Chapter 144 How It All Started

Chapter 144 How It All Started
Jessica sat there, watching Cara leave the place. She had never felt like a bigger fool. "How am i supposed to stand up to him when he threatens to reveal the truth about Jeremy to the world?" Tears stung at her eyes.

She could not help but to wonder, why were things not going her way at all these days? Her husband had filed for a secret divorce, her son's real father had emerged and threatened to reveal the truth, she had lost her job and now she was on the verge of losing everything.

"Why the fck am I stuck in such a level?!" She spat out angrily.

"Mummy," Jeremy called her name softly. "My hand." He raised his tiny hand to her face, ice cream had stained his little palm.

She had totally forgotten that her son was on her lap. She immediately wiped her tears, "huh? Oh!" A soft chuckle left her mouth. "You are so clumsy. Let mummy feed you, you still insist on feeding yourself, now look."

"Mmn mmn," he shook his head. "I feed myself. I not a baby anymore."

She let out a soft chuckle. "Okay, if you say so. Here let me wipe it off." She took his little hand in hers and reached out for a napkin.

A thought crossed her mind as she wiped his hand, if not for anything, for Jeremy, she had to sort herself out.

Cara sat inside her car for a long minute. She felt so uneasy after her conversation with Jessica, was it because of Jeremy perhaps?

She shook her head. Something about the way she spoke to Jessica made her feel guilty. After all, Jessica was right. They had been best friends before Jessica ruined everything.

But Jessica's confidence amazed her still. How could she call her up to demand for such an absurd amount of money without even feeling ashamed?

A hundred million dollars! Not a dollar!

And how could she call such a betrayal a fall out? She had stolen from her, three whole years of being a devoted wife tossed into the bin because of her and she had the audacity to call it a fall out? How dare she?

Cara felt a storm rising inside of her but her emotions were confused. She knew she was angry but who was she angry at? Jessica or herself? And she felt bad too for being so strict but it was not undeserved. Or was it?

She groaned, squeezing on to her steering wheel tightly.

The screen of her phone came alive, the name Romeo displayed on the screen as it rang out.

Drawing a long sigh, she felt her uneasiness lessen and she closed her eyes for a short countdown before answering the call. "Hey,"

"Hey, what's up? I don't mean to interfere with your hang out with your friend, I just wanted to check on you and know how you are doing."

A soft smile crept on her face. Amidst the storm, there was always a resort for her to fall back to for safety. "Thank you. Actually, I'm on my way home."

"Oh that's splendid. What would you like me to prepare for you? I actually have something to discuss with you."

"Oh..." She seemed a bit disturbed, her forehead creasing. "Well okay then. Can you please prepare a bottle of wine? Non-alcoholic but feels like alcoholic. I know I can't drink because of our baby and I have had a long morning so I just want something to knock me out... Safely."

"I will do my best. Hang up now, it's not safe to call and drive. I love you."

"Love you too." She hung up and let out a sigh. What could he possibly have to talk about? He sounded a bit serious. She also had something to talk to him about, Abigail's case.

That was very important to her. She had never been a mother before but she knew how Abigail must be so lonely without her only family. She felt that way too after her mother passed away.

Another heavy sigh drew from her mouth as she started the engine. She just wanted peace.

Arriving at her place, she got out of the car and went to her safe space. Romeo. Without a word, she buried herself in his arms and cuddled him like she never wanted to let go.

Romeo's lips curved into a smile, his emerald green eyes staring down at his woman. "It has only been a few hours since dawn and you are already this exhausted? I refuse to believe it is a pregnancy symptom."

Cara let out a soft chuckle. She looked up at his face and reached in for a kiss. Her wish was granted. "No actually, a lot has happened within those few hours. A lot you wouldn't believe." She finally released herself from his hold.

She walked over to the dining table and sat down. "Wine?"

"Right." He walked into the kitchen and took out a bottle and two glasses. "I had it delivered quickly, it's called Ariel Cabernet Sauvignon, a duplicate of the original. Apparently it still preserves the alcoholic taste even though it has been dealcoholized using reverse osmosis." He explained as he opened the bottle of red wine.

"I don't know what reverse osmosis is and I don't want to know. I just want to drink." She groaned.

He smiled softly as he poured her a glass. "It is safe for pregnant women of course but don't drink too much at once."

Cara nodded her head lazily with a gentle smile before taking a sip from the wine. "Hmm... Tastes like grape to me."

"Yeah but that zeal you get from taking alcohol is still there... Kind of." He sat up in his seat. "Okay how about talking it out? Tell me exactly what it is that drained you."

She took a deep breath and sat up herself. She still found it odd to believe the words that prepared to leave her mouth. "So here's how it all started..."
