Chapter 69 The New Assistant
Windy was furious inside as she watched Luca leave just like that. Luca wasn't like this before.
Whenever she brought up the fact that she had once saved his life, Luca would drop everything to be by her side, no matter how big the problem was. But now, not only did he let Lunis fire her, he even...
Windy clenched her right fist, her pale face slowly twisting in anger.
After leaving the hospital, Luca headed straight to the estate. As soon as he arrived at the entrance, the butler approached him with a calm expression and said, "Sir, Mr. Linus wants you in the study."
A bad feeling crept into Luca's heart, and he instinctively glanced toward the master bedroom. Could Olivia have told Grandpa about him taking Windy to the hospital?
Without overthinking, Luca hurried to the study. There, he saw Linus sitting in an armchair, leaning on his cane with a grim look on his face. As soon as Luca entered, Linus shot him a cold, piercing glare.
"Grandpa," Luca called softly.
"Hmph, you just took Windy to the hospital, didn't you?"
Luca didn't say anything, silently admitting it. Since Grandpa already knew, there was no point in hiding it.
"Olivia didn't tell me. I figured it out with my own head," Linus said, glaring at Luca with dissatisfaction. "Even if Windy saved your life, you can't forget that you have a wife. You always put Windy first—have you ever considered how others see her? Trust is everything in a marriage. But look at you—every time something happens with Windy, you freak out and pin it all on Olivia. Isn't that exactly what went down with this resignation mess? Luca, you're the company's heir. If you keep missing the forest for the trees, people are just gonna laugh at you."
Seeing the anger on Grandpa's face, Luca knew there was no point in arguing. But Grandpa was right—he had never really considered Olivia's feelings.
That day when Windy fell down the stairs, he rushed her to the hospital without a second thought for Olivia, leaving her alone to face everyone's accusations.
And then there was Olivia's resignation... He knew very well how much she had sacrificed for the company over the years. For her to even mention resigning must mean she was completely disappointed in his actions.
Luca lowered his gaze, his thoughts unreadable. After a moment, he nodded. "Grandpa, I understand."
Linus glanced at Luca sideways and let out a small huff. "I hope you really do. Olivia finally came back to the company this time. Don't let anything go wrong again."
Luca agreed and went straight back to his bedroom.
At that moment, Olivia was lying on the bed with her back to the door, unaware that Luca had come in.
Only when she felt the bed dip beside her did she frown slightly and instinctively move closer to the edge.
Sensing Olivia's distance, Luca felt a mix of emotions. He reached out, wanting to touch her, but in the end, he just sighed.
"I'm sorry," Luca said slowly after a long pause.
Olivia was taken aback. Since when did Luca ever apologize? What was wrong with him?
She waited for a while, but Luca didn't say anything else. Olivia mocked herself—what was she even expecting?
They didn't speak for the rest of the night. The next morning, Olivia went to the company as usual.
When she got to her office, she noticed her assistant wasn't there. Instead, there was a new face at her desk.
She felt a bit puzzled, but before she could ask, the person walked over with a bright smile. "Mrs. Vettel, hello! I'm Mia, your assistant's cousin. She had a family emergency and won't be able to come in for a few days. She knew this is a busy time, so she asked me to fill in for her temporarily."
With that, Mia handed over a file to Olivia. "Mrs. Vettel, my resume and work experience are all in this file. Feel free to take a look."
Olivia was a bit confused. "Why didn't she tell me about this?"
Mia's smile froze for a moment before softening again, her tone carrying a hint of helplessness. "She said you've been swamped with the international project relaunch and didn't want to bother you with something like this. She made sure I got up to speed quickly so I wouldn't cause any issues."
She paused, then added, "Oh, and Mrs. Vettel, I've already cleared everything with HR. All the paperwork's taken care of. If you'd like, I can forward you the confirmation email right now."
Olivia held the file, her fingers brushing over the rough paper, feeling even more uneasy.
Her assistant had been with her for three years and knew her work style inside out, always keeping her in the loop. Even if something happened at home, she wouldn't just quietly arrange for a replacement, especially not at such a crucial point in the project.
"What's her emergency?" Olivia looked up, her gaze calm as she stared at Mia.
Mia's eyes flickered for a second before she vaguely replied, "I'm not sure about the specifics. She didn't go into detail—just said it was urgent and asked me to step in for now."
Olivia didn't press further and quickly skimmed through the file. The resume looked impressive—graduated from a top school and has experience supporting large projects. It seemed like she could handle the job.
But for some reason, Olivia still felt something was off.
"Alright, you can stay for now and give it a try," Olivia said after thinking it over. It was better to keep her around for the moment. "Bring me the latest project status reports. And pull together the addendum from yesterday's meeting with the international Group. Get them to me." She closed the folder. "And just call me Olivia."
"Got it, Olivia!" Mia replied immediately and quickly left the office.
Olivia leaned back in her chair, her fingers lightly tapping the desk. She took out her phone and sent a message to her assistant, asking about her situation. Within two minutes, her assistant called back.
"Olivia! I'm so sorry!" Her assistant's voice came through, full of apology. "Something urgent came up at home, and I've been too busy to tell you. I'm really sorry!"
Olivia felt relieved and softened her tone. "As long as you're okay. How's everything? Do you need any help?"
"It's almost sorted out," her assistant said gratefully. "I know you're swamped with the international project right now, so I didn't want to bother you. I asked my cousin to step in for a few days. Once I'm done here, I'll be back at the company right away."
Olivia held the phone, her frown easing a little. Since her assistant had arranged it herself and HR had approved it, she decided to keep it like this for now. "Alright, focus on your business. Mia's covering for you here, so don't worry too much."
After hanging up, Olivia was about to look through the file when there was a knock on the door. Mia came in with a stack of documents and an eager smile. "Olivia, I've organized the reports and agreements you asked for."
Olivia was a bit surprised. Mia was pretty quick. It hadn't been long, and she was already on top of things.
She nodded and told Mia to put them on the desk. "Good job. If you keep this up, even after your cousin comes back, you can still stay at the company."
Mia's face lit up with excitement. "Really? Olivia, to be honest, I've always wanted to join this company, especially to work under you. I just never had the chance."
