Chapter thirty eight
Chapter thirty eight
"What else?" I asked when she kept quiet for too long.
She shrugged. "That's pretty much it. Oh, we can also heal very fast."
"What about sunlight? Can you go out during the day?"
She turned to me, raising a brow. "Did Drew go outside during the day?"
I nodded. "So sunlight doesn't affect you?"
"It does, but not too much. It's uncomfortable, but we won't die from it. Any more questions, darling?"
"Stop calling me that," I snapped, suddenly irritated.
"What? Darling?" I nodded. She laughed. "Oh, darling. Get used to it. Please learn to mind your tone too. Remember, my Coven is very overprotective."
I gritted my teeth, stopping myself from saying anything that would offend her.
She seemed satisfied with my silence. During the drive, she told me about her Coven, and how everyone was like.
They had forty members. They lived in a mansion that housed them all. Her parents were still alive, but they were not living at the Coven House. Since they relinquished the title to her, they've been travelling all over the world, never staying in one place for long.
She then told me about her Beloved, Mark. He was a very vicious vampire, strong-willed and very overprotective of her. He came from Drew's Coven. That's why she knew most about the Harimots.
She said if I was a good guest, I might even ask Mark anything I wanted about Drew and his family. Only if I was well behaved.
I rolled my eyes at that, which she laughed at.
Given the circumstances I found myself in, I think I was managing. I was doing pretty good. I had a level head, Drew and I were no longer married, I had Marianne. I had a safe place to go to, as safe as living with vampires was going to be.
I was proud of myself that I had not broken down or gone mad already. I was doing well given the circumstances.
When we pulled into her territory, it was still dark outside. It was around one in the morning. It took us about six hours to arrive at her Coven.
The lights were not enough to illuminate the mansion, but I could see it was huge. It was three stories high. At the door, there was a man standing there, arms crossed.
"That's Mark," she told me, opening the door. I quickly opened mine too, then went into the backseat to take out my bags.
When I looked back at the door, Marianne and Mark were hugging each other tightly, talking quietly.
I headed towards them, a bit apprehensive about the whole thing. It was overwhelming to know that the house was full of vampires who would love to take a bite out of me.
Mark chuckled, talking loudly as if he wanted me to hear him. "He's a funny one. As if we would drink contaminated blood."
I stopped in my tracks, trying to ascertain the meaning of contaminated. I was clean. I didn't have any diseases.
"He meant Drew, Leon. Your blood reeks of Drew. It's rare, but some vampires can poison someone's blood so that others can stay away. Somehow, Drew poisoned yours."
I panicked a little, trying to understand how he poisoned my blood.
"Come in, Leon. Before you burst that head of yours."
I followed them inside, behind them. Mark was very tall, almost taller than me.
He turned around, and extended his arm for a handshake. I put my bag on the floor, then shook his hand.
"I'm Mark. Nice to meet you, Leon. Heard a lot of things about you," he grumbled out.
I raised my brow at Marianne, who just twirled a lock of her hair and grinned.
"Nice to meet you too, Mark."
I followed them into the House. We went to the elevator, then Marianne pressed the third floor. The ride was quiet. I felt like the two were communicating telepathically.
I followed them out of the elevator. We passed a lot of rooms on the third floor. Marianne explained to me that the most important people in the Coven stayed on the third floor. Their rooms were there, their second in command, third and forth. Her parents' room was also there. Then there were four more empty rooms in case they had important guests, like me. I rolled my eyes at that.
They showed me where their room was. She said if I needed anything, I'm welcome to knock at their door. She said she will introduce me to everyone tomorrow. Even though they didn't sleep, or rather didn't need fo sleep, they did indulge in sleep. It was easier to pretend to be human by doing all fhe human activities.
They showed me my room. It was very spacious, the size of my bedroom back at my apartment. The king sized bed was in the middle of the room, the wardrobe just opposite the bed. There was a dressing table, a study table and a couch just next to the ceiling to the floor window.
"Thank you for everything you've done for me thus far, Marianne. If it wasn't for you, I'm sure I'd be dead by now," I said, laughing at the last part of my sentence.
She just smiled sadly, pitying me. I usually hated pity, but this time, I did need it. I was all alone. I didn't have anyone. My parents and I kept in touch, but we were not that close. Drew wouldn't hurt them, would he?
I was not sure anymore. When Marianne and Mark left, I planned to call my parents.
"Don't worry, Leon. I'm sure your parents are alright. I can always send someone to check on them. Should I?" Marianne asked. I assumed she read my mind.
I sighed, sitting down on the couch, holding my head with my hands. "It's fine, thank you Marianne. I'll just call them."
She nodded. "We will leave you to unpack. Our door is always open for you."
Words were not enough to thank Marianne for all she had done for me. Hopefully she could tell how grateful I was for her.
