The Mask Crumbles

The Mask Crumbles
POV Sage Winters

The accusation hung in the air. Elena's finger trembled as it pointed at Celeste, whose face drained of color.

I watched her throat work as she swallowed hard. Her hands clenched into fists, then relaxed with visible effort. For a split second, raw panic flickered across her features. Then she drew a deep breath, straightening her shoulders as she pulled that familiar mask back into place.

"Elena, what are you talking about?" Celeste's voice emerged breathy and shocked. Her eyes widened as she pressed one hand against her chest. "Vivienne is my best friend! How could you possibly think I would hurt her grandmother?"

She turned toward Vivienne, her expression crumpling into wounded disbelief. "You know me. You know I would never do something like this. I took that overnight shift to help! How did I suddenly become the suspect?"

But Vivienne's face had gone strangely blank, her eyes fixed on Celeste with new intensity.

Elena's breathing became harsh and ragged. "Stop it! Stop pretending you're the victim here!"

Her voice cracked, tears streaming down her face, but there was steel beneath the anguish now. "You're the one who made me believe Sage and Dr. Rivers were having an affair! You've been manipulating me this whole time!"

"Elena, please—" Celeste began, her tone placating.

"No!" Elena's voice rose to a shout. "Enough with your lies, Celeste! You told me Sage was jealous of me! You said Dr. Rivers tampered with the medications in the pharmacy! You've been using me as your weapon against them!"

Celeste turned to me, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Sage, you're my cousin. We grew up together. How could I possibly spread rumors about you?"

Her voice took on a wounded quality. "How can you believe an outsider over your own family?"

The word "family" hit me like a slap. Disgust churned in my stomach. "You're not worthy of that word. You're nothing but a hypocrite."

Celeste blinked, her expression shifting to confused innocence. "I... I don't understand what you mean..."

"Enough!" Elena screamed. "Stop acting, Celeste! You told me Sage was jealous of me! You said Dr. Rivers was doing something suspicious in the pharmacy! You've been using me as your pawn to frame Sage!"

Celeste's face crumpled into hurt. "Elena, how can you say that... I've always treated you as a friend..."

"Friend?!" Elena's voice broke. "You never saw me as a friend! You just wanted me to take the fall for you!"

Vivienne had been silent throughout this exchange, but now she spoke up, her voice small and trembling. "Celeste... is what Elena's saying... true?"

Celeste immediately grabbed Vivienne's hand with both of hers, her grip tight and desperate. "Vivienne, you have to believe me! I really didn't—"

"But..." Vivienne's voice wavered with confusion. She pulled her hand back slightly, studying Celeste's face as if seeing her for the first time. "Those things you said about Sage... you lied to me..."

"I just... I just told you what I saw... I didn't think it would turn out like this..." Celeste's voice trembled, but I could see the calculation behind her eyes, still searching for an escape route.

Elena couldn't take it anymore. She lunged forward, grabbing Celeste's collar with both hands. "You liar!"

Celeste tried to push her off, her fingers clawing at Elena's wrists. They grappled, stumbling sideways into the medical equipment cart. Metal instruments clattered to the floor.

Edwin and Jason rushed forward, each grabbing one of them and pulling them apart with effort.

"You destroyed me!" Elena screamed, still struggling against Edwin's hold. Her face was flushed red, veins standing out on her neck. "You used me to frame Sage! And now you want to pin everything on me!"

Celeste straightened her clothes with shaking hands, her chest heaving as she arranged her face into frightened innocence. "I... I really don't know what's happening... Elena, please calm down..."

I stepped forward, my voice cutting through the chaos with deliberate calm. "Since you claim you're innocent, let me ask you something. What about the soup and fruit basket you sent to Marcus?"

Every eye in the room turned to Celeste. The sudden shift in attention made her freeze, her hands still smoothing down her rumpled shirt.

Her composure flickered for just a moment—a flash of panic quickly suppressed. "That... that was just an ordinary get-well gift..."

"An ordinary get-well gift?" I let the question hang in the air, watching her carefully. "Then can you explain why there was grapefruit in that basket?"

Edwin frowned, his confusion evident. "Grapefruit? What's wrong with grapefruit?"

I kept my gaze locked on Celeste, watching her face drain of what little color had returned. "Marcus has coronary artery disease. Grapefruit causes fatal interactions with the heart medications he takes. The compounds in grapefruit interfere with the enzymes that metabolize those drugs, causing dangerous accumulation in his bloodstream. It triggers cardiac episodes—potentially fatal ones."

Caius stepped forward, his voice carrying professional authority that brooked no argument. "Sage is correct. This is basic medical knowledge. Anyone with fundamental medical training should know this. It's covered in first-year pharmacology."

Thorne's voice emerged cold and deadly from beside me. "I can confirm the grapefruit. I personally ordered Jason to dispose of both the soup and the fruit basket that night."

Jason's usually impassive face showed clear shock as understanding dawned. "So... Miss Celeste was trying to poison Mr. Marcus?"

Drake's face went from red to purple. His entire body went rigid as he stared at Celeste, his hands clenching and unclenching at his sides.

"What did you say?" His voice dropped to something low and dangerous, the kind of quiet that preceded an explosion. "Grapefruit... heart medication..."

He took a step forward, his finger stabbing toward Celeste like a weapon. "You viper! You dared to try to poison my father?!"

Celeste stumbled backward, her hands raised defensively, her eyes wide with fear that might actually be genuine this time. "Dad, I... I really didn't know..."

"Don't call me Dad!" Drake's roar made everyone flinch. The sound echoed off the walls, raw and primal. "Didn't know? You're a medical student! How could you not know?!"

His face twisted as another realization hit him, memory after memory clicking into place. "So when you told me you saved my father before—that was a lie too? If you wanted to save him then, why would you try to harm him now?!"

"I... I..." Celeste's voice came out as barely a whisper. Her carefully constructed mask was crumbling, piece by piece, and there was nowhere left for her to hide. Her back hit the wall, and she pressed herself against it as if she could disappear into it.
