Chapter 136 It Burns
Cara could not believe what had just played out, why was Jayden still a delinquent as always? Did he not see the need to amend his ways?
She let out a scoff of irritation and took a deep breath to calm herself. Realizing that she had zoned out for a moment, she cleared her throat and managed a weak and apologetic smile. "Abigail, I am so sorry about that, that's the way he has always been and i want you to believe me when i say he is not a friend--"
"Cara, calm down," Abigail cut her off softly. "It's fine, i could see how stiff you went when you saw him coming by. I had expected something like that from a man who did not even bother to sit down properly in the first place." She said with a soft laughter.
Cara smiled. "But still, he was really rude and that was my fault for entertaining him in the first place."
"No dear, you are a public figure now," Abigail reached out and touched Cara's hand gently. "Expect more of this from even strangers and in situations like that, all you can do is smile. You're like the freaking queen of this city of something so you are bound to get a lot of attention, even unwanted ones and nothing can be done about that."
"I understand that but this one is different. It's complicated, it's--"
"--not something you have to explain to me." Abigail cut her off once more, completing Cara's sentence for her. She smiled softly and squeezed Cara's hand affectionately. "I am not expecting you to tell me everything about yourself right away, I am not doing the same either.
"I just want to be a friend to you and eventually, if it's meant to be, our relationship can grow from there, bringing us closer to each other than we were before."
Cara could not believe such niceness still existed. But was she wrong to doubt her? After all, Jessica and Chris had been nice to her when they wanted to enter her life, was she wrong to have trust issues?
But then there was Romeo who had been nothing but nice from the very beginning and he still was and forever would be.
Not everyone was the same, but she still needed time to get to know her properly and maybe trust her too.
"You know..." Abigail started softly, hands now on the warm cup of coffee standing on the table before her. A cute smile tugged at her lips and brightened up her dark eyes.
"If you are not too comfortable staying here any longer, we could always go somewhere else. Would you like to take an ultrasound? I'll do it without any charge. Oh and you need to check your blood pressure as well because a pregnant woman should not have flared up the way you did."
Cara's smile widened. "I told you that I am already registered with my fiance's hospital and i am not going to change that just because you and I are friends."
"I know, I know. It's just that..." Abigail sighed softly, "being on leave is very boring and I really miss taking ultrasounds and taking deliveries. I miss seeing those cute babies forming inside their mother's womb and getting to hear their first cry."
Cara rolled her eyes and reached for her cup. "You are a weirdo." She commented before sipping from her ice tea.
Abigail fell silent, staring at her.
Cara noticed this and immediately corrected herself, "no, the baby obsession doesn't make you a weirdo, no actually putting it like that makes you a really big creep instead, but what I mean is that who doesn't enjoy leave of absence? You get to rest! It's what it's meant for so you should not take it for granted."
Abigail broke out in a soft laughter. "Relax, I was only pulling your legs. Besides, I am a weirdo so that was a statement that meant you have acknowledged me for who i am. I am grateful."
Cara's laughter graced the room as she let out a gentle chuckle. Her face lit up as brightly as the sun could and her laughter was one of the most beautiful sounds ever heard.
She cleared her throat softly and nodded, finally giving in. "Alright then, an ultrasound, if you desperately wish it."
"Yes!" Abigail exclaimed excitedly, squealing and almost dancing in her seat. "Let's go to my place, it's not too far I promise."
Cara's brow arched. "Your place? What about the ultrasound machine?"
"Oh don't worry about that, I have a lab in my house. All my neighbors come to me when they are pregnant because they want a heavy discount and a free ultrasound whenever. Plus, it's close to them." Abigail explained.
"Oh wow... You are an amazing weirdo." Cara commented.
Abigail smiled. "Thank you your majesty, I shall escort you now to the lab of your lowly servant." She gave a bow of her head and both ladies broke out in a chorused laughter.
Jessica was seated at the edge of her seat, she did not know why but she felt so angry every single time she heard Cara and the other lady share a laugh like they were a happy couple.
They used to be like that once, Cara cared about her once, she shared laughter and tears with her once, why was it now all a tale of the past?
She knew why, of course, but she still wanted to question it.
She kept glancing at them, curiously wondering what they could be talking about.
Where has they met each other? How had they met? How did they become friends? She wanted to know everything.
"It burns right?" Jayden's voice cut through her thoughts like a sharp knife.
She turned her head to look at him but only briefly. When her eyes returned to Cara and the other lady, they were both on their feet now, getting ready to leave.
She saw them off with her eyes, Cara did not even bother to glance at them.
She could not help but to think, 'is that how little she regards me?'
