Chapter 80 Talk Of Marriage
Romeo coughed, choking on his meal. He reached for his glass and took a generous sip from it and returned the glass to the table. "I'm sorry, you caught me off guard." Clearing his throat, he continued, "I'm... confused. Are you asking me to marry you or are you curious to know if I want to marry you?"
"I..." she chuckled softly. "Sorry, I don't– I don't even know where that came from. It's just... I have been thinking– a lot actually about our... future together. I mean, I don't–" she paused, smacking her lips together then scratching her head confusedly. "I mean I don't know what will happen to us and I think I am scared of getting married." She finally confessed.
Romeo squinted, staring into her confused eyes. He reached out and touched the hand of the woman sitting opposite him and smiled. "So this is what that was about..." he softly said.
She looked confusedly into his emerald eyes. "What what is about?" Her thin and perfectly shaped brow twitched.
He drew his hand back and rose to his feet. Walking over to her, he pulled out the chair next to her and sat down with a soft sigh. "When we were together on our ice cream date, your expression changed when I said something. Now I knew it's something I said but I just didn't know what. But you were scared when I said I'd tell you who my crush is on our wedding day."
There wasn't a hint of anger in his voice as he spoke, rather, he spoke to her like an understanding father would do to his troubled daughter. "Now tell me," his voice was almost like a whisper, "what makes you scared? Are things not the way you thought it would be with me?"
He didn't want to ask that question, afraid of what her answer might be. But what really mattered most to him was her happiness and he would do whatever it took to see her smile.
She shook her head and sharply responded. "No! Trust me, it's not that! Things are far more better than I fantasized about."
There was a hint of relief in his magical eyes and his seductive lips curved into a smile. He took her hands once more, this time holding both in his and asked. "Then what is it?"
She breathed out heavily, trying to relieve herself of the heaviness in her heart. "Well... I loved Chris too when we were dating, he was everything to me,"
Romeo arched his brow at her and she couldn't help but to chuckle. "Was," she stated, "past tense Romeo." He nodded his head and she continued. "When we were together, I thought things would never end, I believed so blindly that we would never let go of each other.
So I endured insults from his family and did my best to please his friends. But look at what has come of it, a terrible divorce with nothing to attain for." Her forehead creased and she pouted sadly.
Romeo leaned in and kissed her cheek. "I am..." he squinted, thinking of the word he wanted to use then said; "disappointed."
Cara's eyes grew wide and her face turned pale with confusion. "Huh?"
He leaned back into his seat and stared into her eyes. "Chris is a heartless jerk, we might both be men but there are differences between us." He sat up straight suddenly, "I would never even think about cheating on you with a stranger, not to even think about your friend. I have met you and I love you for who you are regardless of what you or anyone thinks.
"I don't just love you, I crave you, I want you, I need you!" He recited, emphasis on the "need".
Cara felt tears build up in her eyes. "I'm just afraid because I am a broken woman." She averted her gaze and stared at the table instead. She felt his warm hands cup her face and tears trailed down her cheek.
"You're not broken." His voice was soft, filled with pain and love at the same time. "I am the broken one and only you can fix me." He wiped her tears away, "I have died," he leaned in closer and placed a kiss on one of her eyes, "everyday," he kissed the other one, "waiting for you."
Placing a kiss on her cheek, "I don't want you to be afraid," he kisses the other side. "Because I don't plan on leaving you any time soon." He held her chin and raised her head to look into his eyes. "I am going to spend the rest of my life with you whether you want it or not," he said with a smile on his face. "The only problem is, I am afraid eternity won't be enough time for me to love you."
She looked into his eyes, finding it impossible that such a man existed and he didn't exist alone, he was hers. Hers for the keep. He belonged to her and her to him.
Could someone please pinch her awake? Why was she allowed to have such a dream? If it was really a dream then she never wanted to wake up.
A smile tugged at her lips and she cupped his face and pulled him in for a kiss. More of a peck. "Thank you..." she muttered against his face and he pulled her to his chest for a warm embrace.
She stayed there, listening to the ever calm beating of his heart, hoping and praying that he wouldn't have to leave but the night grew older and older.
The time had come for them to say goodnight but surprisingly, Romeo called his driver and instructed him to head home and return the next day with a change of clothes for him.
Cara blinked. "You're not leaving?"
"Do you want me to leave?" He arched his brow.
She shook her head while smiling sheepishly. Before she even realized it, he swept her off her feet and carried her to her bedroom, their harmonious laughter echoing in the hallway.
