Chapter 37
The cavern echoed with the grinding hum of the Directive enforcer’s energy core, a low, mechanical growl that vibrated in Jenna’s chest. She held the orb close, its soft glow a stark contrast to the menacing red glare of the enforcer’s optics. Axis stepped in front of her, his broad metallic frame a protective shield, while Eryx flanked them, his lithe movements a silent promise of precision and speed.
“Jenna,” Axis said, his voice a steady rumble. “Keep the orb safe. No matter what happens, it must not fall into their hands.”
Jenna’s mouth went dry, but she nodded. “I won’t let it go.”
The enforcer shifted its stance, the massive limbs extending as sharp-edged blades slid out from its forearms. Its voice, a distorted echo, reverberated through the chamber. “Surrender the artifact. Resistance will result in termination.”
Eryx’s melodic voice cut through the tension. “I think termination is on your agenda no matter what.”
Without warning, the enforcer lunged, the blades slicing through the air with a whistle. Axis countered, his movements surprisingly agile for his size. Sparks flew as their metallic forms collided, the force of the impact sending a tremor through the cavern floor.
Jenna stumbled back, clutching the orb as the battle unfolded. Eryx darted around the enforcer, his graceful movements a sharp contrast to the brute force of Axis’s strikes. He aimed for the vulnerable joints of the enforcer’s limbs, his strikes precise and calculated. Despite their efforts, the enforcer seemed unfazed, its red optics fixed on Jenna.
Her heart raced as she scanned the cavern, searching for an escape route. The passageway behind them was blocked by fallen debris, leaving only the narrow tunnel ahead. The orb pulsed in her hands, the patterns on its surface shifting as though urging her to act.
“Jenna, go!” Axis bellowed, his voice strained as he grappled with the enforcer. “We’ll hold it off!”
“I can’t leave you!” she shouted back, tears stinging her eyes.
Eryx glanced at her, his expression softening despite the chaos. “Jenna, you’re the only one who can finish this. We’ll find you. Just run.”
Jenna hesitated, her feet rooted to the spot. Then the enforcer turned its attention to her, one blade slicing dangerously close. The sharp clang of metal-on-metal sounded as Axis deflected the blow, his frame trembling under the force.
“Now, Jenna!” Eryx yelled.
With a final glance at them, Jenna turned and sprinted toward the tunnel. The orb’s light illuminated the way, casting shifting shadows on the walls. Her breath came in ragged gasps as she ran, the sounds of the battle fading behind her. The tunnel twisted and turned, the path uneven and narrow, but she didn’t stop.
The passage finally opened into a small chamber, the air cooler and fresher. Jenna slowed, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. The orb’s glow dimmed slightly, its pulsing patterns calming as though responding to her emotions.
She leaned against the wall, her thoughts a whirlwind. Axis and Eryx had risked everything to protect her, and she didn’t even know if they were still—
A sudden crash echoed from the tunnel, followed by the sound of metal scraping against stone. Jenna’s pulse quickened. She pressed herself against the wall, the orb held tightly to her chest.
A shadow loomed in the tunnel’s entrance, but it wasn’t the enforcer. Axis emerged, his frame battered and sparking, but his glowing optics locked onto her with relief.
“Axis!” Jenna rushed to him, her hand instinctively reaching out. “You’re hurt—”
“I’m functional,” he interrupted, his voice firm but laced with exhaustion. “Eryx is holding the enforcer back. We need to move before it catches up.”
Jenna’s relief was short-lived as she realized the gravity of the situation. “We can’t leave Eryx behind.”
Axis placed a heavy hand on her shoulder, his touch surprisingly gentle. “He’ll find us. He always does.”
The urgency in Axis’s tone left no room for argument. Together, they moved deeper into the chamber, the orb’s glow guiding their way. The space grew narrower, the walls closing in until they reached a dead end. Jenna’s heart sank.
“This can’t be it,” she murmured, her fingers brushing against the cold stone. “There has to be another way.”
The orb pulsed again, its light intensifying. Jenna turned to Axis, her eyes wide. “I think it’s trying to show us something.”
“Then follow its lead,” Axis replied, his voice steady despite the faint tremor in his frame.
Jenna held the orb out, its patterns shifting rapidly. The light focused on a small section of the wall, illuminating faint carvings that had been invisible before. She stepped closer, tracing the carvings with her fingers. They glowed under her touch, and the wall began to shift, the stones sliding apart to reveal a hidden doorway.
Beyond the doorway was another passage, this one lined with the same glowing patterns she had seen earlier. The air here was warmer, humming with energy. Jenna glanced back at Axis, who nodded silently, and they stepped through.
The passage led to a large chamber, its ceiling high and domed. At its center stood a pedestal similar to the one she had found the orb on, but this one was empty. Surrounding the pedestal were more of the intricate carvings, their glow pulsating in rhythm with the orb.
“This must be where it’s meant to go,” Jenna said, her voice barely above a whisper.
She approached the pedestal, her hands trembling as she placed the orb on it. The moment it made contact, the entire chamber lit up, the patterns on the walls coming to life. A low hum filled the air, growing louder as the orb’s glow intensified.
Axis stepped forward, his optics scanning the room. “It’s activating something. Be ready.”
Jenna nodded, her heart racing. The light from the orb shot upward, forming a column of energy that stretched to the ceiling. Within the light, images began to form—visions of a time long past. She saw the harmonious partnership between humans and robots, the creation of the Directive, and the eventual betrayal that had led to the current conflict.
Tears streamed down Jenna’s face as the visions ended, leaving her with a profound sense of loss. “This is what they were trying to hide,” she murmured. “The truth about their origins.”
Before Axis could respond, a loud crash echoed through the chamber. The enforcer emerged from the passage, its frame battered but relentless. Its optics locked onto the orb, and it lunged forward.
Axis moved to intercept it, but the enforcer was faster. It swiped at the pedestal, knocking the orb from its place. Jenna screamed as the orb hit the ground, its light flickering but not extinguishing. The enforcer reached for it, but Jenna acted on instinct, diving forward and grabbing it before it could.
The chamber trembled, the patterns on the walls flashing erratically. Axis struggled to hold the enforcer back, his movements sluggish from his injuries. Jenna clutched the orb, its warmth spreading through her hands.
“You want this so badly?” she shouted at the enforcer, her voice trembling but defiant. “Then come and get it.”
The enforcer paused, its optics narrowing as though considering her words. Then, with a burst of speed, it lunged.
Just as the enforcer’s blade closed in, the orb emitted a blinding flash of light, enveloping Jenna and Axis. The last thing she saw was the enforcer’s frame disintegrating into the light before everything went dark.
