Chapter 44: A baffling exception
The hospital room settled into a quiet calm after Viola had finally drifted back to sleep. Vance Sterling remained in his chair, his gaze occasionally sweeping over her peaceful, resting face. Even though she was asleep, his presence was a constant, watchful anchor in the room. He had promised to stay until she was stable, and he intended to keep that promise.
The outside world, however, did not stop for Vance Sterling. His phone, which he had kept on silent for hours, now vibrated almost constantly with urgent messages. Normally, he would be at his office, commanding his empire with precise efficiency. But today, his office was this sterile hospital room.
Throughout the rest of the day, after he noticed that Viola had gone back to sleep, Vance handled all the pending businesses in the hospital. He pulled out his slim tablet, its screen a glow in the dim room, and began to work. Emails were read and dictated, crucial decisions were made with swift, unwavering judgment. He reviewed reports, spoke in hushed, authoritative tones to his top executives, giving orders that would move millions of dollars and affect thousands of lives. He managed complex negotiations, solved unexpected crises, all from a simple chair by a hospital bed.
He was a master of multitasking, but even as he worked, a part of his mind remained entirely focused on Viola. Every few minutes, his eyes would flick from the glowing screen to her face, checking her breathing, noting the steady rhythm of the monitor. He wouldn't let his attention stray for too long. He was efficient, yes, but he was also waiting for Viola to wake up.
As the hours passed, and the soft light of evening began to filter through the blinds, a new thought crossed his mind. Viola had been through so much. The brain bleed, the cardiac arrest, the CPR, her own collapse, the emotional strain of Clara's visit – it had all happened in a blur of terrifying urgency. She hadn't left her father's side, hadn't rested, hadn't even had a moment to herself.
He realized then that she hadn't washed up for God-knows how long because of her overwhelming things bombarding her. The thought, usually, would have caused a visceral reaction in him. Vance Sterling was a man of impeccable order, of pristine cleanliness. He was meticulous about his surroundings, his clothes, and anyone he came into close contact with. He was, to put it simply, a germaphobe. The idea of being near someone who hadn't properly cleaned themselves for days would normally fill him with a profound sense of repulsion.
But as he looked at Viola now, peacefully sleeping, her hair slightly disheveled on the pillow, her skin pale but soft, a strange sensation washed over him. Vance frowned and wondered. How could this be? How could he, a man who recoiled from the slightest speck of dust or hint of unhygienic conditions, feel absolutely nothing of the sort towards her? But how come he didn't find it repulsive despite knowing that Viola hadn't cleaned up for a while?
He mentally cataloged the usual sensations: the instinctive urge to step back, the subtle tightening of his stomach, the almost immediate mental note to sanitize his hands. None of that was happening now. He was sitting mere feet from her, had held her arm, had even felt the soft tug of her hand on his shirt. He had been close enough to smell her, to notice the subtle scent of the hospital, but not the faint, unwashed smell he would normally expect from someone in her situation. More importantly, even if he did detect such a scent, it didn't trigger his usual disgust.
It was baffling. It defied his very nature, a core part of his personality that had been present for as long as he could remember. His germaphobia wasn't a minor quirk; it was a deeply ingrained characteristic that influenced many of his interactions and decisions. Yet, with Viola, it simply... vanished.
A flicker of something unreadable crossed his face. An anomaly. Viola was an anomaly in every sense. She had intrigued him, then fascinated him, then made him protective in ways he couldn't have imagined. And now, she defied even his physical boundaries, his ingrained aversion to germs. It was unsettling, profoundly so, but also incredibly compelling.
He found himself leaning forward slightly, observing her more closely. There was a delicate beauty to her, even in her sleep. Her long lashes rested against her cheeks, and her lips, soft and slightly parted, seemed almost innocent. He felt a powerful urge, not of repulsion, but of something akin to tenderness. It was a feeling so foreign, so deeply buried, that it shook him.
He quickly pulled his thoughts back. Practicality. That's what he needed. She needed to feel refreshed, to feel human again. It would aid her recovery, lift her spirits.
He picked up his phone and sent a concise text message to Sam, his secretary. "Arrange for a complete change of clothes for Viola. Discreetly. Include toiletries. Bring them to the hospital room immediately."
Sam's reply was instantaneous: "Understood, Mr. Sterling. On my way."
Vance put his phone down. He watched Viola for a few more minutes, the question of his unusual lack of repulsion still nagging at him. It was a secret, an internal mystery that only he was aware of. And it only solidified the growing realization that Viola was not just someone he was interested in, or even protective of. She was becoming something far more significant, something that challenged his very understanding of himself. She was an exception to his rules, a break in his carefully constructed world.
He stood up, stretching slightly, his large frame suddenly filling the quiet room. He walked to the window, looking out at the city lights. His germaphobia had always kept a certain distance between him and others, a subtle barrier. But with Viola, that barrier had inexplicably dissolved. What did that mean? What kind of hold was this fragile woman gaining over him, a man who had always been impenetrable?
He turned back to look at her, a silent question in his dark eyes. A new feeling, unfamiliar and powerful, began to stir deep within him – a realization that his meticulous control, his carefully constructed life, was being irrevocably altered by one green-eyed woman. He wasn't sure if he should fight it, or simply surrender to this baffling, new sensation.
