Chapter 73 Are You Even Human?
Jason saw Luca rushing over, the disgust in his eyes almost spilling out. He forcefully shook off Luca's outstretched hand with such strength that Luca stumbled.
"Do you even have the nerve to show up?" Jason's voice was cold and harsh, every word hitting Luca like a punch of anger. "Olivia almost burned to death in the warehouse, and what were you doing? Sticking by Windy the whole time. She called you so many times, and you didn't pick up even once. Are you even human?"
Luca froze in place, his throat feeling like it was blocked, unable to say a single word.
Following Jason's gaze, he looked at the red light above the emergency room door. The glaring red stung his eyes, and his fingers instinctively clenched, knuckles turning white.
"She almost died!" Seeing Luca stay silent, Jason's anger flared even more. His chest heaved heavily as he recalled the terrifying scene when he arrived. "The room Olivia was trapped in was full of flammable stuff. The flames shot higher than the roof. When I found her, half her clothes were burned off, she'd already passed out, and she was still clutching her phone. The screen was lit up with all the calls she made to you!"
Luca couldn't believe it. He suddenly remembered something and hurriedly pulled out his phone. Sure enough, there were several missed calls, all from Olivia.
"What the hell happened?" Luca's voice was hoarse, trembling in a way even he didn't notice. For the first time, he didn't argue with Jason, his eyes full of urgency.
Jason let out a cold laugh. "What do you think happened? Mia used Olivia's name to set up a fake meeting at Warehouse Three, tricked her into going there, locked the door, and then the fire started. The police are still looking for Mia, but I think there's something fishy about this." Jason stared at Luca, his gaze icy. "When Olivia got into trouble, Windy just happened to have a car accident and needed emergency surgery, insisting you stay with her. Isn't that a bit too convenient?"
Luca shook his head instinctively. "No way, this has nothing to do with Windy."
He looked at the missed calls on his phone, his heart tightening.
He remembered—he had to be there for Windy's surgery. The operating room required silence, so he had to turn off his phone. His focus was completely on her, and without a second thought, he did it. When he turned it back on, he didn't even glance at the missed calls. Windy said she felt awful, so he set the phone aside and held her.
Then his assistant called him...
Jason watched Luca's stubborn expression and scoffed, not bothering to say more.
He knew too well how much Luca cared about Windy. Saying anything now was pointless.
Anyone with a bit of sense could see the connection between these two events, but Luca was still in the dark, thinking it was just a coincidence.
Inside the emergency room, Olivia lay unconscious, her brow still furrowed.
Luca stood at the door, Jason's words replaying in his mind over and over. The wound on his palm had started bleeding again, but he didn't even notice. Staring at the red light, his heart was filled with regret and panic. He never imagined that just turning off his phone to be with Windy during surgery could almost cost him Olivia forever.
The light in the emergency room went off, and the doctor came out, removing his mask with a sigh of relief. "The patient is out of danger for now, but her condition is still not great. She inhaled toxic fumes that damaged her lungs badly, and the burns on her arm need proper care. Plus, she's already very weak, so she'll need a long recovery period."
Luca's heart eased a little, but then tightened again. "When will she wake up?"
"Hard to say. It could be today, could be tomorrow. It depends on her willpower." After speaking, the doctor arranged for the nurses to move Olivia to a ward.
Luca wanted to follow, but Jason stopped him. "Don't go in. She needs peace right now. Seeing you might upset her, and that's not good for her recovery."
"I'm her husband!" Luca argued.
"Husband?" Jason laughed as if he'd heard the biggest joke. "Do you deserve to call yourself that? When she was in danger, you were with another woman. And now you have the audacity to say you're her husband? Luca, what you should be doing right now is figuring out what's going on with Windy and Mia, not standing here being a nuisance."
Luca looked at Olivia being wheeled away. Her face was pale as paper, her arm wrapped in thick bandages, and her exposed wrist looked so thin it might snap with a touch.
His heart felt like it was being cut by a knife, and in the end, he stopped walking.
Jason was right. Going in now would only make Olivia feel worse.
He turned and walked away, his gaze cold as ice. If Windy and Mia were really behind this, he'd make them pay.
When Olivia woke up, it was already pitch black outside.
The ward was quiet, with only the beeping of machines. A dull pain throbbed in her arm, and her throat felt painfully dry.
"You're awake?" Jason's voice came from beside her, filled with obvious relief.
Olivia turned her head and saw Jason sitting by the bed, his eyes full of concern.
"Water..." She opened her mouth, her voice so hoarse it was barely audible.
Jason quickly poured a cup of warm water and used a cotton swab to moisten her lips. "Take it slow. You can't drink much right after waking up. Just wet your throat for now."
The moisture eased the dryness in her throat, and Olivia felt a bit better. Her eyes scanned the room, not seeing that familiar figure. A strange mix of relief and an indescribable sense of loss settled in her heart.
"I'm okay now?"
"You're okay for now, but you'll need a lot of rest going forward," Jason said, sitting beside her. "Your body is weaker than I thought. The abortion surgery has to be delayed. We need to wait until your lungs and burns are much better, or the risk is too high."
Olivia's heart sank.
Delay? She just wanted to get rid of this baby as soon as possible, to cut all ties with Luca and have nothing more to do with him.
"Can't it be sooner?" she pleaded.
"No," Jason shook his head. "Your body can't handle the stress of surgery right now. I'm not risking your life. And this baby..." Jason hesitated but didn't continue.
He had wanted to convince her to keep it, but knowing the situation between Olivia and Luca, he figured it was pointless to say anything.
Olivia closed her eyes, frustration filling her heart.
Why did nothing go her way? She couldn't get a divorce, couldn't have the surgery, and almost got burned to death.
"By the way, the police have sealed off the warehouse site. Mia ran off, but they've opened a case, and they'll catch her soon." Jason changed the subject, not wanting her to stress too much.
"What about Windy?" Olivia opened her eyes, her gaze turning cold.
"She's still in the hospital. I've got people looking into her, and we should have answers soon," Jason said.
Just then, the ward door swung open, and Emma rushed in. The moment she saw Olivia awake, tears streamed down her face.
"My baby! You're finally awake! You scared me to death!" Emma hurried to the bedside, gently holding Olivia's uninjured hand. "You have no idea how terrified I was when Jason called me! My heart nearly stopped! How could a warehouse just catch fire out of nowhere? Why were you even there?"
