Chapter 103 Worry
Olivia limped into the apartment building's hallway, her heart still pounding.
Afraid that Luca might suddenly catch up, she deliberately lingered there for a long time. Only when she figured Luca must have left did she finally step out, hail a taxi, and head home.
It wasn't until the taxi dropped her off that she let out a sigh of relief.
Her ankle was still throbbing faintly, the corner of her lip burned, and there were red marks on her wrist where Luca had grabbed her. If Jason saw her like this, he'd definitely ask what happened.
She pulled out her keys to unlock the door, but as soon as she pushed it open, she froze.
Jason was sitting on the couch in the living room, holding a document. The moment he saw her come in, he stood up. "Why are you so late? How's your ankle?"
Olivia's heart skipped a beat. She instinctively pulled her injured foot back a bit, forcing a calm expression. "It's fine. I just played a bit longer with Clara and got tired."
"Tired?" Jason's eyes landed on the corner of her lip, and his brows furrowed instantly. "What happened to your mouth? It's cut."
Olivia panicked and quickly raised her hand to cover her lip, her eyes darting away. "It's nothing. I just bumped into something."
"Bumped into something?" Jason clearly didn't buy it. He took a couple of steps closer, his tone filled with concern. "Did you hit it while playing, or did something else happen?"
He knew Olivia too well. She was never this vague. She was definitely hiding something.
Olivia stepped back, avoiding his gaze. "Really, it's just a clumsy accident. Don't overthink it."
She didn't want Jason to know about Luca. She didn't want him to worry. After all, Jason had already helped her so much, and she didn't want to burden him further.
Just then, the bedroom door swung open, and Leo ran out in his little bear pajamas, clutching a stuffed toy. "Mommy! You're back!"
The little boy rushed to Olivia, hugging her leg. He looked up and noticed her covering her mouth, asking curiously, "Mommy, what's wrong? Are you not feeling well?"
Olivia's heart softened as she looked at her son's innocent face. She bent down to pick him up. "Mommy's fine, just a bit tired."
Leo reached out his tiny hand, gently touching the corner of her lip, and whispered, "Mommy, does it hurt a lot?"
"It doesn't hurt." Olivia smiled and ruffled his hair. "Leo, you're so sweet, caring about Mommy like this."
Jason watched the scene and swallowed the questions he was about to ask. Since Leo was there, he didn't want to press too much and make the kid worry.
So he changed the topic. "I came over today to talk about Leo's school enrollment."
"Enrollment?" Olivia blinked, caught off guard.
"Yeah, he can start next Monday." Jason handed her the document. "I've taken care of most of the paperwork. Take a look, and if everything's okay, we can go tomorrow to finish up the rest."
Olivia took the papers, her heart filled with gratitude. "Jason, thank you so much. You always think of everything."
Over the years, without Jason, she really didn't know how she would've managed raising Leo.
"No need to thank me." Jason smiled. "It's getting late. How about I stay and make dinner for you guys?"
Olivia nodded quickly. "Sure, I'm too lazy to cook anyway."
Leo cheered, "Yay! I want Jason's mac and cheese!"
"No problem." Jason patted his head and headed to the kitchen.
Just then, Jason's phone rang.
He wiped his hands and pulled the phone from his pocket. Seeing the caller ID, his expression shifted slightly.
"I'll take this call," he said to Olivia, stepping out onto the balcony to answer.
Not long after, Jason hung up and came back inside, his tone apologetic. "Sorry, there's an emergency surgery at the hospital. I have to go right now."
"So urgent?" Olivia stood up. "Then hurry, don't delay."
"Yeah." Jason nodded and looked at Leo. "Leo, I'll make mac and cheese for you next time, okay?"
Leo looked a bit disappointed but nodded sensibly. "Okay, bye, Jason. Be safe."
Jason smiled and turned to Olivia. "I'll contact you tomorrow about the enrollment. Call me if anything comes up."
"Got it. Be careful on the road." Olivia walked him to the door.
Watching Jason's hurried figure disappear, Olivia felt a pang of guilt. She had wanted him to stay for a proper meal, but work got in the way again.
She closed the door and turned to pick up Leo. "Sweetie, how about Mommy makes you some spaghetti?"
"Yes!" Leo instantly cheered up.
Meanwhile, on his way to the hospital, Jason called his assistant. "Check who else was at the golf course with Clara today, besides Olivia."
"Understood," the assistant replied promptly.
Jason hung up, his brows tightly knit.
Olivia's condition was definitely not just from a simple bump. He had a gut feeling something was off, especially with the injury on her lip—it looked more like someone had forced it on her.
He had to find out who hurt Olivia.
At the hospital, Jason dove straight into the surgery. By the time it was over, it was already late at night.
Exhausted, he sat in his office, taking a sip of water when his assistant called.
"Sir, I've got the info. Besides Olivia and Clara, Luca from Vettel Group was at the golf course today."
Jason's eyes turned cold instantly. "Luca? What was he doing there?"
"Apparently, he was discussing a partnership with Clara. But a staff member mentioned seeing him and Olivia in the lounge for a long time. No one knows exactly what happened," the assistant added.
Jason's fist clenched hard, his knuckles turning white.
It was Luca, as he suspected!
He knew Olivia's injury had to be connected to him.
It had been five years since their divorce. Why was Luca still bothering Olivia?
Did he want to get back with her?
The thought irritated Jason. He couldn't let Luca hurt Olivia and Leo.
"Dig deeper. Find out what Luca has been up to these past five years and how things are between him and Windy," Jason said, his voice icy.
"Got it. I'll look into it right away."
After hanging up, Jason leaned back in his chair, his gaze deep and serious.
He couldn't wait any longer. He needed to propose to Olivia soon, to give her and Leo a stable home and keep Luca away for good.
Meanwhile, Olivia had finished making spaghetti for Leo. The mother and son were sitting at the dining table, eating.
Leo twirled his fork in the noodles and said, "Mommy, will the kids at kindergarten make fun of me for not having a dad?"
Olivia's hand paused mid-air, a wave of sadness hitting her.
She put down her fork and gently touched Leo's head. "They won't. You're so lovable, everyone will like you."
"But I see other kids getting picked up by their dads. I want a dad too," Leo said, his voice tinged with sadness.
Olivia's heart ached as if pricked by a needle.
She knew Leo had always longed for a father. Over the years, she had carefully avoided this topic, but now he had brought it up himself.
