placed a hand over my heart."You kept each other together."

Something inside me loosened. For months I had mourned what we had lost.
Now I realized we had never truly lost the most important part. The bond had been silent. Our love had never been.

"The Keeper carried the weight of every wolf," the Moon Goddess continued. "There was no room left for anything else. That burden stood between your souls, not because love failed, but because duty demanded everything you had."

Her voice grew quieter."The Keeper has finished her journey." She smiled."Only Ivy remains."

Warmth spread through my chest. Not suddenly. Slowly. Like sunlight reaching a room after a long winter. The Moon Goddess lifted her hand.

"You do not need my permission to love him." Silver light gathered around her fingers."You only needed to become yourself again."

She touched the center of my chest. The world fell silent. Warmth rushed through me, gentle enough to make me catch my breath. It spread from my heart into every part of my body, filling places I hadn't realized still felt empty.

Then I felt it. Not the warmth. Him. Caden.
The connection returned so naturally that for one impossible second, I forgot it had ever been gone.

His heartbeat brushed against mine. His worry. His hope. The quiet patience he had carried while waiting for me. His love reached me before any words could.

A sob escaped my throat. I pressed a hand against my chest as tears spilled down my face. The silence that had lived inside me since the tomb was gone.

The empty space had closed. I wasn't alone anymore. Far away, I felt Caden's surprise. Then relief. So much relief that it stole my own breath.

His joy rushed through the bond, bright and overwhelming. He could feel me too.
The Moon Goddess stepped back, leaving me to the moment.

I laughed through my tears."He's awake."

She nodded.

"He felt you the same moment you felt him."

I closed my eyes. Across the bond I felt him searching for me. Not with panic. With certainty. He knew where I was. He knew I was coming home.

The Moon Goddess waited until I opened my eyes again.

"One last question?"

I nodded.

"Will I ever see you again?"

She smiled, and for a moment she looked less like a goddess and more like someone saying goodbye to a daughter.

"I hope not."

I blinked. Her smile widened."If we meet again, let it be because your life has reached its natural end, not because the world needs saving."

She rested her hand lightly against my forehead."Go live the ordinary life you fought so hard to protect."

The white tree shimmered. Silver leaves lifted into the air. The light around us grew brighter until the tree, the water, and the endless mist faded together. The last thing I heard was her voice.

"Go home, Ivy."

Morning light warmed my face. My eyes opened slowly. The ceiling above me came into focus. The room was quiet. For one brief moment I wondered if everything had been a dream.

Then the bond pulsed gently inside my chest. Real. Alive. Whole. I turned toward the window. Caden was already looking at me.

He had been sitting beside the bed, waiting. The instant our eyes met, I felt his breath catch through the bond. Neither of us moved. Neither of us needed to ask.

He knew. Tears filled his eyes. Mine answered with their own. He crossed the room in three quick steps before stopping in front of me, almost afraid to touch me.

"It's back."

My voice broke as I smiled. "I know."

His hand found mine. The bond surged between us, warm and steady, carrying every feeling neither of us could put into words.

He let out a shaky laugh before pulling me into his arms. This time there was nothing missing. Nothing standing between us. I buried my face against his shoulder and felt the quiet rhythm of his heart.

It wasn't the magic that made the moment feel complete. It was the certainty that, even without it, we would have found our way back to each other.

The bond was never the beginning of our story. It was simply returning to where it had always belonged.
