Chapter 48: Heartbeat
Giselle was lying on the table in the scan room “How are you doing today, Miss Smith?” Giselle’s doctor asked her as she put on her gloves and took out the gel bottle “this is going to be a little cold” she squeezed the gooey gel onto Giselle’s stomach making her hiss.
“I am doing good, doctor. I just want to know how my baby is doing?” The doctor moved the wand on her stomach while Giselle and Annalise looked over at the monitor with their hearts beating in anticipation.
“Everything looks good, and your baby looks healthy too” The doctor moved the wand around “You want to hear your baby’s heartbeat?”
Giselle looked at her mother with excitement before looking at her doctor and nodding her head in approval. Giselle’s world stopped around her when she heard her baby’s heartbeat. Hearing it made it all the more real! It started to sink in that she was given the gift of bringing this beautiful soul into this world.
Tears brimmed in Giselle and Annalise’s eyes as they heard the lub – dub sound of the little one “Your baby has a strong heartbeat, Miss. Smith.”
Doctor’s words made the mother daughter duo to break the silence with their happy cries “Thank you doctor, thank you, thank you, thank you.” Annalise hugged the doctor repeatedly while Giselle cleaned the gel from her stomach and got off the examination table. “Let’s go to my cabin and look over the bloodwork.”
Giselle and Annalise were sitting with bater breath while the doctor went through the reports, she just received of Giselle’s blood work “Your hemoglobin levels are of concern to me, Miss. Smith. They are way below the required levels, and this could affect your pregnancy as well and the chances of your miscarriage are high because of this. Your BP also a bit on the higher side!”
Annalise leaned forward in her chair “Doctor, my daughter has been going through a lot recently, but I promise, I will be with her and take proper care of her. By her next visit, I will make sure that she is healthy and follows your instructions rigorously!”
The doctor smiled and started writing a prescription for Giselle “You need to make sure that she takes these supplements and medicines regularly as mentioned in the prescription. More than these medicines try to make her eat food rich in Iron to help increase her hemoglobin.”
Annalise and Giselle came out of the examination room with smiles on their faces. They went to the scan room to get their baby’s scan, their baby’s first image “I hope you are not foolish enough to use that bastard of a baby to capture my son and enter his life.”
Annalise wanted to rip this woman apart, but Giselle grasped her hand and gestured for her to control herself with a shake of her head “Mrs. Black, don’t worry, I left your son and not the other way around. I would not go back to that man even if he was the last man alive on this planet!”
The smile on Giselle’s face vanished in a second when she looked up and saw Mrs. Black “And you call my baby a ‘bastard’ one more bloody time, I will tear you into pieces and feed you to pigs! You better watch your mouth when it comes to my baby. I tolerated your filthy attitude coz I loved your son!”
Mrs. Black scoffed tugging at her coat to cover her shoulders, though she was mocking Giselle, little fear made its way to her eyes when she heard the way Giselle spoke with her rudely “I don’t like to get dirt on me, so stay the fuck away from me!”
Her words infuriated Annalise, she couldn’t help but grit her teeth ‘This woman, she acted so well mannered, but the reality is so far opposite of what she actually is!’ Annalise wished that if she got an opportunity, she would grab that woman’s hair and pull those hair extensions out to show her true beauty!
Mrs. Black scoffed, again “You better stay the fuck away from my son!” She started walking away when she heard Annalise’s disdainful voice warn her.
“If you so much as lay a finger on my daughter, I will get Charlie to come say ‘hello’ to you, the old – fashioned way for old – time's sake” The name Charlie sent shivers down Mrs. Black’s back. A part of her dark past that gave her nightmares to this day.
She tucked her tail between her legs and escaped the mother daughter duo in haste like her tail was on fire!

Giselle’s PoV
I spared a glance over my shoulder at my mother, the woman tackled a beast like it was a child’s play “Mom, who is this, Charlie?”
My mother laughed looping her arms in mine making me walk towards the pharmacy “No one important.” She shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly.
“Oh, come on! It was important otherwise that woman, who thinks she is better than everyone, would not have shut her mouth and ran – away like her life depended on it!” I bumped my shoulder with her and tried to nudge her to tell me the truth “Come on, mom, you can tell me, I promise not to tell another soul!”
“It’s nothing important, my dear, let us just buy the medicines and your supplements. I don’t like you staying in the hospital any longer than needed” my mother asked the staff at the pharmacy counter to hurry up and made sure that we reached home in time for lunch.
I don’t know why or what she is hiding from me, but I could not push her to tell me about it! It is definitely something that could bring Mrs. Black down to her knees! Information like this is a very powerful weapon in the enemy's hands and I am glad that my mother had this weapon to shut that good – for – nothing beast up.
Although my encounter with Mrs. Black was a sour one where I got the upper hand coz of my mother, I could not help but feel as though I was being watched and not in a good way! “What is it, Giselle?” We were in the parking lot and just about to enter our car when I looked around, but there was no one in particular that I could pick from the crowd of people.
“Let’s just go, mom, I am not getting a good feeling too!” I tried my best to not make mother panic, but it was as if she had a panic radar of her own, she narrowed her eyes stared particularly in one direction, and this made me look in that very same direction, but there was no one there “Mom... MOM!”
“Huh?” my mother looked at me a little startled, but she quickly shook herself out of it and gave me a smile “I thought I saw someone I know!” She shrugged her shoulders and got inside the car.
Minutes were turning into hours and hours were turning into days and Days were turning into weeks, and before I knew it, it was time to get my father out, and there was no proof in my hands! “Were you able to track them down, Tanner?”
Tanner raked a hand roughly through his hair sighing in defeat as he tiredly fell on the sofa “I have got the best hackers working on this and so far, they have not been able to make any progress. Whoever this person is, they are protected behind a firewall that is too tough to break through!”
“Shit!” I cursed flopping on the sofa beside Tanner. “There is something we must be missing, Tanner. This person knows our every bloody move and has always been one step ahead of us so far! I do not understand what we are not seeing?”
“Are you sure you don’t want to...” I cut him off knowing what he was suggesting.
“Tanner, we talked about this already! Whoever is behind this, they don’t want me around Colton, do you think they will send us the proof if I go to the very person they want me to stay away from and ask for help?” I scoffed getting pissed at myself for being so helpless ‘If only I was as powerful as Colton!’
I heard Tanner sigh with his hands folded over his knees “You do have a point there, but we are running out of resources to find this person or persons that are behind Mr. Smith’s arrest and disgrace!”
“No one is angrier than me at the turn of events, but that doesn’t mean we jump headfirst into the situation when all our cards are exposed to our enemy. We need to think this through and handle it carefully, Tanner!” I got to my feet and went to the kitchen to grab some water.
I was lost in my head space when I heard Tanner clear his throat “It’s good see that you got your fire back” he stood straighter and tucked his hands in his pockets. I sometimes forget how handsome Tanner is, if only I could fall out of love with Colton, I would maybe have the courage to fall in love again!
