Chapter 78

“I think we need to stay close to Sonya here until they get back. I know we came from that direction so I would assume they will also be coming from that direction.” Greg says.

“Do you think we should spread out a little from her to try to keep people away?” Jake asks.

“No because then we leave her open. I don’t want that. It would be better if we stay here and if nothing else we will stand over her to protect her.”

“Let’s see if we can find something to cover her with. Kind of camouflage and protect her for the elements.” Jake directs Greg.

“You stay here I will go.”

Jake nods and looks down to Sonya again. He runs his hand down the side of her face and bends down to kiss her. “Hold on baby. We’ll get out of here. Just hang on.” He kisses her again and sits down putting her head in his lap.

Sonya flutters her eyes open a little and groans. She looks at Jake and smiles at him. “It hurts babe. What happened?”

“You tripped over a tree root. I’m sorry. I had to cause you pain to reset your leg.”

“Wait reset my leg. What happened?”

“You broke your leg love.”

“Oh no. I keep being more of a burden to you.” Sonya bursts into tears.

“Sonya look at me please.” Sonya shakes her head.

“I can’t I am such a horrible mate. I do nothing but bring pain and problems to you. I’m so sorry.”

“Baby you stop that right now. You are not a burden to me in any way. I promise. It’s not like it’s your fault. Do you think I would rather be anywhere but with you? Problems and all.”

Sonya keeps crying. “You can’t even see it. I love you so much but I can’t keep causing you problems like this. I should just die.”

“You stop talking like that or I will get mad at you. You are the furthest thing from a burden. I love you for who you are. The only reason you broke your leg is because we are being chased after the ally meeting. It is not your fault. Now you stop talking like that right now. I can’t do this life without you and besides, we have pups that we need to raise.” Jake says with a smile as he places his hand on her belly.

Sonya puts her hands over Jakes and he grabs hold of her hands. He kisses them and places them all on her belly bump.

“I love you my Luna. You are the most important thing to me ever. I can’t do this life without you.”

“I love you too, my Alpha. Please don’t be mad at me. I am just overwhelmed I think.”

“It’s understandable. Now I need you to rest and try to stay as quiet and as still as possible so your body can heal while we wait for reinforcements.”

“Okay my love.” Jake bends down and kisses her lips. Sonya smiles into the kiss and snuggles into his lap. Jake strokes her belly with one hand and her hair with the other.

“We will get out of this baby. I promise. Nothing will hurt you.”

“I trust you always.”

“Now rest my love.” Sonya nods and falls asleep.

Greg comes back several minutes later with big branches with lots of leaves. He lays them down close to Jake and Sonya. Jake slowly gets out from under her head and puts the sweatshirt back under Sonya’s head.

“Let’s make a shelter of sorts for now with these.” Jake says.

Greg grabs one of the branches and Jake grabs another. They stand them up against the tree and continue until the whole space is covered by the branches. Greg takes a boot lace and ties them all together towards the top so they won’t fall on them. They stand back to make sure Sonya is well hidden.

“I think we will be protected inside. We can take shifts until we get help.” Greg says.

Jake nods and they make their way back inside. Sonya is whimpering in pain. Jake picks up her head and snuggles in with her on the ground. Trying to get her comfortable. Greg moves Sonya’s leg enough to take some pressure off of it.

Jake and Sonya go to sleep snuggled up together while Greg keeps his ears open. Being inside the shelter he can’t see but he can hear if there is anyone coming near them. He makes makeshift windows around the shelter to see the grounds around them.

After 4 hours he is having a hard time staying awake so he wakes up Jake. Jake gets up to take his watch shift. Greg shows him the windows he put in the shelter to see the grounds. Then Greg switches places with Jake and holds Sonya to keep her comfortable.

After about 2 hours, Jake starts hearing twigs breaking and the sounds of paws on the ground. He can hear growling in the distance. He wakes up Greg. They both get Sonya comfortable but wake her up to make sure she knows not to make any noise.

They all stay inside the shelter and watch as at least a dozen rogue wolves come into view. They sniff the air and growl but they keep going the way they were. Greg watches where they are going while Jake watches where they came from.

About 30 minutes later they hear more twigs breaking from the same direction. They both set their senses on high alert and then at least 20 wolves come bounding into the area. Jake instantly recognizes one of them as Alpha Scott.

He rushes out to meet them. “Thank the goddess you are here. The rogues just came through here about 30 minutes ago headed that direction.”

Luna Maria comes running out and hugs Jake. “I wasn’t sure if we would find you again. How is Sonya?”
