Chapter 133
My breath caught in my throat when the gunshot ripped through the air.

I flinched so hard that my scream struck in my chest. I thought Kayden had shot Matteo. For a moment my blood pressure shot up so high that everything became white. I couldn't see anything. I didn't want to witness the scene that my brain was creating.

But then I blinked and found Matteo still standing on his feet. I let out the breath stuck in my throat. My eyes burned with tears.

It was one of Matteo's men who shot the gun. He was standing a little behind him, his gun raised up in the air.

Matteo lifted one of his palms, and that was enough for the man to put his gun down. Otherwise, he was dead set to kill Kayden just in case he tried to harm Matteo.

A thick and deadly silence suffocated me. Everyone stayed frozen in their places. The silence was so deep that it pricked my ears. My hands started trembling, and my breath became shaky.

To my surprise, Matteo slowly lowered his gun. And this was the point when every instinct in me screamed that Kayden was right.

He is insane!

I wanted to know what he was trying to do, but not even once did he look towards me. His eyes were fixed on Kayden as if he were reading how low he could go.

“You want this?” Matteo said calmly, there was a terrifying steadiness in his voice. “Then do it.”

My throat went dry, and my eyes widened. Has he lost his mind? Kayden is not the same person whom he loved like his child. He is now a devil who is blinded by madness.

"Shoot me!"

"Matteo!" I shouted

His eyes snapped at me just for a second before they went back to Kayden. He took a few steps ahead and stopped barely a few feet away, chest open, gun hanging loose in his hand.

“Shoot me,” Matteo challenged. “Right here!"

Kayden's hand shook slightly. He held the gun with both hands but didn't move it away from Matteo.

"You wanted this. Didn't you?" Matteo asked

"You are forcing me to do this. I never wanted to kill you. You came in between Serena and me, even after knowing that she was my friend!" Kayden spat.

"Yes, Kayden. She was your friend. That's what you told me and her. I would have happily given her to you if, for once, I knew you liked her!"

I swallowed down the emotions. Matteo's eyes were red from everything he was feeling. Betrayal, heartbreak, and pain, all at once.

"But now when I am standing between you two, the only way to get to her is by killing me. I am openly giving this chance to you. Go ahead!"

"No!" I shouted, bringing Matteo's attention to myself, "Matteo, please, what are you saying?"

My heart was shivering in my chest. I had no idea what was going on in his head.

"This is what I deserve, Sera," he swallowed, looking at me. "Don't worry about yourself. My men will rescue you but after what I have done to you, I deserve to die"

I shook my head.

"And what could be more painful for me than dying with the same hands whom I trusted the most?" his eyes flicked to Kayden.

Kayden stayed at his place unmoved. Matteo's words didn't have any effect on him. I was surprised at how cleverly all these years he maintained the facade of kindness.

I couldn't see even an ounce of guilt or pain in his eyes for his brother.

"In fact, Kayden you should have done this before. Instead of planning and plotting all that against me and sending me to jail, you should have killed me. It wouldn't have hurt me so much"

Kayden chuckled.

"Yes, I could have, but then it would have been an easy death," Kayden said, venom dripping from his voice. "Since childhood, father has always favoured you because you were his elder son with lots of potential. He saw a mafia king in you, a way to fulfil his dreams while I was just a sidekick kick"

His jaw clenched along with his hold on the gun.

"He never gave me the attention the way he gave to you. He always overlooked my potential because of you. You always got the things first just because you were older." Kayden swallowed "I let go of everything but I couldn't bear the pain when you snatched the love of my life too"

My chest was heaving up and down with every breath I inhaled. My heart was in ripples. I was feeling a lot of emotions at the same time. My brain was completely blank.

"Serena was not only my friend, but she was also my everything! She used to like me as well, but then you came in between and ruined everything. I am sure, if you hadn't come between us, she would have accepted my love. But you ... You have to take her from me, and that's what I could never forget," he snarled.

Kayden was breathing so heavily that the sounds of his breaths echoed in the car.

"I used to die every time I saw you with my Serena. Only I had the right to make her smile. She was mine the moment I saw her. I would have killed the person then and there if it were someone else, but then it was you, Matteo. My own damn brother!"

Tears filled my eyes, blurring my vision. I curled my fingers tightly into fists.

"She was my solace, my peace, my happiness, my addiction, my obsession, my love. Seeing her in your arms was like death to me. I tried to distract you through Violet, showed her the video of you with Violet but nothing... Nothing worked."

My eyes widened and snapped to Matteo. He ... He never cheated on me! It was Kayden's plan.

Oh God!

"It was then that I decided to take my revenge on you. To make you hate her and remove you from our way. When she disappeared, I waited patiently, gave her time to heal before claiming her as mine but damn you!" He gritted his teeth "you return from the jail and dragged her back into your life"

One side of Matteo's lips curled up into a smile.

"You never really cared what she wanted. Did you?" Matteo asked.

"Oh please! You are not in a position to question me. I have seen with my own eyes how you treated her in the past few months"

Matteo fell silent.

He didn't have a word to say.

His eyes slowly moved to me and all I saw in them was guilt... Pure guilt.

Kayden turned his head and lost his mind when he saw me looking at Matteo with the same intensity.

"Don't you dare look at him like that!" He threatened me, but I couldn't take my eyes off him.

"I will kill him!" Kayden announced

And just like that, his finger tightened around the trigger, and without any second thought, he pulled it.

A loud scream tore through my throat when the bullet left the gun and went straight towards Matteo...
