Chapter 400

Chapter 400
The doorway was never meant to be opened from the inside.

Sapphire felt that truth settle into her bones as the ground beneath her continued to fracture, each tremor sharper than the last. The presence below no longer pressed against her mind the way it had before. It had withdrawn just enough to move.

To aim.

The chamber groaned as if the earth itself were bracing for impact. The markings on the floor, ancient and worn, began to crumble entirely, flaking away like ash under invisible pressure.

She backed away slowly, breath shallow, heart hammering so hard it hurt.

“No,” she whispered. “You don’t get him.”

The response was immediate.

The fissure widened violently, stone tearing apart with a deafening crack as something vast shifted beneath the surface. Not rising. Not yet.

Aligning.

Sapphire staggered as a shockwave slammed through the chamber, throwing her to one knee. Pain lanced up her leg, but she barely noticed. Her focus locked on the sensation ripping through her chest.

The bond.

It flared sharply, violently, like a live wire dragged across exposed nerves.

Dimitri.

He felt it too.

Above ground, Dimitri skidded to a halt as the pressure slammed into him from nowhere, knocking the breath from his lungs. He braced himself against the corridor wall as dust and debris rained down around him, ears ringing.

Not pain.

Intent.

Something had locked onto him.

Michael turned sharply. “Boss—what the hell was that?”

Dimitri straightened slowly, eyes darkening as the bond surged again, clearer now, sharper.

“It’s using her,” he said flatly. “Not as a vessel.”

He started forward again, faster now, ignoring the collapsing structure around them.

“As a vector.”

The realization hit him like ice.

It wasn’t trying to claim Sapphire.

It was reaching through her.

Below, Sapphire screamed as the pressure intensified suddenly, violently. The air thickened, crushing against her chest, forcing the breath from her lungs. She clawed at the stone, gasping, vision blurring as the presence surged upward in a wave of raw force.

Images flooded her mind unbidden.

Dimitri standing alone amid fire and blood.

A city skyline fracturing.

Concrete splitting.

People screaming.

She shook her head violently, sobbing as she fought to push the images away.

“Stop,” she choked. “I won’t let you do this.”

You already have, the presence replied coldly. By surviving.

The fissure pulsed brightly, light flaring through the cracks as energy surged upward like a current finally completing its circuit.

Sapphire cried out as the force slammed into her chest, driving her back against the wall hard enough to rattle her teeth. She slid down, gasping, hands shaking uncontrollably.

Her vision swam.

And then—

Silence.

Not absence.

Containment.

The pressure vanished abruptly, leaving her disoriented, breathless, heart racing in the sudden stillness.

She lifted her head slowly, dread pooling in her stomach.

The fissure had stopped expanding.

The chamber had gone eerily quiet.

The presence was no longer pushing.

It was listening.

Sapphire’s blood ran cold.

“You found him,” she whispered.

The air shifted in response.

Above, Dimitri burst through the final reinforced barrier into a vast open chamber, skidding to a stop as the floor beneath his feet lit faintly with fractured lines of pale light.

He felt it immediately.

Not Sapphire’s pain.

Her proximity.

“She’s here,” he said hoarsely.

Michael stared at the glowing floor. “This place is wrong.”

Dimitri took a step forward—and froze.

The bond surged violently, not pulling him toward Sapphire, but anchoring him in place with brutal force.

He clenched his jaw, muscles tensing as he tried to move again.

His foot would not lift.

“What the hell—” Michael started.

The floor beneath Dimitri pulsed once.

Then again.

Far below, Sapphire screamed as the presence surged outward, not upward this time, but through the connection she had never been able to sever.

“No!” she cried, clawing at the wall as panic tore through her. “You said you needed me—”

I needed a path, the presence replied. You were sufficient.

The bond ignited like a fuse.

Dimitri roared as pain exploded through his chest, dropping him hard to one knee. His vision blurred, teeth gritting as he fought the invisible force pinning him in place.

Michael lunged forward. “Dimitri!”

“Stay back!” Dimitri snapped through clenched teeth.

The light beneath him flared brighter.

Below, Sapphire felt it happen.

Felt the bond twist.

Not breaking.

Redirecting.

She sobbed openly now, terror finally overwhelming her control.

“Please,” she whispered into the connection. “Don’t fight it. You’ll die.”

Dimitri dragged in a harsh breath, forcing himself upright inch by inch as the pressure bore down on him.

“You think,” he growled, “I care about that?”

The floor cracked violently beneath his feet.

Below, the chamber shook as the fissure split wider than before, no longer contained by old markings or stone. Light poured upward like a rising tide, illuminating the chamber in blinding brilliance.

Sapphire screamed as the presence surged again, closer than ever, no longer restrained by distance or containment.

It was here.

Not whole.

But enough.

The ceiling above Dimitri’s chamber fractured sharply.

Stone gave way.

And through the collapsing floor, Dimitri saw it.

Not a body.

Not a face.

A shape of light and depth and intention, stretching upward from the abyss below, reaching through Sapphire’s bond toward him.

Sapphire looked up through tears and saw him too, framed in falling debris and blinding glow.

Their eyes met across impossible distance.

Across stone.

Across force.

Across choice.

“Dimitri—run!” she screamed.

He didn’t move.

He lifted his head slowly, eyes locked on her, fury and resolve burning through the pain.

“I’m not leaving you,” he said.

The presence surged violently between them.

And the bond snapped tight—

Not breaking.

Not bending.

Activating.
