Chapter 1 The Contract Marriage Agreement
The rain fell in heavy sheets over the city of Lagos, turning the glass skyscrapers into blurred reflections of light and power. Thunder rolled in the distance, but inside the top floor of Kane Corporation, everything was still—too still, like the calm before a storm that had already decided who would survive and who would break.
Aria Monroe stood outside the massive double doors of the CEO’s office.
Her fingers tightened around the strap of her handbag, worn from years of use. It didn’t belong in a place like this—just like she didn’t. Everything about this building screamed wealth, control, and power. The marble floors shone like mirrors. The air smelled faintly of expensive cologne and authority.
And yet, she was here.
Not by accident.
But by choice.
A choice that had already cost her too much.
“Miss Monroe,” a calm voice called.
She turned slightly.
Lucas Brand stood behind her, dressed in a perfectly pressed suit. Adrian Kane’s personal assistant. His expression was neutral, but his eyes were sharp, observant—like he could read everything she was trying to hide.
“He’s waiting for you,” Lucas said.
Aria nodded once. “Of course he is.”
She stepped forward.
Every step felt heavier than the last, like the building itself was pressing her down, testing whether she would turn back. But she didn’t.
She couldn’t.
Lucas opened the door.
And she walked in.
The room was large, designed with expensive minimalism—dark wood, glass walls, and a skyline view that made the city look small beneath it. At the far end stood a man facing the window.
Adrian Kane.
Even without seeing his face, his presence filled the room.
Powerful. Cold. Controlled.
He turned slowly.
And Aria finally saw him.
Sharp jawline. Dark eyes that carried no warmth. A face that looked carved from perfection but built for distance, not connection. Everything about him screamed authority, but nothing about him invited closeness.
This was the man she was about to marry.
“Close the door,” Adrian said.
His voice was calm, but firm—an order, not a request.
Lucas obeyed and left.
Silence swallowed the room.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. It felt like a silent war—two strangers standing on opposite sides of something neither fully understood yet.
Adrian’s eyes moved over her slowly.
“You’re late,” he said.
Aria didn’t flinch. “I was told to arrive at this time.”
A faint pause.
Then something subtle crossed his expression—amusement, maybe.
“Sit,” he said.
Aria didn’t like being ordered around, but she moved anyway. She sat across from him, keeping her back straight, refusing to show any weakness.
Adrian walked to his desk and picked up a thick file. He placed it between them.
“The agreement,” he said.
Aria looked at it but didn’t open it immediately. “You make it sound like a business deal.”
“It is,” Adrian replied without hesitation.
That answer should have bothered her.
But it didn’t.
Because she already knew what this was.
A contract marriage.
A transaction between power and silence.
A deal that had nothing to do with love.
She opened the file.
Pages of carefully written clauses stared back at her.
Clause one: The marriage is strictly contractual.
Clause two: Public appearances only when required.
Clause three: No interference in personal or business affairs.
Clause four: Emotional attachment is not part of the agreement.
Aria’s lips curved slightly, almost like a silent laugh.
No emotional attachment.
How convenient.
“How long?” she asked.
“One year,” Adrian said.
“And after that?”
“We separate. Quietly.”
Aria closed the file slowly.
“So I’m just a placeholder,” she said.
Adrian didn’t deny it.
That silence was answer enough.
Aria leaned back slightly, studying him now instead of the contract. “Tell me something, Mr. Kane… why me?”
For the first time, something flickered in his eyes.
Not emotion.
Curiosity.
“You were chosen,” he said simply.
“By who?”
“That doesn’t concern you.”
A dangerous silence settled between them.
Aria’s grip tightened slightly under the table, but her face remained calm. Inside her chest, something sharp twisted—not pain, not fear, but something colder.
This wasn’t just a marriage.
It was controlled.
Calculated.
And someone had decided her role long before she ever entered this room.
She closed the file completely.
“Fine,” she said softly.
Adrian studied her. “You agree too easily.”
Aria looked up at him, her gaze steady.
“I didn’t come here to refuse,” she said. “I came here to finish what I started.”
For the first time, Adrian’s expression changed slightly—just a shift, barely noticeable.
Interest deepened.
Outside, thunder cracked across the sky.
Inside, two people who didn’t trust each other had just signed the beginning of something neither of them truly understood.
