Chapter 45: Discomfort
Chapter 45: Discomfort
Sam arrived at the hospital room swiftly, a discreet bag in his hand. He had done as instructed, bringing a selection of clothes and toiletries for Viola. He placed the bag on a nearby chair, his gaze briefly flicking to the powerful figure of Vance Sterling seated by the bed. Sam couldn't help but feel a pang of surprise, even a little bewilderment. His boss, the formidable, emotionless Vance Sterling, seemed to have been bewitched by love. Or at least, something incredibly powerful and distracting. It was a sight Sam never thought he'd witness.
Sam didn't linger. He had his own stack of urgent tasks to handle for Vance, who, despite his apparent preoccupation, was still running his vast empire from a hospital bedside. With a quiet nod that went unnoticed by his absorbed boss, Sam slipped out of the room as silently as he'd entered.
Vance barely registered Sam's departure. His focus remained on his tablet, his mind dissecting complex business proposals, but a significant part of him was still waiting. He continued working, his fingers flying across the screen, his dark eyes sharp and decisive, but every few minutes, his gaze would dart towards Viola, checking her soft, even breathing, confirming the stable rhythm of the monitor. He was patiently waiting for her to wake up.
Time seemed to stretch, marked only by the gentle beeping of the machines and the soft clicks of Vance's tablet. The hospital room remained a quiet, secluded bubble, a stark contrast to the busy world Vance typically inhabited.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Viola stirred. Her eyelids fluttered, then slowly lifted. Her emerald eyes blinked, adjusting to the dim light. She shifted, and a wave of acute discomfort washed over her. Viola woke up because she felt so sticky and uncomfortable. Her skin felt grimy, her hair tangled, and the lingering scent of antiseptic and stale sweat clung to her. The feeling was deeply unsettling for her, a strong sensation that went against her very nature. She was, at heart, a clean freak. She longed for the feel of warm water, the fresh scent of soap, the simple relief of being clean. The current state of her body felt wrong, a heavy burden on her already weary spirit.
As she slowly pushed herself up into a sitting position, her eyes scanned the room. She saw Vance Sterling, still sitting in the chair by her bed, his gaze fixed on his tablet. The sight of him, so close, so unmoving, sent a familiar ripple of apprehension through her. He was a constant, unsettling presence.
Then, Vance noticed her movement. His head lifted, his gaze immediately snapping from the glowing screen to her face. Without a word, he also put down his iPad. It landed with a soft click on the side table. Then, slowly, deliberately, he stood up.
Viola's breath hitched. His tall frame seemed to loom over her, filling the already small room. He took a single, measured step closer to the bed. His eyes were focused on her, unreadable but intense. To Viola, in her vulnerable, uncomfortable state, his sudden movement felt like an invasion, a powerful force advancing on her.
Instinct took over. When she saw Vance suddenly move closer to her, she subconsciously shrank back. Her shoulders hunched, and she instinctively pulled her legs closer to her body, creating a small, defensive barrier. Her eyes, wide with a mixture of fear and unease, stared up at him. It was a small, almost imperceptible movement, but it was clear.
Vance paused. His step halted mid-stride. He frowned, a deep line appearing between his brows. He registered her reaction instantly, the subtle shrinking away, the way her body tightened. He had seen fear in people's eyes many times, but never from her directed at him. His gaze hardened slightly, a cold frustration flickering in his eyes. He had just spent hours safeguarding her, ensuring her every need was met, silently watching over her. And her first conscious reaction to him was to shrink away?
The subtle shift in her posture, the immediate withdrawal, felt like a slap. He had been so immersed in his protective instincts, so consumed by her vulnerability, that he had forgotten the imposing effect he could have on others. He had forgotten how his sheer presence could intimidate, especially someone as delicate and easily frightened as Viola. The warmth that had been growing in his chest chilled, replaced by a cold sting of frustration. He had only moved closer to ask how she felt, to offer the clothes Sam had brought, to ensure she was truly alright.
He stood frozen, his hand still extended slightly, caught between his desire to approach and her clear, subconscious rejection. The silence in the room stretched, thick and uncomfortable, broken only by the soft beeping of the monitor. Viola stared at him, still slightly hunched, her eyes wary.
Vance lowered his hand, his frown deepening. Her reaction, while seemingly small, spoke volumes. It was a stark reminder of the immense chasm that still existed between them, a chasm built on his power and her past trauma. He had thought his silent vigil, his protection, had begun to bridge that gap. But her instinctive recoil showed him how far he still had to go.
He took a slow, deliberate step back, putting a little more space between them. The gesture was meant to reassure, but it felt stiff, unnatural. He cleared his throat, his voice low, tinged with an unfamiliar awkwardness. "Are you... are you feeling better?" he asked, trying to soften his tone, trying to make it less intimidating, less of a command. But even to his own ears, it sounded forced.
Viola slowly relaxed her shoulders, though the wary look in her eyes remained. She nodded, still not speaking. She felt the urge to shower, to scrub away the clinging discomfort, growing stronger by the second.
Vance's eyes fell on the bag of clothes Sam had left. He pointed to it. "Sam brought you some fresh clothes and toiletries. You can... wash up. If you like." He tried to make it sound like a suggestion, not an order, but his own germaphobic thoughts were screaming that she needed to wash.
Viola's gaze followed his finger, her eyes widening slightly at the sight of the bag. Fresh clothes. A shower. The thought was a sudden, overwhelming beacon of hope in her uncomfortable state. Her clean freak tendencies screamed for it. But then her eyes flicked back to Vance, standing tall and imposing just a few feet away.
She desperately wanted to get clean, but the thought of doing so with him still in the room, still watching her, felt impossible. How could she possibly ask him to leave? He was her protector, her uninvited guardian, and he seemed determined to stay. The hospital room, now felt like a very luxurious, very uncomfortable cage, with Vance Sterling holding the keys.
