Chapter 36

The fall seemed endless, a blur of darkness and cold air rushing past her. Jenna’s heart raced, her arms flailing for anything to stop her descent. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fall ended with a surprisingly soft landing. She blinked, trying to make sense of her surroundings. A faint glow illuminated the cavern she had landed in, the walls covered in intricate patterns that pulsed gently with light, as though alive.

Her breath came in shallow gasps as she sat up, her fingers brushing against the floor. It wasn’t hard rock but something softer—spongy, almost organic. Jenna shivered at the thought. The glow emanating from the walls grew brighter, revealing a vast chamber that stretched far beyond her line of sight.

“Axis!” she called, her voice echoing in the cavern. There was no response, only the faint hum of the glowing patterns that seemed to resonate with her voice.

Her mind raced with questions. What was this place? How had she survived the fall? And where was Axis? She stood slowly, brushing the dirt off her pants, and started exploring the chamber. Each step was tentative, her boots sinking slightly into the floor.

The glowing patterns on the walls began to shift as she moved, forming shapes that were almost recognizable—symbols, perhaps a language. Jenna stopped in her tracks, her pulse quickening. The patterns felt familiar, like the alien script she had been sent to decode before her crash on this planet. She reached out, her fingers hovering inches from the wall.

Before she could touch it, the glow intensified, and a beam of light shot out, enveloping her hand. She gasped, instinctively trying to pull back, but the light held her in place. A strange warmth spread through her, accompanied by a rush of images and sounds in her mind.

She saw glimpses of towering mechanical beings, much like Axis but older, more advanced. Their voices were a symphony of tones, their movements fluid and deliberate. Then, she saw humans—scientists and engineers—working alongside these beings. There was a sense of harmony, a shared purpose, until the images shifted abruptly. Conflict erupted, the harmony shattered by mistrust and fear.

The light released her hand, and Jenna stumbled back, her heart pounding. The cavern dimmed slightly, as if whatever had shown her the visions had exhausted its energy.

A faint sound drew her attention—a series of soft, mechanical clicks. Jenna turned toward the source, her eyes narrowing as she spotted a figure emerging from the shadows. It wasn’t Axis or any other robot she recognized. The figure was slender, its frame gleaming with a silvery sheen. Its face was smooth and featureless, save for two glowing orbs where eyes might have been.

“Who... or what are you?” Jenna asked, her voice trembling but steady.

The figure tilted its head, the orbs flickering briefly before a soft voice responded, “You are not supposed to be here.”

The words sent a chill down her spine. “I didn’t exactly plan on falling into this place,” she replied, taking a cautious step back. “I’m looking for my friends. Have you seen them?”

The figure remained still for a moment before gesturing toward a passageway that branched off from the chamber. “They search for you above. But time is limited. The Directive will find this place soon.”

Jenna’s heart sank. “The Directive? How do you know about them?”

The figure didn’t answer directly. Instead, it turned and began moving toward the passageway, its movements smooth and almost hypnotic. “Follow me. You must leave before it is too late.”

Jenna hesitated, her instincts torn between distrust and the urge to escape. With a deep breath, she decided to follow. The passageway was narrow, the glowing patterns on the walls providing just enough light to guide her. The figure moved silently ahead of her, its presence both reassuring and unnerving.

As they walked, the figure spoke, its voice soft but clear. “This place is ancient, built long before the Directive came into existence. It holds knowledge they fear, knowledge that could end their control.”

Jenna’s curiosity flared. “What kind of knowledge?”

The figure paused, turning to face her. “The truth about their origin—and yours.”

The words hung in the air, heavy with implication. Before Jenna could press further, the passageway opened into another chamber, smaller but equally mesmerizing. At its center stood a pedestal, atop which rested a glowing orb. The light from the orb pulsed in time with the patterns on the walls.

The figure gestured toward the orb. “This is what you seek, even if you do not yet realize it. It contains the key to freeing your world from the Directive’s grasp.”

Jenna approached the pedestal cautiously, her eyes fixed on the orb. It seemed to call to her, its glow intensifying as she drew closer. “What am I supposed to do with it?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Take it,” the figure replied. “But be warned—once you do, the Directive will stop at nothing to retrieve it.”

Jenna reached out, her hand hovering over the orb. She hesitated, her mind racing with doubts. What if this was a trap? What if taking the orb put everyone she cared about in even greater danger?

But as she stood there, the memories of Axis and Eryx flashed in her mind—their unwavering support, their willingness to risk everything for her. She couldn’t let them down now.

With a deep breath, she grasped the orb. The instant her fingers made contact, a surge of energy coursed through her, and the chamber lit up with blinding light. Jenna cried out, her body trembling as the energy seemed to merge with her own.

When the light subsided, she found herself kneeling on the ground, the orb clutched tightly in her hands. The figure stood nearby, its glowing orbs flickering. “It is done,” it said. “You must go now.”

Jenna rose unsteadily, the weight of the orb both physical and metaphorical. “How do I find my way back?”

The figure gestured toward another passageway. “This path will lead you to the surface. Your friends are close.”

Without another word, Jenna started down the passageway. The orb’s glow illuminated her path, its warmth a strange comfort. She moved quickly, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination.

As she neared the end of the passageway, she heard voices—Axis’s deep, resonant tone and Eryx’s more melodic cadence. Relief flooded her, and she quickened her pace.

“Axis! Eryx!” she called out, her voice echoing.

They turned toward her, their circuits flaring brightly. “Jenna!” Axis’s voice was filled with relief as he moved to embrace her.

Before she could reach them, however, a loud rumble shook the ground. The walls of the passageway began to crack, and a deafening roar filled the air. Jenna turned just in time to see a massive figure descending into the cavern—a Directive enforcer, its towering frame glowing with ominous red light.
