Chapter 395
Chapter 395
I slowly opened the door. Jenna barely glanced at me before leading Puff past.
"The dog's been walked. My time's almost up. I'd appreciate a five-star rating, please."
Jenna's request was polite but distant. This gig work gave her more dignity than other service jobs, at least.
Kennedy laughed awkwardly. "Of course, of course. Do you know when you'll be available tomorrow?"
"I'll accept orders when I'm free."
Jenna clearly wasn't making any promises. Maybe my presence had disrupted the comfortable employer-employee dynamic they'd been building.
"Okay then. You did great work. Thank you so much."
"You're welcome."
Jenna picked up her bag and deliberately peered inside—as if checking whether Kennedy had seen the card.
"I'll be going now."
After Jenna's polite goodbye, Kennedy followed to see her out.
The moment the door opened, I realized this was my chance. If I pushed just a little harder, maybe Jenna would agree.
I grabbed my bag and hurried after them.
"You're leaving too, Mr. Morgan?"
Jenna's back stiffened. Hearing Kennedy call me 'Mr. Morgan' must have caught her off guard.
"Yeah, something came up. I need to go."
"Let me walk you out."
"No need. You're not in any condition for that. Rest up, and let me know if you need anything."
I closed the door for her, then slipped into the elevator just as the doors were closing. Jenna stuck her foot out, and they reopened.
"Thanks."
I stepped quickly inside.
Jenna clutched her canvas bag with both hands, eyes fixed straight ahead.
I didn't know how to start. She seemed detached, like someone who preferred to avoid conversation.
It wasn't hard to understand why. Her family destroyed, her boyfriend gone abroad, working at the hospital while juggling side gigs just to keep everyone afloat—under that kind of pressure, anyone would shut themselves off.
"Have you thought it over?"
I'd mentally prepared myself to accept any answer.
Her lips twitched. She seemed about to speak, then stopped.
"I know Arabella hurt your family badly. Don't you want to see her get what she deserves?"
"I do."
Jenna's answer was razor-sharp, her eyes locked on mine.
Her intensity startled me. I hadn't expected such a visceral reaction.
"Then will you work with me? We can make her lose everything together."
"Everything?"
The elevator doors opened.
My driver saw me emerge and started walking over.
I held up a hand to stop him, then followed Jenna out of the building.
We stopped in the complex's garden. It was quiet here. Private.
"Blair Ember. CEO of Heartstrings Jewelry. Also my employer's boss."
I was stunned. She knew exactly who I was.
"That woman destroyed your family. Your mother fell into depression because of her and eventually died. My mentor treated your mother once."
What a coincidence. What a shock.
I hadn't investigated her, yet she'd dug up my entire background.
"That woman deserves to die. But I'm settling my own score."
Jenna looked up at the sky. "Someday, I'll make her pay."
"But leaking news about her daughter's surgery won't hurt her much. She's ruthless. She doesn't care about her own daughter."
"Any impact is enough."
I shook my head. "That's not a real blow. While her daughter was being torn apart online, she was flirting with other men."
Jenna actually laughed—probably thinking of her brother and her boyfriend, both of whom had been bewitched by Arabella.
"Men. They're all the same."
The despair in her eyes was bottomless.
"Work with me. I promise it'll be effective."
She gave another bitter smile. "Revenge is something I have to finish myself. Give it up."
"I have a solid plan right now. If you just cooperate with me, we can make her pay dearly."
Jenna shook her head. "She's been to prison before. Unless she's dead, she'll keep wreaking havoc."
"I've already—"
I stopped myself. I couldn't expose Henry. Until she agreed to work with me, Henry and I had to keep our operation completely secret.
She checked her watch. "Don't waste your breath. I handle my own business."
"If you change your mind, you can contact me anytime."
"I won't."
Jenna rejected me again. Watching her walk away with such finality left me feeling deflated.
I'd thought she'd want to take down Arabella together. I hadn't expected her to be this resolute—determined to get revenge herself.
Without relying on anyone else...
My two-pronged plan was falling apart. I'd intended to arrange for Jenna and Henry to get together if she agreed—that would've provoked Arabella.
Now I'd have to rethink my approach.
The Henry-pretending-to-know-Jenna angle would have to be shelved for now.
The driver approached. "Mrs. Morgan, should we head home? It's almost noon."
He was reminding me that Levi would be home for lunch.
"Yes. But let me make a call first. Wait in the car."
"I'll bring it around."
Jenna had disappeared completely. I dialed Henry's number.
"Hello, Mrs. Morgan. What are your instructions?"
"If Arabella asks about Jenna, don't mention her for now."
"Got it."
"Did she contact you today?"
"She did. She asked me to dinner tonight."
Already setting up dinner plans this early—Arabella was becoming dependent on him.
"I rented you a place. Invite her to your house instead."
"This soon?"
"She's eager to get involved in your life. She wants to verify whether you're reliable. Once she believes you are, she'll start investing in you."
Henry was Arabella's prey right now. She needed to assess his worth. I'd rented him a well-located villa. Arabella would be thrilled, I was sure of it.
"Okay. I'll follow your lead."
"Your brother will bring you the keys. I'll send you the address shortly. Remember—protect yourself, and keep her wanting more."
"Will do."
My heart was unsettled. Sometimes I felt like everything was under control. Other times, I worried Arabella might drop Henry at any moment.
But after Jenna's reaction today, I had a feeling she'd find her own way to get revenge on Arabella—and it would hit hard.
'You reap what you sow,' I suppose. I wasn't the only one who hated her.
