Chapter 89 - HEIRESS'S SECOND CHANCE BILLIONAIRE

Chapter Eighty-Nine “Fallen Backbone.”

Isabella Kingston.

The worst incidents are those that you did not foresee. It is when you finally get your life on track, thinking everything is all dandy rosy, then reality slaps you on the face hard. I was not ready for the reality I had to accept.

I was at work, in the middle of a meeting when I received the call.

One minute I was helming the meeting to finalize my show happening this coming weekend, and the next, Amy had rushed into the room earning looks from all of us. The moment felt like déjà vu to me because the last time she came in like that, and with such expression—the news of me pushing Crystal to her death resurfaced.

I had just managed to put off that fire and was finally getting my life on track when this happened as well. Only this time, the look on her face was more grave than the last, making my insides churn.

“What is it?” I asked in a low voice once she came to stand in front of me, my expression yawing blank but my brows knitted.

“It’s Mr. Montague,” She heaved out a shaky breath, letting out a huge sigh as her own brows knitted, a line of worry marring her forehead. “He had collapsed earlier and was sent to the hospital.”

“What?” The word escaped my lips before I could think twice. “Which hospital? What is his condition? Was he not supposed to fly out for his treatment in Korea yesterday? I spoke to him yesterday morning and he said he was ready to fly out.” He finally agreed and caved in to the surgery.

He said till I got married, well, I did. He had been delaying it but I finally got him to agree and everything was set for yesterday. Had things gone as planned, he is supposed to be undergoing that surgery in South Korea in this very moment, and what am I hearing now?

With Christian’s birthday party, I did not get the chance to call and check up on them given the flight was set to depart last night. What happened in the span of those hours?

“His usual hospital in England, and his condition,” She shook her head slightly, “Anderson said it is critical and advise you all to be near. He did not say anything more, but I am certain he will tell you once you reach there.”

My heart hammered behind my ribcage as I made my way out, with one person in mind along with a destination. “Prepare the jet, we are heading off to England directly,”

“Already on it, I have informed them and they are on standby, the driver is waiting downstairs as well and we are set to leave.” She informed almost immediately, and I had to stop to take a look at her.

It is times like this that I am reminded why I kept her by my side all these years, she knows what to do in times like this and I could not be any more grateful.

So, I nodded slowly and muttered a small ‘thank you’ under my breath. She offered me a small, warm smile of encouragement in return. I turned around and walked straight to the elevator with her trailing behind.

As we stepped in, I pulled my phone out to call Christian and inform him though something tells me he will already be aware. I had not gotten the chance to speak to him earlier in the morning, a bit too early might I add, for he had to leave earlier for some excuse of his. He just left a note saying he has an important meeting he needed to attend but will be back soon.

Of course I felt hurt that he left after the night we spent together but I did not allow myself to dwell on negative thoughts. Having doubts in the beginning with only ruin our relationship and I would like to believe I know Christian well enough at this point to allow any doubts to sprout and ruin what we are about to build.

I had in mind that we will spend the days together since it is weekend, but with him gone, I decided to just hold a quick meeting at the company as well despite it being weekend, planning on doubling their paychecks for bearing with me all this while.

Bringing the phone to my ear, I leaned my back against the elevator wall as I waited for him to pick up. He did not, at least until the last ring and even then, it was not his voice that welcomed me.

“Christian?” My voice sounded oddly calm to my ears, despite me being a raging storm inside. I was not sure I will remain that calm once I hear his voice though, because he has a way of making me reveal my weak side with just a few words from him.

And I was right, the reply did weaken my insides, just not in the day I expected. “Isabella,” A familiar voice came from the other end instead of my husband’s, a voice I certainly am not expecting in the slightest.

“Zara?” Her name escaped past my lips almost instinctively, the familiarity of her tone making it impossible to not detect her identity right away. “What are you doing with Christian’s phone?”

A soft sound came from her side, “Oh, I am sorry, Christian is asleep at the moment, and I figured it will be better if I answered rather than leaving your call to end like that.” Her tone was sickly sweet, anyone would mistake it for her simply being kind and harmless but I knew better.

“He is asleep?” So many thoughts crossed my mind due to that one word, thoughts I told myself to not have swamped in, planting seeds of doubt in my mind.

“Yes, asleep.” I could picture her nodding along with her words. “He is a bit too exhausted at the moment so he fell asleep. I can wake him up for you, but I believe you would agree with me he shall not be disturbed, huh? He seems to be in need of the rest. Unless you want me to wake him up?”

I folded my lips in, clicking my tongue as the fire in my chest burned more intensely. Still, I managed to keep myself calm. “No, it’s fine,” I waved it off as the elevator doors slid open, and I stepped out. “I will take to him later.” Not waiting for her response, I ended the call, dropping my hands by my side as we walked to where the car is waiting.

Something tells me, regardless of what the truth of the situation is, one thing is for certain—Zara wants to cause a rift because Christian and I, and by saying those things she wants to rile me up. Unfortunately, I have no plans of letting her see that weakness from me, even if I have my doubts as well. I refuse to give her that satisfaction.

The door was opened for me and I slid into the back seat, with Amy taking the passenger seat up front. I could feel her staring at me through the rearview mirror with a worried expression, no doubt getting an idea of what is going on from my call and coming to her own conclusion just like everyone would.

I guess what she finds to be weird is how I am not acting out or throwing a fit. I could not, not when I have a bigger issue at hand and there is just too much going through my mind, that I try to not dwell on more issues.

So, instead of giving that my energy, I decided to just text Carter, his assistant instead.

-I am flying to England, inform Christian as soon as you can.

Isabella.

After sending that text, I locked my phone and dropped it on my thigh, turning my head around and watching the streets as we drive past. Everything much pretty passed by in a blur and soon enough, I found myself boarding the jet and was flying out of the country off to head to my father.

Throughout the flight, I was a bundle of nerves and worries. All I could think of and pray fervently for is that he will be fine, that he will get through this.

He has to. He is all I have, and the only one I recognize as my parent. He has to survive this, for me at least. He will.

He cannot leave me alone; I won’t be able to handle another abandonment. That is my greatest fear…being alone
