Chapter 19 Secrets Behind the Company

Chapter 19 Secrets Behind the Company

Kane Corporation was not just a company.

Aria Monroe understood that fully now.

It was a structure built on layers—public success on the surface, and something far more complicated buried underneath.

That morning, she returned to the tower alone.

Adrian had left earlier for a private meeting.

Lucas had only said, “Stay within designated areas.”

As if that mattered anymore.

Aria stepped into the building with a different mindset now.

She was no longer just observing.

She was mapping.

\---

She used the visitor access pass Lucas had given her, moving through restricted but not fully locked sections of the corporate archive floor.

The air here was colder.

Quieter.

Fewer people.

More surveillance.

She could feel it.

Eyes behind cameras.

Systems recording every movement.

But she didn’t stop.

Aria walked into the archive room and closed the door behind her.

Rows of digital terminals lined the walls.

She sat down at one.

And began searching.

\---

KANE HOLDINGS — INTERNAL RECORDS

Most files required clearance.

But something unusual had happened recently.

Access permissions were subtly adjusted.

Not fully opened.

But softened.

Aria noticed it immediately.

“This is intentional,” she murmured.

Someone was allowing her to see more.

Not everything.

Just enough.

She typed carefully.

PROJECT ECLIPSE

The screen flickered.

More files appeared than before.

Her eyes narrowed.

“This wasn’t available yesterday,” she whispered.

She opened the first file.

\---

Project ECLIPSE — Financial restructuring initiative
Timeline: Classified
Participants: Kane Holdings, External Investors
Oversight: Richard Kane (Primary), Secondary unknown

Aria leaned closer.

“Secondary unknown…”

That detail mattered.

She continued reading.

Midway through the file, her eyes stopped.

A section marked:

INTERNAL INVESTIGATOR: NINA GRAY

Her breath slowed.

So her mother wasn’t just involved.

She was investigating.

Aria’s fingers tightened slightly.

“What did you find?” she murmured.

\---

Footsteps echoed outside the archive room.

Aria quickly minimized the screen.

The door opened.

Lucas Brand stepped in.

He didn’t look surprised.

“You’re not supposed to be here,” he said calmly.

Aria didn’t turn. “And yet you’re not stopping me.”

Lucas closed the door behind him.

“That depends on what you’re looking for,” he replied.

Aria looked at him directly.

“I found my mother’s name in your internal files,” she said.

Lucas paused.

Just slightly.

Aria noticed.

“That means she wasn’t just connected to your family,” she continued. “She was investigating you.”

Lucas exhaled slowly.

“That’s… not new information,” he said carefully.

Aria frowned. “What do you mean?”

Lucas stepped closer.

“She was assigned internally,” he said.

Aria’s expression hardened. “Assigned by who?”

Lucas hesitated.

Then replied,

“By Adrian’s father.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Immediate.

Aria stood up slowly. “Richard Kane assigned my mother to investigate his own company?”

Lucas nodded slightly.

“But she wasn’t supposed to go as far as she did,” he added.

Aria’s voice dropped. “And what did she find?”

Lucas looked away briefly.

“That’s where things changed,” he said quietly.

\---

Later that afternoon, Aria returned to the mansion with a different weight in her chest.

Not confusion anymore.

Structure.

Pattern.

Truth was forming.

But incomplete.

She entered her room and immediately locked the door.

Then opened her notes.

Everything now connected in a way she hadn’t seen before.

Project ECLIPSE.

Her mother.

Richard Kane.

A hidden investigator role.

And a termination clause that looked falsified.

Aria leaned back slowly.

“This wasn’t just corruption,” she said softly.

“This was a cover-up inside the company itself.”

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She answered immediately.

“Speak.”

The voice came quickly.

“You’re inside the corporate files now.”

Aria narrowed her eyes. “You’re tracking me.”

“Yes,” the voice replied.

A pause.

Then—

“And so is Victoria Hale.”

Aria went still.

“She’s involved in this too?” she asked.

A faint sound of confirmation.

“She is closer to the center than you think.”

Aria’s grip tightened.

“Then why tell me?”

The voice paused.

“Because Adrian Kane is not the only one protecting secrets.”

Beep.

The line ended.

\---

That night, Adrian returned to the mansion later than usual.

Aria was already waiting in the study.

He paused when he saw her.

“You accessed the archives,” he said.

Aria didn’t deny it. “Yes.”

A pause.

Adrian stepped inside slowly.

“What did you find?” he asked.

Aria met his gaze.

“Enough to know your company is built on hidden investigations and erased truths.”

Silence.

Adrian didn’t react immediately.

Then he said quietly,

“That is not incorrect.”

Aria narrowed her eyes. “So you admit it?”

Adrian’s expression remained controlled.

“I admit complexity,” he said.

Aria stepped closer.

“My mother was investigating your company,” she said. “Under your father’s orders.”

A pause.

Adrian didn’t deny it.

That silence confirmed everything.

Aria’s voice lowered.

“Then why was she erased?”

A long silence followed.

Adrian finally spoke.

“Because she reached something she wasn’t supposed to understand.”

Aria stared at him.

“And what was that?”

Adrian’s gaze darkened slightly.

“That,” he said quietly, “is what I am still trying to uncover.”

Silence filled the room again.

But this time…

it wasn’t just tension.

It was alignment.

Two people now moving toward the same hidden truth.

From different sides.

With different intentions.

And neither of them fully trusting the other anymore.
