The son who got exposed

It seemed that while she was fighting for her inheritance, her unlucky son had fallen deep into the enemy's schemes. If not for Agent Z and Carol rescuing him in time, her other son might not be alive now.

"What happened?" she asked. Although she didn't want outsiders to know about her personal affairs, given Agent Z's intelligence and Carol's care for Sham's twin, she wasn't surprised that Agent Z had called to inform her of the dire situation.

There was a long pause on the other end before he answered, "When I recovered, I went back to the syndicate's lair and happened to overhear them discussing a certain boy's condition. It seems that while the boy was operating on the streets, a car hit him."

Jenica's forehead creased. What Agent Z meant by "operating on the streets" likely referred to him begging on the streets.

"Where is he now?"

"They rushed him to the hospital, but I don't think they'll be willing to spend a large sum on his surgery."

Jenica clenched her fists. She took a deep breath to steady her emotions before thinking things through. It seemed the syndicate had another use for her son, or else they wouldn't have bothered to take him to a hospital. But what was it?

"I heard that he has a rare blood type, and the blood bank has no reserves," Agent Z added.

"Tell me the hospital's address."

A few hours later, Jenica entered the emergency room and found a pale young boy lying on the farthest bed. She strode toward him and stopped at the foot of his bed.

"Sorry I'm l-late," she whispered as she moved closer to her son.

He was unconscious and badly injured. Jenica felt a pang of sadness. Her son wasn't like this the last time she saw him, and it made her want to take the lives of those behind the syndicate.

"He really is your son, Agent J," a voice said from behind her.

Even without looking back, Jenica knew that Agent Z was staring at the back of her head with a deep gaze. She sighed. When she saw Carol with Agent Z in that forest, she knew this day would come. She couldn't hide anything from HQ's top agent.

She turned around to face the man. "Why are you here? I thought you wouldn't do anything to alarm the enemy. What is this?"

A small smile played on Agent Z's lips. How condescending!

He squinted. "I have new leads. This syndicate is just a front for the real mastermind." He moved closer to the hospital bed and looked at her unconscious son. "I discovered an underground connection to this case. And you know exactly who they are."

Of course. It was none other than the Mafia-the very people agents like her wanted to avoid facing.

"And what about Jared?" she asked.

There was a sudden pause as Agent Z gave her a meaningful look. "Didn't you just befriend the HQ's enemy?"

Jenica's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"

"It's too late to deny it, Agent. I saw you talking with Jared at Fuego's party. And if I'm not mistaken, Jared and Alexander Fuego are close friends."

Jenica suppressed her shock. If he knew, that meant he had attended the party too. But how did he recognize Jared?

Agent Z chuckled at her stunned expression. "Cat got your tongue, Agent?" he teased.

Jenica scowled. "Why don't you report it to HQ then?"

She was confident that Agent Z hadn't informed HQ about what he saw. Otherwise, she would have already received a notice from her assistant.

"Well..." An uncomfortable look flashed in his eyes, making her wonder for a moment. He looked away. "I found out that HQ might be hiding something."

"What?" She frowned.

"Forget it. You wouldn't understand even if I told you," he said before walking away. "You must call your husband, or your child will die. I'll take care of Carol for now," he added before disappearing.

Jenica's gaze darkened.

She went to the ward to ask about her son's condition. He needed surgery, but they required a lot of blood for the operation. However, neither she nor Sham's twin had a compatible blood type.

Suddenly, her phone rang. Carol was calling.

"Jen? How's Totoy?"

"Totoy?"

"Sham's twin. That hateful man said the boy was in an accident. How is he?"

Jenica pursed her lips. "Not good. He needs a blood transfusion, but we're not compatible."

"If you can't, then call your scumbag husband. He might be of help!"

She sighed. That was what she had planned to do before Carol called. "Where are you staying now?" she asked while walking to a secluded area.

"Still at this hateful man's house. He told me not to wander outside for the next three months."

"Okay, just listen to him. I'll call you again," Jenica said.

"Alright. Please let me know if I can help with anything."

"Okay."

She ended the call and called Alex. He tried to argue with her, but Jenica didn't waste any more time. "Meet me at *** hospital. Someone needs your blood."

Not long after, she saw Alex making his way toward her. "What was that call about? Who needs my blood?"

She gazed at him for a moment before gesturing for him to follow. Jenica asked him for a blood sample, and although confused, Alex didn't say anything and allowed the nurse to take one.

"You still haven't told me what this is about," Alex said while waiting for the results.

Jenica looked at him. "I didn't want to ask for your help, but for the sake of my son's life, I called you."

"Son?" Alex frowned. "Sham?"

"No." She looked away. "That year, it wasn't just Sham. I gave birth to twins."

Then she recalled what happened five years ago. Alex was too stunned to speak. After a few moments, he reached out and hugged her. "I'm sorry," he whispered.

Jenica felt nothing special about his apology. She knew he regretted it, but would that change anything?

"Miss, the results are out," a nurse called.

They went to get the results, and after determining that Alex's blood was a match for the transfusion, they didn't waste any time and prepared for the operation.

The procedure lasted four long hours, with Alex bleeding for the last two. The doctor advised that he be confined overnight for observation.

Now, Jenica had to take care of two people-a child and a man. Since she was the family member of both, the doctor allowed them to stay in a private room together. It was spacious enough, so she didn't say anything.

Alex's assistant approached her and said, "Mrs. Fuego, I have settled the hospital bill."

"Okay."

Then she spent the whole night taking care of them.

Unbeknownst to her, Shimen had sent someone to track her whereabouts and learned that Sham's twin had survived that cold night.

Shimen was silent for a moment before gesturing for his assistant to continue.

"The operation was successful, and Ms. Guam is staying in the hospital with Mr. Fuego."

His eyes narrowed, and his fist clenched and unclenched. A sharp pain shot through his chest, but he ignored it.

"Has Father received the partnership contract?"

"Yes, but I intercepted it. Your father received a copy, and here's the original document," the assistant said, handing him a folder containing the contract.

As he expected, Jenica had clearly stated that their marriage would last only six months. After that, they would divorce.

Shimen lowered his gaze, his expression unreadable.
