Chapter 138 – Queen of Shadows
Chapter 138 – Queen of Shadows
Morgana's POV
Oh, the sweet silence and their bond flickered again, tenuous and frail, and I felt it run through me like strands of silk being pulled asunder. The Alpha's terror sluiced off him in waves and I drank it in like a desiccated wolf savoring blood for the first time in ages.
Poor battered Trinity fought from inside but her little fists against my cell barely left a scratch. She was a bird in a cage, flapping wildly as I opened her wings to make my own escape.
Nasir's amber eyes burned with wild rage. He shook the body we shared, like Trinity would somehow reappear if he shook her hard enough Dumb man.
I nipped her lips into a sneer "That vacancy in your eyes suits you, Alpha. Does it hurt losing her piece by piece?"
His grip on my wrists grew tighter "You won't win cos she's stronger than you think"
I laughed a laugh that sounded in the room like breaking glass "Stronger? Oh, I've enjoyed her strength. Bitter, sweet, twisted with fear and that girl is drowning in self-doubt and I am the rope she grabbed without even realizing it. Do you know what happens when someone clings too tightly to the darkness, Alpha?"
His jaw clenched "They find the light" he responded.
"Wrong" I yanked my lips against his ear, breathing with poison-laced breath "They become the dark"
He tried to push me away but it just made me laugh harder. Every time his wolf bristled, every time his pulse thudded, it only worked to prove my win.
"You don't intimidate me," he said, growling.
"Liar" I said softly "You're trembling not because you're intimidated by me but because you're intimidated by the truth"
He went still and his silence was my triumph.
I leaned in once more, her lips tracing the edge of his jaw "You waited all of your life for her and for the pale, wolfless girl you thought you could save. Tell me Nasir, what will you be when she's dead? Who would you be without the tether you swore made you whole?" i asked
His wolf rumbled in the depths of him, vibrating his chest like thunder. He bared his teeth, snarling but I could see the uncertainty, the crack and the Alpha was strong but grief reduced even the mightiest to their knees.
Within me, Trinity screamed. She hurled herself at me in desperation, fury. Let me go, you witch! Her voice shook but it was barely audible, even to me.
I smiled to myself, sad guy.... he can't even hear you anymore.
Nasir pushed me back against the wall, pinning the body in place, amber eyes burning through me "I'll get her back" he promised, his deep voice rough "Even if i have to rip you out by bare hands"
"Mmm" I rotated her head, relishing the tension in his voice "I almost wish i would let you attempt it. Imagine how fine it would be, your claws burying themselves in flesh, your wolf ravaging the very girl you swore to protect and the guilt would kill you before I ever have the opportunity."
The crack in his heart expanded and I felt it.
I pushed my hand against his chest, where his heart pounded on the skin "This is mine now" I panted "Each breath she breathes belongs to me. Each scream, each moan and each tear are mine. Trinity Romano is gone and only Morgana is left, "I said.
His eyes snapped open wide but I didn't let him speak as I let the darkness uncurl from my fingertips, embracing his chest and shoulders with living tendrils and the black flame spat as it whipped across his flesh, burning without consuming, tearing at the edges of his soul.
He gasped, gritted his teeth but would not yield. That stupid strength enraged and fascinated me.
"Submit" I panted, pushing harder.
"Never" he snarled, the growl of his wolf shaking the air.
Quiet met for a moment, broken only by the grating rasp of our respirations and then oh, that most sweet of sounds. The mate bond strengthened once again. Frayed, shattered and so close to snapping.
I wet my lips with the flavor of fear under his fury "She's coming apart, Nasir. Can you feel it? The warmth leaking out and the threads coming loose?"
He clenched his fists so hard his knuckles whitened "I'll kill you first" he said.
"Then you'll kill her" I snapped back, a grin spreading across my face "That's the beauty of it, Alpha. All the blows you strike against me cut deeper into her. All the attempts to rescue her push her further towards destruction."
He gasped for air and I had him. His wolf growled beneath the surface, torn between love and rage and unable to move without jeopardizing her.
Inside, Trinity wept in despair but faintly, less fiercely than before, her strength was fading.
Perfect.... i drew closer with a cruel smile “This is the end of your bond of her, of you and when it snaps, i’ll wear her body like a crown and the entire kingdom will kneel”
He snarled, deadly and low but I stilled him with a hiss of darkness spiraling tighter "What are you going to do, Alpha? Tear me in two and damn her or just watch while I dismantle her piece by piece?" i asked
He paused for a heartbeat and that was when I attacked.
I lifted her hand, black flames curling around the fingers, hungry to plunge straight into his chest, not to kill him, no but to drain him out and to empty him until only anger and desperation remained.
And then I would break him, too but before the flames sprang to life, something shifted.
A noise that was quiet, gentle and delicate.
From very far away, Trinity spoke not to me but through me and her power exploded in one shattering note.
Nasir, stay with me.
The bond reappeared, tenuous but undeniable and for the first time in centuries, I felt a tremor of fear.
Morgana is close enough to snatch Nasir, wallowing in his desperation but then Trinity's voice interrupts, reigniting their bond and Morgana feels fear creeping in for the first time.
