Chapter 94 THE GATHERING AT ASH OAKS
Chapter 94 THE GATHERING AT ASH OAKS
The Valley of Ash Oaks had witnessed centuries of rivalry.
Old treaties had been signed beneath its towering trees.
Challenges had been issued there.
Borders had been redrawn.
Blood had stained its earth more than once.
Today, it was silent.
The ancient ash trees swayed gently in the morning breeze, their silver-green leaves whispering overhead as Ciara, Levion, and Zayn entered the valley.
At its center stood a massive circular stone table, worn smooth by time.
Five figures were already waiting.
Each wore the colors of their pack.
Each carried the quiet confidence of someone accustomed to being obeyed.
Yet none of them reached for a weapon.
That alone was remarkable.
One by one, they acknowledged Levion with respectful nods.
Then their attention shifted to Ciara.
The woman they had heard so much about.
The one who had changed two packs without conquering either.
An older Alpha with streaks of white in his dark hair stepped forward.
"We've been expecting you."
Ciara inclined her head politely.
"I appreciate the invitation."
The Alpha studied her for a long moment.
"You don't look like someone who started a movement."
Ciara smiled faintly.
"I didn't."
A ripple of curiosity passed among the five leaders.
Another Alpha, younger and broad-shouldered, folded his arms.
"Then explain why wolves in our territories have begun asking different questions."
Ciara met his gaze calmly.
"I can't."
His brows drew together.
"You can't?"
"I didn't tell them what to ask."
Silence settled over the gathering.
The oldest Alpha let out a thoughtful breath.
"Perhaps," he murmured, "that's exactly the answer."
They took their seats around the ancient stone table.
No one sat at the head.
There wasn't one.
Ciara noticed the subtle hesitation that crossed the faces of the Alphas before they realized it.
For the first time in years, they sat as equals.
Levion noticed it too but said nothing.
The oldest Alpha broke the silence.
"My name is Rowan."
The others introduced themselves in turn.
When they finished, Rowan looked toward Ciara.
"We've each heard different stories about you."
"A healer."
"A leader."
"A wolf blessed by the ancestors."
"A rebel."
He smiled slightly.
"I suspect none of them are entirely true."
Ciara laughed softly.
"They're all incomplete."
Rowan leaned forward.
"Then tell us."
"What changed?"
Ciara rested her hands lightly on the stone table.
"I stopped asking wolves to prove their worth."
The five Alphas exchanged glances.
One frowned.
"That's all?"
"It was enough."
Another Alpha shook his head.
"Our packs are different."
"They are," Ciara agreed.
"But fear isn't."
That answer lingered.
Each Alpha looked away for a moment, lost in private thought.
Because each of them knew exactly what she meant.
Levion finally spoke.
"I ruled through strength for years."
The five leaders turned toward him.
"I believed respect and fear were the same thing."
He paused.
"I was wrong."
Coming from the feared Alpha of the Shadow Pack, the admission landed with unexpected force.
None of the Alphas laughed.
None challenged him.
Instead, one of them asked quietly,
"What changed your mind?"
Levion glanced at Ciara.
"I watched wolves become stronger after they stopped fearing me."
No one spoke for several moments.
The valley seemed to hold its breath.
Finally, Rowan asked the question they had all traveled there to ask.
"If we choose this path..."
He looked around at the other Alphas.
"...what becomes of us?"
Ciara answered gently.
"You stop carrying your pack alone."
The simplicity of the answer unsettled them.
For years they had believed leadership meant bearing every burden.
Making every decision.
Standing alone.
The possibility that it didn't...
That was difficult to imagine.
A hawk circled high above the valley.
Its cry echoed across the ancient stones.
Ciara looked up briefly before returning her attention to the leaders.
"I'm not asking you to surrender authority," she said.
"I'm asking you to share responsibility."
The youngest Alpha leaned back thoughtfully.
"And if our wolves disappoint us?"
Ciara smiled.
"They will."
A few of them blinked.
She continued,
"So will you."
That earned the first genuine laughter of the morning.
Even Rowan chuckled.
As the laughter faded, the atmosphere around the stone table felt lighter.
Less guarded.
The oldest Alpha folded his hands.
"I think," he said slowly, "this may be the first council I've attended where no one is trying to win."
Levion nodded.
"That's because we're trying to understand."
The five Alphas exchanged thoughtful glances.
Outside the circle of ancient stones, the wind stirred the ash trees once more.
For the first time in generations, the Valley of Ash Oaks was witnessing something far rarer than victory.
It was witnessing the beginning of trust.
