CHAPTER FIFTY

CHAPTER FIFTY
ATHENA’S POV

“Come in.” I said, after the third knock.

And I already knew who it would be. By the way the knocks were impatient.

The door opened up to reveal Haylen trailed behind by Joe, who walked into my room.

“Hey…” they said to me, at the same time.

At this point, I was beginning to think that they sync mentally. Because have you ever noticed when people hang around each other too much, they begin to use each other's lingua?

And not just lingua. Gestures too or movements. I think Haylen and Joe have begun thinking the same way.

Although Joe is still the quieter version. I was surprised yesterday when I heard him say something that would have absolutely come from Haylen, in her absence.

So yeah, she was rubbing off on him quite a lot. It's quite unfortunate that he wasn’t rubbing off on her anyway.

We love her like that, though.

“How are you doing?” They asked me. At the same time, once again.

My sister took a seat at the end of my bed while her mate stood beside her.

“Okay, I guess.”

“I saw a car drop you at the driveway. Was that Adam?” Joe asked.

Deep down, every time I saw him, I couldn’t help but remember he was sacrificing his school stay for me.

“Yeah, it was. I went to see him after school.”

“Oh… That's good. You guys are good now?”

“Yeah, we are.”

“Do you care to share what happened before?” it was my sister’s turn to question me.

“Haylin, you came here for the tea, didn't you?” she was easy to read sometimes.

“Exactly. You have been so down these past few days. I felt really guilty trying to ask you what's going on because I felt you did not want to talk.”

“I actually didn’t. You thought right.” Even though I definitely would have given her an answer if she asked, but I would feel compelled to and not because I really wish to.

Joe looks to Haylin and grabs her by the shoulder. “You could be more subtle about that fact.”

“Yeah, I know…” she started and brushed his hand off her shoulder like the act would make her feel less guilty. “But I've waited so many days. Like, come on… She's my sister.”

I couldn't help but chuckle as I sat on my bed. My laughter brought her attention back to me. “Was it about Adam earlier? Did he do something?”

I contemplated telling her what I had heard, and realized there was no point hiding it anyway.

Not only that… I still have to tell her and the rest of the family, but the easiest way to get information across to the rest of the family was to definitely tell Haylen.

She was going to broadcast it effortlessly.

Our little jingle bell.

Or big jingle bell

Because she's older than me.

“Uhm, yeah. I kind of heard something about him.”

“From who?”

I had an inkling that if I mentioned her name, it was going to spark a conversation of what happened when I got back from her house. But not mentioning it, would lead to Haylen probing deeper, leading to me just saying it in the end and raising questions about why I hid her name.

“From Lydia.”

“Oh, Lydia?”

“Yeah.”

“What did you hear?”

Even with an inactive wolf like mine, I could see her senses on high alert. Meaning, Lydia was a question she archived for later.

“Let's just say, because of what she said, I assumed Adam had ill intentions towards me. She said he had quite a history.”

“I’d like to know in particular what was said?” Joe chimed. His attention too was locked in on me.

“That he had a mate he rejected.”

I had no idea that statement was funny, till my sister burst out in laughter. “That’s a new one.” She started. “The story with Adam is usually that he’s popular with the ladies.”

“I heard that too.”

“And why exactly is Lydia telling you all these?” as usual, Joe was the voice of reason.

“I wanted to ask her if she knew him. Just to know what other information that would be necessary.” And maybe tell her about him. “Then I found out he has quite a history.”

“You literally have direct contact with him. I believe anything you wish to know should be directed specifically to him. Adam seems too responsible to lie about petty things like that.” Joe again.

“Plus… Everyone has history. I mean, I used to be a thug.”

“Haylen, could you not?” her mate scolds her, and she takes the cue to keep mute. Once again, I chuckled at her behavior.

“Yeah, but not everyone has a history with strings of women.”

Haylen’s facial expression changes into something similar. Something that I knew resembled choosing not to speak. “Well, I know Adam wasn’t celibate, but I didn't attribute it to, you know, him being notorious with it. I mean, you didn't expect it to be celibate throughout, did you?”

“Not that I did, but hearing he rejected his mate to avoid celibacy is a whole new level.”

“You literally got that information from Adal high, the hub of gossip. You would hear much more things than that. Back in school, I literally heard I had a kid. I was surprised when I heard I had a kid. I didn't know I had a kid.”

I remember that tale. I had people asking me how my niece was doing and I was confused through the roof.

“But did you talk it out with Adam?” you can guess who asked this, since Haylin was more interested in gossip.

“Oh! sorry, yeah, did you ask him?” you would think my sister has learned a little lesson here. You would be misled.

“Yeah, I decided to have the conversation with him instead of avoiding him. And he clarified the whole thing.”

“That’s great. So, you two are good now?” this was Joe.

“Yeah. Speaking of Lydia.” I knew she was going to raise this up after I mentioned her name.

“Yeah, what about her? Are you two okay? The last time...” I cut her midway.

“Yeah, we're fine.” Lying was becoming more and more fine-tuned when it came to me.

“Okay, just wanted to know, was it also about the Adam stuff?”

“Yeah, it was, but we're good now.”

“Good, that's good, that's great. I'm happy for you two.” she said.

And I sighed in my mind.

Oh, I wish I could be happy for the both of us as well.
