Chapter 95 THE QUESTION NO ALPHA HAD ASKED

Chapter 95 THE QUESTION NO ALPHA HAD ASKED

Morning sunlight filtered through the branches of the ancient ash trees, casting shifting patterns across the stone circle.
No one had hurried to leave.
That surprised Ciara.
Most councils ended the moment decisions were made. Leaders returned to their territories eager to protect what was theirs.
This gathering was different.
No one seemed eager to speak first.
Or to leave.
Rowan broke the silence.
"I've spent thirty years believing an Alpha must always have the answer."
He looked around the circle.
"I no longer think that's true."
The admission drew quiet nods from the others.
The youngest Alpha rubbed the back of his neck.
"If I don't have every answer," he said, "won't they lose confidence in me?"
Ciara met his gaze.
"Or will they finally have room to find answers with you?"
The question lingered in the cool morning air.

Another Alpha leaned forward.
"What happens when wolves disagree?"
Levion answered before Ciara could.
"They already do."
The Alpha frowned.
"I mean seriously."
Levion smiled slightly.
"So do I."
A few of the leaders laughed.
He continued, his expression growing thoughtful.
"I used to believe disagreement weakened a pack."
He glanced at Ciara.
"I've learned that silence weakens it far more."
The laughter faded into thoughtful quiet.

Rowan rested both hands on the weathered stone.
"My warriors have begun speaking more openly."
He looked almost bewildered.
"They challenge ideas now."
"Were they disrespectful?" Ciara asked.
He considered it carefully.
"No."
"They simply... asked why."
Ciara smiled.
"And how did that feel?"
He gave a dry chuckle.
"Uncomfortable."
Another Alpha laughed.
"I thought I was the only one."
Soon the circle was filled with quiet laughter.
Not mocking.
Relieved.
Each of them had experienced the same thing.
Each had thought they were facing it alone.

Zayn had remained mostly silent throughout the council.
Now he finally spoke.
"May I ask all of you something?"
Five pairs of eyes turned toward him.
"When was the last time one of your wolves came to you with an idea instead of a problem?"
The question caught them completely off guard.
The Alphas exchanged uncertain glances.
One sighed.
"I... don't remember."
Another frowned deeply.
"They usually wait for instructions."
Zayn nodded.
"They're capable of more."

The oldest Alpha looked at Ciara.
"Is that what you've done?"
She tilted her head.
"What do you mean?"
"You've taught wolves to think for themselves."
Ciara shook her head gently.
"No."
"I stopped teaching them not to."
Silence settled over the valley once again.
Even the birds seemed quieter.
That single sentence struck deeper than any speech could have.

By midday, the discussion had shifted naturally.
No longer about authority.
About trust.
Each Alpha shared stories from their own pack.
Mistakes they had made.
Moments they wished they could undo.
Lessons they had learned too late.
No one judged.
No one interrupted.
For perhaps the first time in their lives, they were not speaking as rivals.
They were simply leaders trying to become better.

As the sun climbed higher, Rowan stood.
"I propose something."
The others looked up.
"No treaties."
"No promises."
"No alliance."
He paused.
"Just this."
He looked around the circle.
"Every season... we meet again."
"Not to settle disputes."
"To learn from one another."
The suggestion hung in the air.
Levion smiled.
"It sounds less like a council."
"And more like a conversation," Ciara added.
Rowan returned her smile.
"Exactly."
One by one, the other Alphas agreed.
No signatures were exchanged.
No oaths were sworn.
Only a shared understanding.

As the gathering came to an end, the leaders began preparing for the journey home.
The youngest Alpha paused beside Ciara.
"I came here expecting to defend my position."
He laughed softly.
"I'm leaving with homework."
Ciara couldn't help but laugh with him.
"What kind of homework?"
He smiled.
"I'm going to ask my wolves one question."
"What question?"
He looked toward the forest stretching beyond the valley.
"'What do you think we could do better?'"
Ciara nodded, pleased.
"And then?"
He grinned.
"I'm going to listen."

As the five Alphas departed in different directions, Levion stood beside Ciara at the edge of the valley.
"Do you think they'll change?" he asked.
Ciara watched them disappear among the trees.
"Not today."
She smiled softly.
"But today..."
She looked at the empty stone circle where enemies had once gathered.
"...they chose to begin."
The wind rustled through the towering ash trees, carrying away the last echoes of the council.
For the first time in living memory, the Valley of Ash Oaks had not ended a conflict.
It had begun a future.
