Chapter 183 The Last Gift

Chapter 183 The Last Gift
Ivy POV

I followed the path of light across the still water. The silver mist slowly disappeared behind me. Each step carried me farther from everything I had said goodbye to. My mother. Vuk. Veyra. The burdens I had carried. The life I had lived as the Keeper.

Ahead, a lone white tree stood in the middle of the endless water. Its roots disappeared beneath the surface, though there was no soil to hold them.

Its branches stretched toward a sky without a sun, and its silver leaves shimmered with a quiet light that soothed something deep inside me. Beneath the tree sat the Moon Goddess.

She wasn't surrounded by power. She wasn't sitting on a throne. She looked almost ordinary. When she saw me, she smiled.

"I've been waiting."

A smile found its way onto my face."I know."

For the first time since meeting her, I didn't bow. I walked to the tree and sat beside her. The water remained perfectly still beneath us. The branches swayed gently above our heads, though there wasn't a breath of wind.

Nothing disturbed the silence, yet it never felt empty. It felt like coming home. We sat together for a long time without speaking.
I realized I wasn't uncomfortable.

For so much of my life, silence had meant waiting for something bad to happen. Waiting for an argument. Waiting for another fight. Waiting for another impossible choice.

This silence carried none of those things. It simply existed. The Moon Goddess finally turned toward me."Who are you?"

The answer almost came without thinking.

"I'm Ivy." I stopped. "I'm the Keeper."

The words left my mouth before I could stop them. Then they felt wrong. I looked down at my hands and slowly shook my head.

"No."

She didn't interrupt. She simply waited. I took a slow breath.

"I'm just Ivy."

The Moon Goddess smiled."Exactly."

Something inside me settled. For so long, I had measured myself by what I carried.
The Founding Line. The Keeper. The girl chosen to save the wolf world.

Those titles had become so much a part of me that I no longer knew where they ended and I began. The Moon Goddess looked toward the endless water.

"This was always the final lesson."

Her voice was quiet.

"Not how to lead. Not how to fight. Not how to change history." She looked back at me."It was learning who you are after the world no longer needs saving."

I let those words sink in. For months, every decision I made had been about someone else. Every step. Every sacrifice. Every battle.

Now there was nothing left to fight. The thought should have frightened me. Instead, it filled me with peace. The Moon Goddess reached for the key resting in my hand.

The silver metal glowed softly. The light spread across my fingers before fading away completely. The key became cold.
Ordinary. Its purpose had ended.

"The Keepers began because the world needed them," she said.

She gently closed my fingers around it. "The world no longer does."

At that same moment, warmth spread across my back. The mark. I felt it disappear. There was no pain. No burst of light. No dramatic farewell. It simply... let go.

A breath escaped my lips before I realized I had been holding it. The weight that had followed me since my mother's journal...
Since the sanctuary… and since the night everything changed…

I stood a little straighter. My chest felt lighter. My heart felt quieter. The Moon Goddess rested her hand against my forehead.

"You carried your duty with honor." Her touch was gentle."Now lay it down."

Tears blurred my vision. Not because I was losing something. Because I finally understood I didn't have to carry it anymore.

For the first time in my life, I belonged only to myself. No prophecy claimed me. No ancient promise defined me. I was simply Ivy.

Nothing more. Nothing less. And somehow… That felt like enough. The Moon Goddess stood up. She looked at me with the warmth of someone who had watched every step of my journey.

"I cannot erase every scar." She smiled gently."I cannot return every life that was lost."

I thought of everyone we had buried. Everyone who had never made it to this moment. She continued."I cannot change the choices that shaped you."

A soft glow gathered around her hand."But I can thank you."

I looked at her.

"For everything you gave..." She held out her hand."I offer you one gift."

My breath caught.

"One wish."

The words echoed through the quiet. No conditions. No price. No sacrifice. For a moment, I couldn't think. My mind drifted through everything that had brought me here.

My mother. Blackwood. Caden. Lucas.
Maya. Sera. The council. The Charter. The wolves rebuilding their lives. Then my thoughts wandered even farther back.

The frightened university student who had stumbled into a world she never knew existed. The girl who had wanted nothing more than to finish university and live an ordinary life.

I smiled. She had survived. I was still her.
The Moon Goddess watched me quietly.

"What do you want?"

The question should have been difficult.
Instead, it felt surprisingly simple. I thought about power. I didn't want it. I thought about becoming Keeper again.

Never.

I thought about changing the past. Bringing people back. Undoing every painful memory. For a moment, the temptation was there.

If I could see my mother again… If I could erase every loss… My heart ached. But those lives had shaped the people who remained.

Taking away pain would also take away everything we had learned because of it.
Slowly, I let those thoughts go.There was only one thing left.

One absence I still felt every day. The Moon Goddess seemed to know."Do you have your answer?"

I closed my eyes. Immediately, I felt him.
Not the bond. The memory of it. The certainty that had once lived between us.
The quiet comfort of knowing he was there, even when he wasn't beside me.

The silence left behind after losing it. I opened my eyes.

"Yes."

The Moon Goddess smiled."I thought you would." She extended her hand toward me."Then tell me."

I drew in a slow breath. The words waited at the edge of my lips. The bond. The one I had lost inside the tomb. The one that had connected me to Caden. The one I still reached for without thinking.

Just before I spoke, one last question crossed my mind. I looked at her.

"Will it change me?"

She shook her head."It will not make you someone new." Her smile was warm."It will simply restore what was always meant to be yours."

A smile spread across my face. My heart felt lighter than it had in years. I looked into the eyes of the Moon Goddess. Then, without another moment of doubt, I made my wish.

"I want the bond back."

The Moon Goddess smiled as the silver leaves above us began to glow.
