Chapter 41 Hope For A Change
Anger, frustration, anxiety, everything mixed together and coursed through Jessica's veins. Her head was about to explode from thinking out loud. Some people even thought she was crazy and maybe was! She just didn't notice it yet.
"But... At least I still have some sort of control over him." She ended her loud thought with that.
If she could yell at him to take care of their child and he listened then she could yell at him to make him come back to his senses and hopefully he would listen.
Arriving at the house, she gave a gentle smile and a small nod of her head to Michael and Sarah Knowles while passing by.
It wasn't like they cared or noticed but it was better for her to show her respect and be ignored than to not show it and be interrogated like a criminal caught at a crime scene.
"I have to admit, I am pretty impressed with yo--" she froze, looking around her baby's room. "Chris?" He was no where to be found. "Chris!"
She growled underneath her breath. Turning around, she dashed down the hall towards his room and twisted the knob open. "Five minutes Chris and you cannot even... Stay by your own kid..." The latter left her mouth in a mutter as she stumbled upon an empty room.
"Chris? Are you in the bathroom? Did you need a bathroom break?" She walked fully into his room to check his bathroom and toilet but he wasn't there.
It finally dawned upon her that he might have gone out. She remembered the call she walked in on him having, one with his girlfriend... As much as it irked her to say the word girlfriend relating to her own husband.
Since she knew his favorite locations, she wasn't going to let this one slide, she had made up her mind not to let any of his foolish behaviors slide ever again.
Turning around to leave his room, her eyes widened as they landed on a woman standing by the door.
"Why do you keep on shouting my son's name when he isn't home?" Sarah frowned as she questioned.
"Uh... He was... He was home when I left to buy a few supplies... He was watching our son." Jessica hesitantly said. It suddenly dawned upon her that she could report the promiscuous son to his strict mother! Maybe then something would really change.
"Look, my son isn't a nanny and you shouldn't try to tie him down with such absurd duties. Where have you ever heard of a man being the one at home taking care of the child?" Her voice was thin and soft yet very authoritative.
Jessica smiled softly. "Yes mum but I... I did it for a reason. I didn't know how to say this to you but... Your son has been cheating recently, he has had several affairs just under the rate of one year! He wasn't like that when we got married so I don't know what to do. I thought you might."
Sarah looked taken aback at first, it was obvious in her expression that she had never expected such a complaint about Chris but it only lasted a few seconds.
"Can you really blame him?" Sarah's soft voice caught Jessica's ears.
Jessica stared confusedly at her mother in-law, what kind of response was that?! "What... What do you mean by that?"
"Oh well my son was never a promiscuous person, he didn't even have the mind to do it. But then he met you and you taught him something you have come to regret. The student has surpassed the teacher." Sarah smiled.
"What no! No this isn't... This isn't--"
"I heard how you two met, the unfortunate tale of how my son's life was ruined no doubt. You crawled into his life while he was still married to Cara. You made him think that it was okay for a married man to cheat and he did.
"Now, he is doing it again. You see that's the thing about my son, he never forgets. As long as the message hits the right spot."
"Mrs Knowles!" Jessica lashed out. Sarah's eyes widened in surprise at her manner of speech yet Jessica kept going. "This is a very wrong thing for you to say! Your son and I only started dating because we loved each other and we are a married couple now because we still do!"
"Sure," Sarah plainly responded. "Let's say he does love you which even a blind man can see to be false. Hypothetically, let's say he loves you, didn't you realize that he loved Cara too when the two of you started hooking up?"
"Why are you saying these things instead of picking up your phone and calling him over right now!" Jessica couldn't hide her frustration. "He is out cheating right now!"
"As you have taught him to! You taught a kid to smoke and you are mad he is smoking, what exactly do you want?" Sarah's thin brow arched as she asked.
"I want my husband back."
"Okay then, when Cara gets her husband back, then so will you." Sarah smiled tauntingly, knowing well that it could never happen.
Tears pricked at Jessica's eyes where she stood. She couldn't believe the words her pricked ears were listening to. "I'm not going to take this." She declared. "This is bullshit and I am not going to take it! I am going out there now to scold him back into his senses if I have to."
"Listen up lover girl," Sarah's tone became strict. A deep frown sat on her face. "You want to play the victim here? Sure, go along, play pretend for as long as you like. But don't you dare think you can place a leash around my son's neck.
"If you attempt it, I will turn you into an actual dog! Chris is young and wishes to explore his sexual life and I'm not gonna stand against that just because you wish to play the victim!" Her words were like a whip against Jessica's back.
Tears trailed down Jessica's face where she stood. She watched Sarah turn to leave but the woman stopped and gave her a once over.
"Maybe this time he'll bring home a better wife for once." She snickered before leaving.
Jessica broke into tears.
