Chapter 121 – A Tangled Lie
Chapter 121 – A Tangled Lie
Trinity's POV
My eyes widened in panic as Nasir's piercing gaze fixed on me, and my mind raced frantically trying to figure out exactly how much of our conversation he'd heard.
The way he was looking at me—like a predator who'd just cornered his prey—suggested he'd heard enough to be suspicious.
I opened my mouth to speak, to offer some kind of explanation or deflection, but nothing came out. My throat felt dry as sandpaper, and I could practically feel the guilt radiating off me in waves.
Oh, Goddess!
I was a terrible liar under the best of circumstances, and these were definitely not the best of circumstances.
What was I supposed to do? How could I possibly explain away what he'd overheard without revealing the truth about the hex?
"Well, since you're here and you're demanding to know," Lily said suddenly, her voice remarkably steady despite the panic I could see in her eyes, "Trinity wanted me to teach her all the recipes for your favorite meals."
I quickly plastered what I hoped was a convincing smile on my face, nodding enthusiastically to back up Lily's improvised lie. "That's right," I said, my voice coming out slightly higher than normal. "I thought... you know, it might be nice to learn how to cook things you guys actually enjoy eating."
Nasir raised an eyebrow, his expression clearly skeptical as his gaze moved between Lily and me. The silence stretched uncomfortably long as he studied our faces, looking for cracks in our story.
"Then why are you trying to keep it a secret?" he asked finally, his tone deceptively casual but with an undercurrent that suggested he wasn't buying our explanation for a second.
My mind went blank for a terrifying moment before desperation kicked in and gave me words. "Um... because everyone is against me being your mate," I said, the partial truth making the lie easier to sell. "And..." I paused, racking my brain for something believable. "My cousins will never let me do that successfully."
It wasn't entirely untrue—the Silvershade sisters would probably find some way to sabotage any attempt I made at domestic gestures toward the triplets. They'd see it as me trying too hard to secure my position or something equally petty.
"They'd probably tell me I was wasting my time," I continued, gaining confidence as the lie became more elaborate. "Or they'd somehow interfere with my cooking lessons just to mess with me. You know how they are."
I raised my eyes to meet his, trying to project innocence and calm even though my heart was hammering against my ribs.
"Are you lying to me?" he asked directly, his amber eyes searching my face with uncomfortable intensity.
The question hung in the air between us like a challenge. But admitting to the lie would open up questions I wasn't prepared to answer.
"Why would I lie to you?" I asked instead, deflecting with a question of my own.
"That's what I'm trying to figure out," he said, reaching out to brush a strand of hair away from my face. The gentle gesture contrasted sharply with the steel in his voice. "Because the Trinity I know doesn't usually go to such lengths to hide cooking lessons from her mates."
The word 'mates' sent a shiver through me, reminding me of the complicated bond between us that made these deceptions feel even more wrong.
"Maybe the Trinity you know is trying to surprise you for once," I said, attempting a playful tone that fell flat in the charged atmosphere of the room.
"Maybe," he conceded, but his expression remained skeptical. "Or maybe she's keeping secrets that could put her in danger."
The accuracy of that statement made my blood run cold. How could he possibly know?
"You know I wouldn’t do that," I said, but that was exactly what I was doing.
"Are you sure?" he asked, stepping even closer so that we were barely a foot apart. "Because from where I'm standing, it looks like you're terrified of something, and you're trying to handle it alone instead of trusting your mates to help you."
The concern in his voice, barely hidden beneath the Alpha authority, almost broke my resolve.
Part of me wanted to tell him everything—about the hex, about my fears, about the growing certainty that I was in over my head.
But the larger part of me remembered what Lily had said about the dangers of corrupted power, about the potential for me to hurt innocent people if this went wrong.
"I'm not terrified," I lied. "I'm just... trying to do something nice for you."
Nasir made a noncommittal humming sound, his amber eyes still examining me closely. I could practically see the wheels turning in his head as he weighed our explanation against whatever suspicions he'd formed.
"Hmm," he said finally, then he turned his attention to Lily. "Excuse us," he said, his voice carrying clear dismissal. "I want to talk to Trinity alone."
Lily bowed to him respectfully. "Of course, Alpha," she said, then turned to me with an apologetic look that conveyed both regret for having to leave me and concern for what might happen after she was gone.
"I'll bring your dinner up later," she offered.
"No need to do that," Nasir said before I could respond. "She'll be dining with us tonight."
What?!
The casual way he announced this decision—like it was already settled and I had no say in the matter—sent a jolt of surprise through me.
Dining with all three triplets after everything that had happened between us? After the steamy incident in my room, and even now, all the secrets I was now keeping from them?
"I will?" I asked, my voice coming out smaller than I intended.
"Yes, you will," Nasir replied, his tone making room for no argument. "We have things to discuss, and it's been too long since we've all sat down together for a proper meal."
