Chapter 18 A Rival Appears

Chapter 18 A Rival Appears

The Kane corporate tower was louder than the mansion, but no less controlled.

Everything here moved with precision—employees, meetings, decisions, even silence between conversations.

Aria Monroe stood in the private lobby beside Adrian Kane, observing it all quietly.

This was the first time she had entered Kane Corporation.

And immediately, she understood something important.

This was not just a business.

It was power disguised as structure.

Adrian walked ahead without stopping, and Aria followed closely.

Lucas Brand was already waiting near the elevator.

“Board members are ready,” Lucas said.

Adrian nodded once. “Proceed.”

Aria noticed the shift instantly.

Here, Adrian was different.

Not colder.

But sharper.

More distant.

Like the environment required a different version of him.

\---

As they entered the boardroom, every conversation stopped.

Men and women in expensive suits turned to look.

Some with curiosity.

Some with calculation.

Some with clear disapproval.

Aria felt it immediately.

She was not welcome.

Not here.

Not by them.

A woman sitting near the center of the table leaned slightly forward.

Victoria Hale.

Aria recognized her instantly.

The same woman from the first public appearance.

But here, she looked more powerful.

More comfortable.

Victoria’s lips curved slightly.

“So,” she said softly, “she made it to the boardroom level.”

A few faint chuckles followed.

Aria didn’t react.

Adrian remained standing beside her.

Unmoved.

Victoria’s eyes lingered on Aria.

“Still silent,” she continued. “Or has she learned to speak in corporate rooms now?”

Aria finally turned her head slightly.

“I speak when it matters,” she said calmly.

A brief silence followed.

Victoria smiled.

“Interesting,” she replied. “Let’s see if she survives here long enough for that to matter.”

\---

Adrian took his seat at the head of the table.

Aria stood slightly behind him.

Lucas remained near the wall.

The meeting began.

Numbers.

Reports.

Projections.

Everything spoken in controlled language.

But Aria noticed something else.

Every time Adrian spoke, the room adjusted.

Not out of respect alone.

But out of dependence.

He was not just leading.

He was holding the structure together.

Then Victoria spoke again.

“This recent internal shift in access permissions,” she said, glancing toward Lucas, “is concerning.”

Lucas remained calm. “It was authorized.”

Victoria tilted her head. “By whom?”

Silence.

She turned her gaze slightly toward Aria.

“Or should I say… influenced?”

Aria didn’t flinch.

But the room shifted slightly.

Attention moved toward her.

Adrian spoke before the silence could grow.

“Continue the agenda,” he said coldly.

Victoria leaned back slightly.

But her eyes didn’t leave Aria.

\---

After the meeting, Aria walked out first.

Adrian followed.

Lucas stayed behind briefly.

The corridor outside was quieter.

Aria finally spoke.

“That woman hates me,” she said.

Adrian replied calmly, “Victoria dislikes unpredictability.”

Aria glanced at him. “That’s not what this is.”

A pause.

Adrian looked at her. “Explain.”

Aria stopped walking.

“She’s not just reacting,” she said. “She’s positioning.”

Adrian studied her.

“And?”

Aria continued, “She wants something from you.”

A brief silence followed.

Then Adrian said quietly,

“That is not new.”

Aria narrowed her eyes. “But I am.”

That made him pause slightly.

\---

Behind them, Victoria stepped out of the boardroom with two executives.

She watched them from a distance.

Then spoke softly.

“So that’s her.”

One of the executives nodded. “The contract wife.”

Victoria smiled faintly.

“No,” she said.

A pause.

“She’s something else.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly as she watched Aria.

“And I want to know what.”

\---

Later, Aria was shown a private office inside the tower.

Adrian’s temporary workspace.

She entered slowly.

He was already inside.

“You brought me here to observe?” she asked.

Adrian didn’t look up immediately. “Yes.”

Aria crossed her arms. “Or to protect me?”

A faint pause.

Adrian finally looked at her.

“Both are possible,” he said.

Aria walked closer.

“Victoria Hale is not just a rival,” she said.

Adrian’s expression sharpened slightly.

“No,” he replied.

Aria continued, “She knows more than she shows.”

A pause.

Adrian didn’t deny it.

That alone confirmed her suspicion.

Aria leaned slightly forward.

“She’s connected to your family issues,” she said.

Adrian’s gaze darkened.

“That is not confirmed.”

Aria tilted her head. “But you didn’t deny it either.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Controlled.

Then Adrian said quietly,

“Be careful around her.”

Aria gave a faint smile.

“So she is dangerous.”

Adrian replied simply, “Yes.”

A pause.

Then he added,

“More than you realize.”

\---

That night, Victoria stood alone in her private office.

She held a file.

Aria Monroe.

Background incomplete.

History partially erased.

But something stood out.

Nina Gray.

Victoria’s expression changed slightly.

“So that’s the connection,” she murmured.

She closed the file slowly.

And smiled.

“Adrian Kane,” she whispered, “you’re hiding more than I thought.”

\---

Back at the mansion, Aria sat alone again.

But this time, she wasn’t thinking about fear.

She was thinking about positioning.

Victoria Hale was not just a rival.

She was a signal.

That Aria was now officially part of a larger conflict.

And Adrian Kane…

was standing at the center of it.

Behind her, in the hallway, Adrian paused briefly outside her door.

He didn’t enter.

He only listened.

Then turned away.

Because both of them were now aware of the same truth.

The more Aria learned…

the more enemies she attracted.

And Victoria Hale…

was only the first to step forward openly.
