Chapter 401
Chapter 401
Activation did not feel like power.
It felt like being recognized.
Sapphire screamed as the bond tightened to a point beyond pain, beyond sensation, beyond anything human. The connection between her and Dimitri no longer behaved like a tether or a bridge. It became a conduit. A channel forced open by something that had waited centuries for a moment like this.
The chamber beneath the fortress howled.
Not with sound, but with strain.
Stone warped. Light bent. Gravity itself seemed to hesitate, uncertain which way it should pull. Sapphire’s body lifted an inch off the floor before slamming back down, breath tearing from her lungs as the presence surged again.
She clawed at the stone, fingers scraping raw.
“No no no,” she sobbed. “This isn’t what you want. This isn’t how you survive.”
The presence did not answer.
It no longer needed to.
Above, Dimitri felt the world tilt violently as the floor beneath him cracked open in a web of blinding fractures. He braced himself on instinct, boots skidding as the chamber tried to tear itself apart around him.
The light surged upward again, brighter now, thicker, almost viscous in the way it moved. It wrapped around his legs like fog made of intent, crawling up his body with unnatural awareness.
Michael shouted something behind him, but the words were swallowed by the roar of collapsing stone.
Dimitri’s teeth bared as he forced himself forward one step at a time, muscles screaming as the pressure fought him at every inch.
“I see you,” he snarled into the void. “You don’t scare me.”
The response came instantly.
The pressure slammed into his chest like a sledgehammer, driving him back down to one knee. His vision blurred, stars bursting behind his eyes as pain exploded through his ribs.
Not injury.
Assessment.
It was measuring him.
Judging him.
Below, Sapphire felt that scrutiny like a knife against her spine.
“Stop looking at him,” she cried. “He is not yours.”
The presence shifted.
Not away.
Closer.
Her head snapped back as a wave of memories she did not recognize flooded her mind. Cities reduced to silence. Bloodlines erased. Empires built on bones. The cycle repeating endlessly, always ending the same way.
Collapse.
Consumption.
Reset.
You end things, the presence pressed into her thoughts. He continues them.
Sapphire shook violently, tears streaming down her face. “He protects. He builds. He chooses.”
The pressure tightened again, colder now.
He defies inevitability.
“And so do I,” she screamed back.
The light beneath her surged violently, reacting not with rejection but friction. The chamber shook so hard she was thrown sideways, slamming into the wall with a cry of pain.
Something cracked inside her shoulder.
She barely felt it.
Because the bond flared again, brighter, sharper, pulling her attention upward.
Dimitri.
She could see him now.
Not physically.
Through the bond.
Through the conduit they had become.
She saw him through the presence’s perception — not as a man, but as a force of resistance. A fixed point in a system designed to erase resistance entirely.
And the thing beneath the fortress hated him for it.
Above, Dimitri dragged himself upright again, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. His breathing was ragged, chest burning as the pressure increased.
He looked down at the glowing fractures beneath his feet and understood something with brutal clarity.
It wasn’t trying to kill him.
It was trying to anchor itself.
Through him.
Through Sapphire.
Through their bond.
“You don’t get to use us,” he growled.
The light surged in response, climbing higher, wrapping around his torso now, pressing against his heart with suffocating force.
Michael lunged forward again, gun raised, fury and fear warring on his face.
“Dimitri—get back!”
Dimitri didn’t look away from the glow.
“Don’t,” he said sharply. “You’ll make it worse.”
Michael froze, hands shaking.
Below, Sapphire screamed as the pressure suddenly reversed direction.
The pull intensified.
Upward.
Toward Dimitri.
Her body lifted off the ground again, chains of invisible force tightening around her limbs as she was dragged toward the widening fissure above.
“No!” she cried, clawing at the air as the chamber screamed around her. “Dimitri—!”
He felt it.
The moment the pull shifted.
The bond flared violently, nearly dropping him as the pressure doubled, trying to lock them into alignment.
He dug his heels in, muscles locking, every instinct screaming at him to hold.
“I’ve got you,” he roared into the bond. “I will not let go.”
The presence surged between them, furious now, no longer calculating.
The light flared blindingly bright.
The fortress began to fail catastrophically.
Walls collapsed. Support columns snapped. Alarms screamed uselessly as the structure finally gave in to forces it was never meant to withstand.
Above ground, the city felt it.
A deep, unnatural tremor rippled outward, shattering windows, rattling buildings, sending people into the streets in terror as the ground groaned beneath them.
Below, Sapphire was screaming Dimitri’s name as she was dragged closer to the fissure, the air tearing past her as gravity lost all meaning.
Her fingers brushed stone.
Then air.
Then light.
She saw him clearly now through the widening fracture, framed by falling debris and blinding glow, bloodied and unyielding.
Their bond burned white-hot.
And then the presence made its move.
The pressure surged violently upward, focusing entirely on Dimitri, wrapping around his chest, his spine, his heart.
Anchoring.
Claiming.
Dimitri’s vision went white as pain detonated through him, raw and consuming. His body arched involuntarily as the force locked onto him fully.
Below, Sapphire felt it lock in place.
“No,” she screamed, voice breaking. “Take me instead. Take me—”
The presence ignored her.
It had made its choice.
The light surged.
The bond screamed.
And Dimitri cried out as something ancient and vast reached fully through Sapphire—
And closed its grip on him.
