Chapter 75 Monster On The Run

Chapter 75 Monster On The Run

Lucas's POV

Sheriff Maurice and Mark are getting closer to me than I expected. This doesn't seem good to me. I thought they would have given up on me already same way they previously lost track of me.

With the evidence they have against me, I am most likely to spend the rest of my life in jail.

“No, you cannot let this happen to you. Remember everything you've been through just to get to this stage. Only losers quit,” I recited a quote from a popular motivational book I read recently.

I just needed to rely on my individual brilliance since no one is coming to save me.

I shut my eyes, and when I opened them, I activated the beast mode and started the ride again.

I drove so fast that I exceeded my speed limit. For the second time, I managed to escape from them.

But I didn't pull over to rest like I did the previous time. I had a feeling that they still have plans to arrest me.

I chose not to return to the warehouse immediately. Rather, I managed to take a different route just to get them off my trail.

Leading them to the warehouse will cause more problems for me. I don't expect Amira to defend me.

I won't be surprised if she starts singing like a bird immediately when she sees the cops.

“I just hope they won't follow me down here as they did before. I just can't deal with this any more,” I made my wishes even though it's difficult to achieve.

I kept the hope alive while still staring at my wristwatch. It's past midnight, and I'm still outside, trying to figure myself out.

My whole problem started when I shot Parker in the chest for the first time.

As much as I hate to admit this, I regretted ever killing him. Perhaps, if he were alive, I wouldn't have found myself in this hot seat.

And with our unity, we probably would have got what we wanted from Kingston and forgotten that this mission ever existed.

My phone rang while I was still racking my brain. Out of anticipation, I rushed to answer the phone without confirming who was calling.

I had assumed it was Kingston. He's the only person I want to have a conversation with right now.

“Now listen good, I have your daughter, and you must be ready to follow my instructions,” I briefed Kingston.

I started by putting the fear in him so he would understand that I am not kidding.

But to my surprise, I heard a voice saying, “We would find you, Lucas. You can't run away from your crimes. Watch out for us. You have absolutely no idea what you have just gotten yourself into.”

With an immediate effect, I took the phone off my ear to confirm who I was speaking with. It turns out to be Mark, the cop.

My impatience has created more problems for me. It won't cost me anything to confirm the caller before singing like a bird.

I terminated the conversation and switched off my phone to regain my sanity. I just shot myself in the legs.

Now the police have two strong allegations against me. First, it's the murder of Parker, my brother.

Just when I thought it won't get any worse, I may just confess about Amira's kidnap case to them.

My only joy is that no name was mentioned. Mark and Sheriff Maurice would have conducted a quick investigation from my end.

I drove straight to the warehouse to pick up Amira. I am done acting like a dummy. There's no point in time to take the bull by the horns now.

This is the price I pay for wanting to be rich. Keeping Amira in the warehouse isn't safe for me any more especially when I've emerged on the wanted list of the police.

I brought out my gun as a means of defence should Sheriff Maurice and Mark decide to aim at me.

“Amira!” I screamed with a loud voice as I pulled up in the warehouse. “Where the hell are you?”

No one answered, but I wasn't bothered. I had a feeling that she was scared to speak after what I did to her the last time.

I went straight to where I last saw her and to my surprise, she's gone. There's no sign of her anywhere.

And the most shocking part? The chains used to hold her captive are on the ground.

A closer look at the chains and I saw the keys used to unlock them. I picked it up to be certain I wasn't hallucinating.

I wasn't sure how she managed to get a hold of the keys. All along, she was plotting her escape and I didn't even notice a thing.

That explains why she didn't complain about being alone when I told her I was stepping out to dispose of Parker's corpse.

I should have known that it was her wish. She needed me to leave so she could carry out her plot successfully.

“I know you're hiding in there right now. Just come outside and I promise not to hurt you. You do know what I am capable of doing to those who step on my toes, don't you?" I spoke nicely in an attempt to lure her out of her hiding place.

I am pretty sure that Amira isn't smart enough to resist manipulation.

My biggest fear is happening to me already. In just one night, I have lost Parker, and I am about to lose Amira, who's meant to be my trophy trap.

“No!” I screamed to the point where I stretched my vocal cords.

“How did I screw this up? I shouldn't have left her here all alone,” I berated myself for making such silly decisions.

But after recalling my nasty experience with Sheriff Maurice and Mark, I realised that I was still spot on.

I wasn't ready to give up now, not after the sacrifice I had made for this mission.

I shot the gun in the air in frustration while still screaming Amira's name, “Trust me, Amira. You don't want to end up like Parker. If I could murder my blood brother, what made you feel your life is any more precious to me,”

Still, I got no response. I am starting to act weird. I can feel the nuts in my head losing themselves.

I ransacked the warehouse searching for Amira, yet I couldn't find her.

I was beginning to lose hope and confidence in myself again.

“No, this must be a dream. Amira couldn't have escaped,” I was still in denial until it dawned on me that I needed to act fast before it became more complicated than it already is.

I itched my head to come up with a better solution, and it worked for me. My memory felt refreshed like a newborn baby.

I returned to the car and turned on my phone. I did the same thing for Parker's phone too.

I didn't hesitate to scan Parker's contact list for Kingston's phone number, and I found it.

I wasn't rushing to dial his number. Instead, I exhaled a bit to put myself together.

It's obvious that I'm losing focus, and I am never accomplishing my mission by sounding like a broken record.

Kingston won't take me seriously. He might as well mock me for acting like a clown.

I dialled the phone number when I was sure that I had got back my rhythm. I am not patient enough to text Kingston and wish for his response, the same way Parker did.

Wei might be brothers, but we certainly don't share the same thoughts.

Kingston snubbed my call. But I didn't give up. Even if it takes a thousand attempts for him to answer the phone, I was willing to wait.

My patience eventually paid off when he answered the phone after the fifth attempt.

“Who am I speaking with, please? I can't seem to recognise this voice, and the number isn't saved on my device,” He asked in a baritone voice.

I salivated and cleared my throat to make my voice thicker. If I intend to extort money from Kingston, then he ought to understand that he's not dealing with a kid, but a serial killer who doesn't think twice before taking off his target.
