Chapter 2 A Bride Nobody Chose Freely
The early morning sun filtered through the tall glass windows of the Kane mansion, casting long golden shadows across the polished marble floor. Everything inside the house looked perfect—too perfect. The kind of perfection that felt more like control than comfort.
Aria Monroe stood in the middle of the grand hall, her suitcase placed neatly beside her.
She had arrived less than an hour ago.
And already, she could feel it.
This place wasn’t a home.
It was a cage dressed in luxury.
A maid approached quietly. “Mrs. Kane, your room is ready.”
Aria paused at the name.
Mrs. Kane.
It didn’t feel real.
She followed the maid upstairs, her footsteps soft against the wide staircase. Every wall they passed was decorated with expensive art, framed memories of a life she had no part in. Family portraits. Business awards. Cold achievements without warmth.
When they reached the room, the maid opened the door.
“It’s the guest suite,” the maid said carefully. “Master Adrian instructed that you stay here.”
Aria’s eyes flicked around the room. Large. Elegant. Beautiful.
And completely separate from the rest of the house.
Of course.
She nodded. “Thank you.”
The maid left quickly, as if afraid to stay too long.
Aria stepped inside and closed the door behind her.
Silence.
She exhaled slowly and placed her bag on the bed. Her fingers brushed over the soft white sheets, but there was no comfort in them. Nothing in this house felt real.
Because nothing here belonged to her.
Her gaze shifted to the window. From here, she could see part of the garden—perfectly trimmed, perfectly arranged, perfectly lifeless.
Just like everything else.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
Aria turned slightly. “Come in.”
Lucas Brand entered.
Still calm. Still unreadable.
“I hope your accommodation is acceptable,” he said.
“It’s fine,” Aria replied.
Lucas studied her for a moment. “Mr. Kane has strict rules regarding this arrangement.”
Aria gave a faint smile. “I assumed.”
“Then I will be clear,” Lucas continued. “You are not to interfere in his private schedule. You are not to enter his study or business areas without permission. And you are not to… create misunderstandings.”
Aria raised an eyebrow. “Misunderstandings?”
Lucas paused briefly. “He values privacy.”
Aria nodded slowly. “Noted.”
Lucas seemed satisfied. “Dinner is at seven. You are expected to attend.”
He turned to leave.
“Lucas,” Aria called suddenly.
He stopped.
She looked at him directly. “Does he always treat people like contracts?”
A flicker crossed Lucas’s face—something unreadable.
Then he answered carefully. “Mr. Kane treats everything according to necessity.”
And then he left.
The door closed softly behind him.
Aria stood still for a moment.
Necessity.
That word lingered in her mind longer than it should have.
She walked to the mirror on the wall. Her reflection stared back—calm face, steady eyes, but beneath it all, something sharper was hidden.
This marriage was not her choice.
It never had been.
But neither was her reason for being here.
Her fingers tightened slightly.
“Adrian Kane,” she whispered to herself. “Let’s see how perfect your world really is.”

Evening arrived quickly.
The dining hall was enormous—long table, crystal chandeliers, and enough silence to make every breath feel louder than it should.
Adrian Kane sat at the head of the table.
As always, composed. Cold. Distant.
Aria entered quietly, dressed in a simple black dress. She didn’t try to impress. She didn’t need to.
Adrian’s eyes lifted slightly as she approached.
“You’re early,” he said.
“I was told to be punctual,” Aria replied, sitting at the opposite end of the table instead of beside him.
A small silence followed.
Then Adrian spoke again. “You don’t have to sit that far.”
Aria looked at him. “I prefer it.”
A faint pause.
Then he continued eating like nothing happened.
Dinner was served in silence.
Too much space. Too much quiet.
Aria observed him carefully. Every movement precise. Every action controlled. A man who never wasted emotion, never gave away weakness.
But people like that… always had something buried underneath.
“You don’t talk much,” Aria said suddenly.
Adrian didn’t look up. “Neither do you.”
“Fair,” she replied.
Another silence.
Then Aria leaned slightly forward. “Tell me something, Adrian.”
He finally looked at her.
Cold eyes meeting steady ones.
“Why a contract marriage?” she asked.
For the first time, something shifted in his expression—not emotion, but calculation.
“That’s not your concern,” he said.
Aria smiled faintly. “Everything in this house seems to be ‘not my concern.’”
Adrian placed his fork down slowly.
His voice dropped slightly. “You agreed to the terms.”
“I agreed to the contract,” she corrected. “Not the silence.”
A tense pause.
For a moment, it felt like the air between them tightened.
Then Adrian leaned back slightly. “You’re different from what I expected.”
Aria tilted her head. “And what did you expect?”
“Obedient.”
She let out a soft laugh. “Then you chose wrong.”
For the first time, something close to curiosity deepened in his eyes.
Not warmth.
Not softness.
But interest.
And that scared her more than anything else.
Because interest meant attention.
And attention meant danger.
Outside, the mansion remained silent.
Inside, two strangers sat across from each other—bound by a contract neither of them fully trusted, each hiding something the other had not yet discovered.
And somewhere in that silence, the first crack in control had already begun.
