Chapter 57: Suspicious Uncle
Uncle Marc furrowed his brows but didn't say a word. Even Shimen remained silent. The people inside exchanged glances and decided to keep quiet as well.
Jenica nodded and grinned a little. She now realized that no one in this group of wolves in sheep's clothing could be trusted. Even her Uncle Marc was hiding something from her. Now, she just wanted to use her new identity as the CEO of Guam Business Empire to find her son.
Looking at Shimen, she squinted her eyes. "Send me the marriage contract, and I will send a partnership contract to your father." She clicked her tongue. "That father of yours is someone I can't afford to offend, huh? He didn't even attend this welcome meeting."
Shimen sighed. "I'm sorry. He's sick and has been recuperating at the hospital."
"I see." She nodded. "Send my regards to him then, and to your mother."
"I will."
With that, Jenica exited the conference room, leaving her Uncle Marc with the board of directors. Shimen stood and smiled as he looked at him. "See you around, Mr. Guam." He then stepped out of the room and walked after Jenica.
The other members looked at each other and bid their goodbyes one by one. Only Uncle Marc and a man who had not spoken earlier were left inside.
"That niece of yours is a stumbling block," the man said, puffing out a cloud of smoke from his cigarette. "You need to rein in that wild lass, Marc Guam."
Uncle Marc squinted his eyes and looked at him. "Why are you back? Didn't I tell you not to enter Guam Empire's territory for the next three years?"
The man scoffed and stood up. "I'll go back underground and wait for your return. But looking at your hardheaded niece, I guess you have a lot of work to do. Three years might not be enough."
Uncle Marc smirked. "She's just a kid with no parents to rely on. You, on the other hand, are starting to rebel against me. Or have you forgotten your place?"
The man pursed his lips and walked toward the door, disappearing without a word. Uncle Marc furrowed his brows and clenched his fists. He would never let the Takuras get the upper hand, especially that Shimen!
His blood boiled even more as he recalled Shimen's arrogant smirk during the meeting. The Takura father and son were a huge obstacle to his plans!
"Jenica, don't disappoint your uncle," he murmured with a meaningful smile.
Meanwhile, Shimen found Jenica standing on the balcony, gazing into the distance. When he followed her line of sight, he realized she was looking in the direction of the city. If he wasn't mistaken, Alexander Fuego had something to do with whatever was on her mind.
A small pang hit his chest, but he ignored it. He stood beside her, cleared his throat, and looked her way. "What's your plan now?" he asked.
Jenica was silent for a few minutes before speaking. "I've already asked someone to make preparations for the upcoming wedding."
Shimen looked surprised but smiled a little. "You're not excited, are you? I haven't even notified my father about our marriage."
Jenica looked at him. "We'll be married on paper only," she said. "Once I get my inheritance, I'll divorce you so you can keep your freedom."
He was at a loss for words, but he had no choice but to agree. In the first place, he knew Jenica harbored no special feelings for him. He sighed. What a cruel fate.
A moment later, his father's secretary called him. He spoke with his father for a while and asked someone to draft a marriage contract for him and Jenica.
Meanwhile, Jenica remembered that she already had a marriage contract with Alexander Fuego. So she excused herself for a while and contacted her so-called husband.
"Who is this?" Alex asked on the other end of the line.
Jenica furrowed her brows. It felt as if she only called the man when she needed something. Well, the last time she saw him was when assassins were chasing them down. She wasn't heartless enough not to ask about his condition, right?
She cleared her throat. "It's me. Did you dispose of those bastards?" she asked, referring to the assassins who had pursued them before.
Alex was silent for a moment before he replied, "I've sent them to their graves. Where are you?"
"It doesn't matter where I am." Jenica squinted her eyes. "I called to let you know that divorce papers will be sent to your office. I need you to sign them and send me a copy."
"After I saved your little ass, you have the guts to divorce me?" Alex asked in disbelief. His voice was full of sarcasm.
"Saved me?" Jenica frowned. "I was the one who saved myself."
"What a brat," Alex muttered, loud enough for her to hear.
She smirked. "Your people won't accept me as your wife, and I don't want to mingle with your hypocrite family members. In other words, I don't want to be your trophy wife. Since you're healed now and I don't need your money anymore, let's get a divorce."
"After using me, you're just going to throw me away? Has no one told you that you're one in a hundred heartless woman?"
"I've heard worse." She chuckled. "Even if you don't sign the divorce papers, I have a way to make you. So don't test my patience," she warned.
"You've really changed, wife."
"Don't make me laugh. You're the one who completely changed a hundred and eighty degrees."
Alex chuckled. "I wonder what you'll do if I burn the divorce papers?"
Before Jenica could respond, Alex ended the call. She cursed. What a jerk!
After the call, she went inside the CEO's office-her office now-and drafted a partnership contract. It included clauses about the limitations of her marriage with Shimen. After all, Shimen had been her friend and protector when she was helpless, and she didn't want to shackle him in marriage.
She only needed six months of marriage to officially own the Guam Business Empire. That was enough time for her to use all means necessary to find her son.
Suddenly, her phone rang. When she saw the caller ID, her brows furrowed. It was an unknown number, but she knew who it belonged to. She answered the call.
"Agent Z, why have you called?" she whispered.
"Your son is dying."
Jenica shot to her feet. "What did you say?"
